To loop prerecorded videos on YouTube Live from Vultr, transfer the files to a Vultr server over SFTP, add them in OBS as a looping Media Source (or a VLC Video Source playlist for multiple files), then connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and key. You can also stage files in Vultr Object Storage with Rclone, but the cited Vultr instructions do not show OBS reading a bucket directly.
Choose where the library will live
There are two documented transfer paths, and they solve different problems: put playback files on the Vultr server that runs OBS, or transfer a library into Vultr Object Storage. Vultr’s Broadcaster guide documents the first path from SFTP transfer through OBS playback. Its Rclone guide documents the second path, but not a direct connection from an Object Storage bucket to an OBS media source.

| Route | Use it when | What remains to do |
|---|---|---|
| SFTP to the Vultr server | OBS will play files available in a server directory. | Choose a suitable directory accessible to the OBS process, then add the files in OBS. |
| Rclone to Vultr Object Storage | You want to stage or transfer files in an object-storage bucket. | Arrange a separate way for playback to access the objects, or copy the files to the server-side playback directory. The cited guide does not document direct bucket playback in OBS. |
Route A: transfer files to the server with SFTP
Prepare an accessible destination directory
Vultr’s Broadcaster guide demonstrates connecting to the server over SFTP, changing to a directory accessible to users (it uses /tmp as an example), creating a directory for OBS files, and uploading local files there. Treat /tmp as an example rather than a durable-storage recommendation: choose a location suitable for your deployment and make sure the account running OBS can read it. The guide does not establish a universally correct persistent path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUpload the library
- Open a terminal on the computer holding the files and connect to the Vultr server with SFTP using the server and credentials for your deployment.
- Change to the chosen destination directory and create a folder for the media if needed.
- Use SFTP’s
putcommand to transfer files from the local directory into the remote working directory. Check that the expected files are present on the server before configuring OBS.
The transfer time and maximum practical library size depend on your files, connection, server, and storage configuration; the cited guide does not provide a universal size or completion-time figure.

Route B: stage files in Vultr Object Storage with Rclone
Configure the S3 connection
Vultr’s Rclone guide configures the S3 backend with provider Vultr, a region-specific endpoint, the account’s access key and secret key, and a private ACL. Its endpoint example is https://ewr1.vultrobjects.com; use the endpoint for your selected region rather than assuming that example applies everywhere. Keep the ACL private unless public URL access is deliberately required, and protect the access credentials.
Choose copy or sync deliberately
rclone copytransfers files without mirroring deletions from the source.rclone syncmakes the destination match the source and can remove destination objects that are absent from the source. Inspect the destination and source before running it; do not treat sync as a harmless one-way upload.
Vultr’s example demonstrates the removal behavior of sync. The guide also shows copying between buckets and regions, but it does not document an OBS source that plays directly from an Object Storage bucket. Plan a separate access or copy step for server-side playback.

Respond to Object Storage rate-limit errors
If Object Storage returns HTTP 429, 503, or 504 responses, Vultr’s guide suggests limiting transactions with --tpslimit 100 and using --transfers 1 to avoid parallel file transfers. These are troubleshooting settings, not a throughput or completion-time guarantee.

Set up the YouTube loop in OBS
Loop one file or rotate a playlist
- In OBS, add a Media Source and browse to the file in the server directory.
- For one file, enable the source’s Loop option and save the source settings.
- For multiple files, use a VLC Video Source to configure the files that should play and loop repeatedly, as Vultr’s Broadcaster guide directs.
- Check the OBS preview for picture and confirm the source audio appears in the Audio Mixer before starting the broadcast.
Do not assume a successful upload means the media is ready to broadcast: verify that the OBS process can access each file and that both picture and sound play as expected.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or manage the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”; keep the key private and reset it in Live Control Room if it is compromised.
- Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it for encrypted ingest.
- Start Streaming in OBS, then verify that the stream is active in YouTube Live Control Room.
Choose live settings and run a preflight test
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings as the reference for the selected resolution and frame rate, and choose a bitrate your measured upload capacity can sustain. YouTube’s guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant-bitrate encoding; and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Do not treat one bitrate or resolution as universal across connections and targets.
- Test with representative motion and audio before the intended broadcast; YouTube explicitly advises testing before going live.
- Check stream health and read messages in Live Control Room during the event.
- Consider the latency trade-off: lower latency can increase playback buffering. If the stream does not depend on audience interaction, the lowest latency option may not be necessary.
- Keep ordinary video-upload encoding guidance separate from live-encoder settings; the two workflows have different settings.
Know which upload limits apply
YouTube Help’s individual-video upload limit is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Accounts are limited by default to uploads of 15 minutes or less until verified, and YouTube recommends an up-to-date browser for ordinary uploads larger than 20 GB. These are limits and recommendations for uploading individual videos to YouTube, not stated limits for SFTP transfers to Vultr, Vultr Object Storage objects, or a Vultr account’s total storage.

For the Vultr playback workflow, the library is transferred to the server or staged in Object Storage; the files do not first have to be uploaded to YouTube as ordinary videos. YouTube’s individual-video cap therefore does not establish the size of a Vultr library.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A file is missing from OBS’s browser | The upload destination differs from the folder selected in OBS, or the OBS process cannot access the directory. | Confirm the remote path and file presence, then check directory access for the account running OBS. |
| A single video stops instead of repeating | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source. | Open the source settings and turn on Loop. |
| A playlist does not rotate as intended | The files were not configured as a VLC Video Source playlist. | Review the VLC Video Source file list and test playback in Preview. |
| There is video but no audio, or no sound in the stream | The source may not be outputting audio or may not be routed as expected. | Play the source and verify its audio in OBS’s Audio Mixer before going live. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS stream | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, or the key may have been changed. | Recheck the current values in Live Control Room and OBS; reset a compromised key. |
| Object Storage operations return HTTP 429, 503, or 504 | The requests may be hitting Object Storage rate limits. | Try Vultr’s suggested --tpslimit 100 and --transfers 1 settings. |
| The stream buffers or YouTube reports poor health | Encoder settings may exceed available upload capacity, or latency settings may not suit the stream. | Check stream health, test representative audio and motion, and adjust resolution or bitrate against measured capacity and YouTube’s current guidance. |
