To upgrade a Steam Deck’s internal storage, install a single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe SSD, using the repair procedure for your specific LCD or OLED model. Then boot Valve’s SteamOS recovery USB to repair or reinstall the operating system. The physical swap does not make the new drive ready to use by itself.
What SSD fits a Steam Deck?
iFixit identifies the SSD in both LCD and OLED Steam Decks as a single-sided M.2 2230 drive. Confirm both the 2230 size and single-sided construction for the exact drive you plan to buy; an M.2 drive that merely looks similar may not fit. iFixit’s upgrade listing names the Crucial P310 M.2 2230 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD as an option, but that listing does not establish that every capacity, revision, or seller’s SKU is suitable. Check the iFixit Steam Deck repair and parts listings and verify the specific product details before purchasing.

What to prepare before opening the Deck
- A single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe SSD.
- A precision screwdriver and plastic opening picks appropriate to your model. Valve notes that LCD and OLED rear-cover screws differ, so confirm tool requirements in the matching guide.
- A microSD card backup if needed, and a way to create SteamOS recovery media. The recovery USB must be at least 8 GB, and writing the image formats the USB drive.
- Time to complete the hardware work and the operating-system recovery afterward. The replacement procedure itself covers physical removal and installation, not making the new SSD usable.
Before disassembly, shut down the Deck, unplug cables, and remove any microSD card. iFixit warns the card can be damaged when removing the rear cover if it is left inserted. Follow electrostatic-discharge precautions. iFixit recommends discharging the battery below 25% and notes Valve’s recommendation to put the battery in storage mode through the BIOS as an additional precaution.

Opening or modifying the device carries warranty risk. Valve states: “We don’t recommend opening or otherwise modifying your device – any damage that results won’t be covered under your product warranty.” See Valve’s Steam Deck support guidance before proceeding.
How to replace the SSD
Use the guide for your exact model rather than combining instructions: iFixit has separate procedures for Steam Deck LCD SSD replacement and Steam Deck OLED SSD replacement. The guides cover the sequence for removing the back cover, shielding, connectors, and SSD, then reinstalling them. Some LCD units have refreshed internals, so photos may not match every unit exactly; pause and identify the parts in your Deck rather than forcing a step that does not match.
Rank #2
- [Available Everywhere]: The FX953 M.2 2230 SSD can be used on almost any device with an M.2 interface because it is small enough. It is compatible with handheld computers such as STEAM DECK and ASUS ROG Ally, and you can also use it to expand ultra-thin laptops such as Microsoft Surface Pro.
- [More Powerful]: The FX953 M2 2230 SSD 1TB uses the PCIe Gen4 protocol, and its maximum sequential read and write speeds can reach 5000MB/s and 3100MB/s, which is more than twice the speed of PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD, so you can enjoy the game more easily.
- [Better Heat Dissipation]: The FX953 1TB 2230 NVMe SSD is covered with an all-in-one graphite heat dissipation sticker, which can be used as an ultra-thin heat sink. During use, it can effectively reduce the heat of the SSD and improve system performance and stability.
- [Better Chips]: FX953 2230 SSD uses 3D NAND Flash chips and excellent main controllers, which have been fully tested and verified by us to ensure longer service life and higher stability.
- [Better Service]: We provide a limited warranty of up to 5 years or 320TBW for FX953 1TB M2 2230 SSD, and you can enjoy very comprehensive technical support and services.
- Shut down the Deck, disconnect it from power, remove the microSD card, and follow the guide’s battery and ESD precautions.
- Remove the rear cover with the model-appropriate tools, keeping track of screw locations and lengths as shown in the matching guide.
- Follow that guide to access the SSD and disconnect or move any shielding as directed. Handle connectors and the drive carefully; do not pull or pry against parts not identified in the procedure.
- Remove the original drive, transfer any required shielding as the guide specifies, and install the verified single-sided M.2 2230 replacement.
- Reassemble the Deck in the reverse order given in the model-specific guide, then proceed to SteamOS recovery.
How to reinstall or repair SteamOS after replacing the SSD
Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair page provides the recovery image and current instructions. Prepare a USB drive with at least 8 GB; writing the recovery image formats it, so use a drive whose contents can be erased. Because Valve may update the download or instructions, follow the live page when creating the recovery media.
- Download Valve’s Steam Deck recovery image and write it to the USB drive using the instructions on Valve’s page. The process erases the USB drive.
- Connect the recovery USB to the Deck using the connection method specified by Valve for the media you prepared.
- Hold Volume Up and press Power to enter the boot manager, then select the USB device to start the recovery environment.
- Choose the recovery action that matches your situation. Re-image Device fully wipes user information, installed games, applications, and operating systems. Repair SteamOS reinstalls SteamOS while attempting to preserve games and personal content.
When using a new, blank replacement SSD, re-imaging is the straightforward way to install a fresh system, but it is destructive: it wipes the drive’s user information and installed software. Do not select it if you need data on the drive. The repair option is intended to preserve games and personal content where possible, but Valve describes this as an attempt, not a guarantee.
