Spend upgrade materials in RAID: Shadow Legends only after checking the Champion’s rank, level cap, intended role, and the exact materials the game has selected. Rank-ups consume same-rank Champions or Chickens and reset the promoted Champion to Level 1; Skill Tome upgrades are random; Ascension and Masteries have separate requirements. Those checks help avoid spending scarce resources on the wrong target or sacrificing a Champion you meant to keep.
Plan around rank, level caps, and promotion costs
Rank determines a Champion’s maximum level. Plarium’s Tavern guide lists these caps: The Tavern – RAID: Shadow Legends.

The material count equals the target Champion’s current rank. Promotion also resets that Champion to Level 1, so it will need more XP before reaching its new level cap. Include that leveling step in your plan rather than treating rank-up as a complete upgrade.

Before sacrificing a Champion, consider whether you may need it for your roster, a fusion, or a Faction Guardian role. Those choices depend on your account; the official guide does not define a universally safe Champion to sacrifice. Chickens can serve as promotion materials too, so check the available options before consuming Champions you might later want.

Level Champions without letting auto-selection decide for you
The Tavern offers several ways to gain levels: XP from battles, XP Brews, XP Barrels, and sacrificing eligible Champions. Battle XP can progress battles at the same time, while Tavern items can provide XP without that battle activity. The official guide does not provide a universal cost-per-XP comparison, so there is no source-backed answer that one method is always the most resource-efficient.
Check materials in the Tavern
- Open the Tavern and choose the Champion you want to level or upgrade.
- Choose the relevant leveling or upgrade option, then inspect the materials selected by the interface.
- Review any Champion sacrifices carefully. Instant Upgrade includes filters for Rare Champions and Champions in vaults; protected or tagged Champions may be excluded, but do not assume that every Champion you want to keep is automatically safe.
- Remove anything you do not want to spend, confirm the selected materials, and only then complete the upgrade.
If you want passive XP, the Sparring Pit can level Champions without battles, but it does not promote their rank and cannot raise them beyond the level cap for their current rank. See Plarium’s Guide: Guardian Ring.

Use Instant Rank Up with a final materials check
Instant Rank Up can batch promotions, but its filters affect which Champions are spent first. Plarium’s Guide: Instant Rank Up identifies exclusions that include locked, Faction Guardian, vaulted, empowered, Arena Defense, and maximum-level Champions. Exclusions and selection rules are safeguards, not a substitute for reviewing the proposed materials.

- Open the Instant Rank Up interface and choose the target Champion or Champions.
- Set rarity and Affinity filters to control which eligible materials are considered first.
- Inspect the proposed materials for every promotion. If a Champion should not be promoted, uncheck it before executing the batch.
- Confirm only after checking both the targets and the materials being consumed.
Spend Skill Tomes only when you accept a random upgrade
Skill Tomes can improve eligible skills, including damage, cooldowns, or buff and debuff chances. However, you do not choose which eligible skill gets each upgrade: the game assigns upgrades randomly. That makes a Tome less predictable than an upgrade with a selected target, so reserve Tomes for Champions you have decided are worth investing in. Plarium’s Tavern guide also says duplicate copies of the same Champion can be used to upgrade skills.

Ascend with the right Potions for the Champion
Ascension requires Arcane Potions and Potions matching the Champion’s Affinity. Requirements depend on the Champion and the next Ascension level; check the in-game Ascension screen before farming or spending materials. Potions can be farmed in the appropriate Potion Dungeon, and lower-tier Potions can be combined in the Potion Mixer. The Tavern guide also lists the Shop as a source, but it does not recommend a purchase.
Farm Mastery Scrolls with rank gates in mind
Mastery Scrolls come from Minotaur’s Labyrinth. Mastery tiers are gated by rank, so a Champion cannot unlock tiers above its current rank. Check the Masteries interface for the Champion’s available tiers and scroll requirements before committing resources. Plarium’s Masteries guide also describes Gems as an option for instant upgrades within the Mastery interface; whether to use them depends on the value you place on that alternative to earning scrolls.
