There is no single BIOS version that works as a universal minimum for every Ryzen 5 9600X motherboard. Find your motherboard’s exact model and revision, check its official CPU support list for the 9600X, then follow that board’s own BIOS instructions. AMD directs users to their motherboard manufacturer for product-specific BIOS updates (AMD security bulletin).
Before you begin: identify the exact motherboard
The Ryzen 5 9600X is a Ryzen 9000 desktop processor for the AM5 socket. AMD lists it as a 6-core, 12-thread CPU with a 65 W TDP and up to 5.4 GHz max boost in its March 2025 Ryzen 9000 quick reference guide. Those processor specifications do not tell you which BIOS your motherboard needs.

- Read the full motherboard model name and hardware revision printed on the board or its box. Similar names or boards based on the same chipset can require different firmware.
- Go to the motherboard maker’s official support page for that precise model and revision.
- Open its CPU support list and find “Ryzen 5 9600X.” Record the minimum BIOS version shown, if one is listed.
Do not choose a BIOS file by chipset name alone, and do not download firmware from a third-party site. AMD’s product guidance is to contact the OEM for a BIOS update specific to the product; the manufacturer’s support page is the authority for your board.
Check the release notes and prerequisites
Before downloading or updating, read the notes for the version that supports the 9600X and the board maker’s update instructions. Look for any required intermediate BIOS versions, prerequisite updates, or warnings. Requirements differ by motherboard, so do not assume that another AM5 board’s instructions apply—even if it uses the same chipset.

Choose the update method your board supports
If the system can boot with its current processor
Use the motherboard’s built-in UEFI firmware update utility if the manufacturer recommends it for your model. Follow the exact manual or support-page instructions for preparing the BIOS file and starting the update. Do not substitute steps from a different manufacturer or board.
If you need to update without a compatible processor
Some motherboards document a CPU-less USB BIOS Flashback feature; not every AM5 board has it. Check the exact board manual to confirm support and follow its requirements for the USB port, file name, drive formatting, power state, and button sequence. A USB flash drive is needed only if the selected procedure calls for one. AMD has described Flashback as an option when a processor is incompatible with the current BIOS, but its Ryzen 5000-era guidance is not a 9600X-specific procedure; your current motherboard manual takes precedence (AMD Ryzen 5000 preparation post).

Update, verify, then install the 9600X
- Keep the system powered as the motherboard instructions require. Do not reset the system or interrupt power while the board indicates that it is writing firmware.
- Wait for the manufacturer’s stated completion signal or on-screen confirmation. If an indicator behaves unexpectedly, consult the board manual rather than guessing or repeatedly restarting.
- Follow the manufacturer’s first-boot guidance after the update, including any recommendation to load BIOS defaults.
- Power down, then install the Ryzen 5 9600X according to the motherboard and processor manuals.
If the system will not start with the 9600X
First confirm the board’s exact model and revision, then recheck its CPU support list and the BIOS version actually installed. If the board cannot boot with the 9600X and has documented CPU-less Flashback, use that feature according to its manual. If it does not, you may need a processor supported by the current BIOS to boot and run the board’s update utility; contact the manufacturer or system builder for model-specific options. A chipset name by itself cannot establish whether the board supports Flashback or which BIOS it requires.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat cannot be generalized
The available AMD guidance does not establish a universal BIOS version, update duration, success rate, or a method that works on every AM5 motherboard. AMD’s Ryzen 9000 launch announcement discusses the AM5 ecosystem and X870E/X870 integration, but does not specify the required BIOS revision for an individual board (AMD Ryzen 9000 launch release). For the version and button-by-button steps, the exact motherboard’s support page and manual are decisive.
