Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo update a motherboard for a 14th-Gen Intel desktop CPU, first identify the exact motherboard model and hardware revision, then install a compatible BIOS from that board’s official support page using the manufacturer’s documented method. After the update, enable the BIOS’s Intel Default Settings profile or the vendor-documented equivalent. There is no one BIOS version or menu path that applies to every motherboard.
Which BIOS version do you need for your 14th-Gen CPU?
Use the BIOS listed for your exact motherboard model and, where applicable, its hardware revision. A firmware file for a similarly named board or a different revision may not be suitable. Intel advises users to check the motherboard maker’s compatibility information; its 600- and 700-series chipset compatibility guidance notes that a BIOS update may be needed when moving among supported 12th-, 13th- and 14th-Gen desktop processors.

- Identify the board. Find the manufacturer, full model name and revision printed on the board, its box, or in the system information provided by the manufacturer. If a vendor publishes separate support pages by revision, match yours exactly.
- Open that model’s official support page. Check CPU compatibility and the BIOS release notes. Look for the CPU support, Intel Default Settings and microcode or stability updates relevant to your processor.
- Choose a suitable release from that page. Intel’s 0x12B microcode mitigation is delivered through a BIOS update. Later microcode, such as 0x12F, appears in releases for some specific boards, but neither version is available or appropriate universally. Board makers publish firmware independently, so there is no single “latest BIOS” number for all 14th-Gen systems. Follow the release notes for your exact board.
Prepare before flashing the BIOS
Read the motherboard manual’s BIOS-update and recovery sections before beginning. Intel’s general BIOS update guidance says most updates use a properly prepared USB drive and firmware files matched to the board, but procedures vary by manufacturer. Some boards update from a utility inside BIOS setup; others support a dedicated flashback process that may not require a working CPU. The manual determines which applies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Record settings you may need to restore after the update, such as boot order and memory profile.
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions for USB requirements, file handling, the correct port and any required filename. Do not assume another board’s steps apply.
- Confirm the board’s documented recovery procedure in case the update does not complete as expected.
- Use reliable power. Do not turn off, unplug or restart the PC while the firmware is being written. Intel notes that an update can take several minutes; the completion signal varies by manufacturer.
A USB drive may be needed, but its capacity, format and whether one is required at all depend on the board’s instructions. Check those instructions before buying or preparing one.

How to update the motherboard BIOS
Follow the exact procedure in the board manual and on its official support page. The broad sequence below is not a substitute for the vendor’s model-specific steps.
- Download the selected BIOS from the exact board support page and read its release notes and update instructions.
- Prepare the update media or utility as directed by the manual. Use only the specified file, USB format, port and filename, if applicable.
- Start the board’s documented update method. This may be a firmware-menu tool or a dedicated flashback feature if the board supports it. Do not use a flashback button, key, or procedure from a different model.
- Wait for the board’s completion indication. Do not interrupt the process, even if it takes several minutes. Completion behavior depends on the manufacturer.
- Restart and enter BIOS setup using the board’s documented key or method. Confirm the new BIOS version is displayed, then restore only the settings you need after applying Intel Default Settings.
Where do you enable Intel Default Settings?
After updating, enter BIOS setup and look for a profile named Intel Default Settings or the exact equivalent specified by your motherboard vendor. Its location and default behavior vary with the manufacturer and BIOS version, so a universal menu path would be misleading. Consult the board’s manual or BIOS release notes if the setting is not obvious.

- Universal Connectivity: This USB 2.0 adapter cable provides flexible connection between motherboard 9-pin headers and standard USB Type A ports, serving as essential computer peripheral equipment and industrial computer accessory.
- Precise Pin Configuration: Engineered with accurate pin definition starting from the red wire: red for V+ power, white for D- data, green for D+ data, and black for GND ground with yellow shielded GND. The clear color-coding prevents installation errors and simplifies connection processes for both beginners and experienced technicians.
- Great Signal Quality: Constructed with all-copper core conductors and comprehensive aluminum foil shielding, this USB to 9-pin data cable minimizes signal attenuation and electromagnetic interference. The enhanced shielding technology preserves data integrity during transmission, making it ideal for sensitive digital products and precision industrial equipment.
- Durable Construction: Featuring quality PVC exterior that remains soft yet durable through repeated use, this USB 2.0 adapter cable combines flexibility with long-term reliability. The lightweight design reduces strain on motherboard headers while the reinforced connectors withstand frequent plugging and unplugging cycles.
- Broad Compatibility Range: Compatible with numerous devices including computer peripherals, digital products, industrial computers, card readers, and various USB 2.0 compatible equipment. This USB mainboard connector supports standard USB 2.0 data transfer speeds while providing the physical adaptability needed for custom installations and system upgrades.
- Select the Intel Default Settings profile or documented equivalent.
- Save the change and reboot using the BIOS’s save-and-exit option.
- Re-enter BIOS setup or otherwise verify that the profile remains active.
- Leave performance tuning and overclocking out of the initial stability setup.
Intel recommends Intel Default Settings for 13th- and 14th-Gen desktop processors. Applying the profile is part of its mitigation guidance, alongside relevant BIOS microcode updates; it is not evidence that every instability has been resolved.

Why Intel recommends these settings
Intel’s Vmin Shift instability root-cause update describes several operating scenarios involving elevated voltage requests or motherboard power-delivery settings beyond Intel guidance. Intel says it localized the issue to a clock-tree circuit within the IA core that is vulnerable to reliability aging under elevated voltage and temperature.

Intel describes mitigations that include Intel Default Settings and microcode updates. In that update, microcode 0x12B encompasses 0x125 and 0x129 and addresses elevated voltage requests during idle or light activity. Board support pages can later list other microcode, including 0x12F on particular models. These labels are version identifiers, not a guarantee that a given BIOS is available for every motherboard; use the exact board’s release notes.

A BIOS update and default profile are mitigations, not a way to promise recovery from an already unstable or physically degraded CPU.
