Most modern Marantz AV receivers update through their own network connection. On a compatible CINEMA, SR, NR or other network-equipped AVR, use Setup → General → Firmware → Check for Update, then follow the on-screen prompts. Keep power and network connected while installation is active. Menus, update eligibility and recovery options vary by model, region and firmware generation.
Before you start
Identify the exact model and regional version from the front panel, rear label, paperwork or the receiver’s setup screen. Marantz’s manual directory covers current CINEMA models, SR receivers, NR slim receivers and older products: Marantz online manuals.

- Connect the receiver to the internet. Ethernet is preferable when Wi-Fi is weak, congested or unreliable, although many models support Wi-Fi.
- Stop playback and avoid changing inputs during installation.
- Keep the receiver connected to power. Do not press the power button, unplug it or disconnect its network while a download or installation is in progress.
- Photograph or write down important settings if your model manual warns that recovery or service could affect them. Audyssey or Dirac settings, input assignments, network details, zones and custom sound modes may need checking afterward.
- Pause unnecessary network-heavy activity if your connection is busy.
Do not assume every update resets settings, or that no update can ever affect them. The exact model manual takes priority.

- Turn on the receiver.
- Press Setup on the remote.
- Open General.
- Open Firmware.
- Select Check for Update.
- Let the receiver contact Marantz’s update server. If an update is offered, confirm it and read any warning about the process or automatic restart.
- Leave the receiver powered and undisturbed while it downloads, installs and restarts. Audio or video may temporarily stop; that alone does not mean the update failed.
- After normal operation returns, repeat Setup → General → Firmware → Check for Update to verify the result.
Marantz documents this path and the current-status message “No update required. Latest version installed” for its AVR procedure: AVR—check for the latest firmware version. Wording can differ by model, language and region.

What a firmware update can change
Release notes may describe bug fixes, stability improvements, HDMI or video-handling corrections, streaming-service compatibility, network or web-interface changes, or support for newer related services. Some releases contain only fixes, and availability can be staged rather than simultaneous for every receiver. A listed release is not a promise that your unit will receive a visible new feature.
Automatic updates
Newer HEOS-equipped AVRs may show Setup → General → Firmware → Auto-Update. Marantz says turning this option off disables automatic download and installation; it does not prevent a manual check. With auto-update enabled, maintenance is easier and fixes may arrive sooner, but installation timing is less predictable. With it disabled, you can review release information and choose a convenient time. Menu availability varies by model. Confirm that the update worked
- Run the firmware check again and confirm that the receiver reports the latest version is installed.
- Test the inputs and outputs you rely on most, including HDMI video and audio, speakers, subwoofer and zones.
- Test network playback and HEOS if those functions matter to you.
- Check personal settings and room-correction configurations if anything behaves differently.
If Marantz’s release notes identify a particular fix, test that function specifically; a completed installation alone does not prove every issue has been resolved.

Receiver firmware is not the same as HEOS software
The receiver’s built-in firmware check uses the remote and on-screen setup menu; the HEOS app is not necessarily required. HEOS app software, HEOS platform firmware and the AVR’s main firmware are related but separate.
Marantz’s HEOS history listed a July–August 2026 staged rollout (shown as July 22–August 5, 2026) with HEOS firmware 3.139.173 for “all core AVR and core HiFi devices” and 3.139.170 for other listed devices. Those are HEOS release entries, not a universal firmware number for every part of every Marantz receiver, and they may change after that release window: Marantz HEOS software-version history.
If no update is available
A “no update” result can have several explanations:

- Your receiver already has the current package offered to it.
- A staged rollout has not reached your unit yet.
- Your model, hardware variant or region is not eligible for that release.
- The receiver is offline, has incomplete network settings or cannot reach Marantz’s server.
- The server is temporarily unavailable.
- You are looking at HEOS app information rather than the receiver’s firmware status.
- An older receiver uses a different or discontinued update path.
Marantz explicitly describes staged availability in its HEOS release history. Do not force-install a package merely because another Marantz model is shown with a newer number.

If an update fails or stalls
- If progress is still displayed or the receiver appears to be restarting, wait. Do not interrupt an active installation.
- If a clear error appears, record its exact wording.
- Confirm that the receiver still has a stable internet connection.
- Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi when practical, particularly after repeated wireless failures.
- Only after confirming that installation is not active, restart the home router if network troubleshooting requires it.
- Restart the receiver only when its on-screen instructions or exact model manual permit it.
- Retry Firmware → Check for Update.
- Consult the exact model’s online manual.
- Contact Marantz support or an authorized service provider if the receiver repeatedly fails, remains unresponsive or cannot boot normally.
Marantz identifies network stability and available bandwidth as possible causes of incomplete AV/AVR updates: AV/AVR firmware-update troubleshooting. Do not repeatedly unplug the receiver during installation, and do not assume a factory reset will repair a failed firmware load; a reset can erase settings and is not a universal recovery method.
Can you update by USB?
USB updating is model-specific, not the default method for current network-capable AVRs. Some older or special products may document a USB or service procedure, but use it only when Marantz gives instructions and a file for your exact model and region in the official manual or support page. Never use another model’s firmware, another regional variant or an improvised file. USB music playback does not prove that USB firmware updating is supported. Legacy and regional-model warnings
Older SR and NR receivers may have different menus, no HEOS functions, discontinued update servers or a model-specific service procedure. Firmware availability can also depend on country, tuner configuration, model suffix and network services. The documented modern path is a starting point for compatible AVRs, not a guarantee for every Marantz product.

Do I need the HEOS app?
Not for the documented built-in AVR firmware check, which uses the remote and receiver display. The app may separately report or update HEOS software.

Is Ethernet mandatory?
No, unless your exact manual says so. Ethernet is a reliability recommendation when Wi-Fi is weak or updates repeatedly fail.

Why does Marantz list a newer version than my receiver?
The listing may concern HEOS rather than main AVR firmware, another model or region, or a staged rollout that has not reached your unit.
Will updating erase Audyssey or Dirac settings?
A routine update does not necessarily reset the receiver, but a failed update, service procedure or model-specific recovery can affect settings. Check the manual and verify configurations after installation.
Can an old SR or NR receiver still be updated?
Possibly, but menus, servers and eligibility differ. Use the exact model’s Marantz manual and support page rather than the current AVR procedure alone.
