Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo update a WatchGuard Firebox safely, first confirm the exact model and its eligible Fireware release, then save a local configuration copy and backup image, follow the route for its management method, and wait for the automatic restart to finish without interrupting power. There is no single “latest” Fireware version that applies to every Firebox: check the model-specific download options and release notes before choosing a target.
1. Check the model, installed version, and upgrade path
Before scheduling an update, record the Firebox model, current Fireware version, management method, and whether the appliance belongs to a FireCluster. Each affects which release and procedure apply.

- In the Fireware Web UI, open System > Upgrade OS to check available versions, or select the exact model on WatchGuard’s software download and release information pages.
- Read the release notes for the candidate version. Confirm that it supports your model and check for release-specific instructions before proceeding.
- If the Firebox is part of a FireCluster, use WatchGuard’s topology-specific upgrade guidance rather than applying standalone-device steps.
WatchGuard’s What’s New page lists Fireware v2026.2.2/v12.12.2 as including important security fixes, alongside other releases. That does not establish that this version is available for every model; verify eligibility and instructions for your device.
2. Make recovery possible before changing Fireware
Save a local copy of the configuration and create or confirm a backup image before a significant upgrade. A backup image contains the configuration, certificates, passphrases, feature key, and other device-specific information. WatchGuard recommends saving backups regularly; Fireware v12.2.1 and later also creates an on-device backup automatically during an OS upgrade.

Backup images are version-sensitive. Images made in Fireware v12.2.1 and later do not include the OS and are stored on the Firebox; images made in v12.2 and earlier include the OS and are stored off-device. An image from a different Fireware version cannot simply be restored against the currently installed version. Follow WatchGuard’s backup and restore overview and restore instructions to match the image and OS versions.
3. Use the procedure for the device’s management method
Fireware Web UI, Policy Manager, and WatchGuard Cloud have different upgrade routes. If WatchGuard System Manager (WSM) manages the Firebox, upgrade WSM before the Firebox; WSM must be the same version as or newer than the Fireware version it manages.

| Management method | Upgrade route | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Fireware Web UI | Open System > Upgrade OS. Choose the direct download-and-install option, or select I Have an Upgrade File and provide the model’s .sysa-dl file. |
Use a file for the exact model and target release. |
| Policy Manager / WSM | In Policy Manager, select File > Upgrade. | Upgrade WSM first; its version must be equal to or higher than the Fireware version. |
| WatchGuard Cloud | Use the Cloud-managed device firmware upgrade route. | Deployment details may affect the steps. See WatchGuard’s Cloud-managed Firebox upgrade guidance. |

4. Install without interrupting the Firebox
Start the upgrade using the route that matches the management method and allow the process to finish. WatchGuard says upgrades can take up to 15 minutes on some models; this is an estimate of upgrade duration, not a guaranteed service window or a measure of complete network outage. The Firebox restarts automatically. Do not cut power or manually restart it while installation is in progress.

WatchGuard notes that a Firebox that has been running for a long time might need a restart before the upgrade to clear temporary memory. Treat that as a pre-upgrade step only; it is not a reason to interrupt an installation already underway.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Verify the result and handle rollback cautiously
- Confirm that the Firebox reports the intended Fireware version and check that the device and network are operating as expected.
- If you use Policy Manager, download the updated configuration from the Firebox after the OS upgrade. Upgrade-related configuration changes might not appear in Policy Manager automatically.
- Keep the pre-upgrade backup and note the installed version so you have the information needed for troubleshooting.
A downgrade is not a simple undo. Downgrading from the Web UI without restoring a backup image resets the configuration to factory defaults. Before attempting rollback, check the version requirements and restore procedure for the backup image you intend to use.
