To update a Viltrox lens safely, first open the official page for your exact lens model and mount and follow the update method listed there. Viltrox products can use different routes—including PC transfer, document-based transfer, or an app—and not every lens supports every method. If you are using PC transfer, the computer should show a “Viltrox DFU” drive after you connect the lens with a data-capable USB cable.
Find the right firmware and update method for your lens
Use Viltrox’s Download Center or the official product page for your exact lens model and mount. Check that the firmware package and instructions name your product; do not use firmware for a similar-looking lens or a different mount. The supported update route and required file can vary by product.

Viltrox documents PC-software, document-based transfer, and app-based methods. App updating is available only for supported products. There is no universal best route: use the one Viltrox specifies for your model, along with that guide’s version-check procedure.

Update through the Viltrox DFU drive on a computer
- Disconnect the lens from the camera. Connect it to the computer using the USB connection and cable specified for your model.
- Locate the drive. If the model’s instructions use PC transfer, look for a drive named “Viltrox DFU.”
- Prepare the package. Extract the downloaded package if the guide instructs you to do so. Copy the specific firmware update file identified by that model’s guide to the DFU drive. File extensions can include
.vtx,.bin, or.dat; an extension alone does not show that a file is correct. - Wait for the transfer and installation. Do not disconnect the lens while the copy is underway. During installation, the drive may disappear temporarily and then reappear.
- Verify the installed version. Follow the model guide’s version-check step. Some procedures use a
DeviceInformation.txtfile, but Viltrox notes that displayed files differ by product and method; that file’s absence by itself does not prove the update failed.
For the current model-specific instructions, start at Viltrox’s Download Center or the relevant product page rather than relying on a guide for another lens.

If the computer does not detect the Viltrox DFU drive
Check the data connection before troubleshooting firmware files. A cable may charge a device without carrying data, so a charging-only cable can leave the lens powered but undetected.
- Disconnect the lens from the camera and confirm that the update method you are following is intended for the exact lens model.
- Use a known data-capable USB cable that fits the lens or adapter’s port. Connect directly to a computer USB port, not through a hub.
- If the drive is still missing, try another known-good data cable, another direct USB port, or another computer.
- If none of those steps makes the drive appear, stop rather than trying firmware for a similar model. Contact Viltrox with the details listed below.
There is no one cable connector that applies to every Viltrox product. Confirm the port on your exact lens or adapter and use a compatible data cable. See Viltrox’s Support Center for its connection guidance and support options.

If the drive disappears during an update
A temporary disappearance can be part of the installation process. Keep the connection in place and allow the model-specific procedure to finish; then check whether the drive returns and verify the firmware version using the guide’s instructions. If the drive does not return or the lens no longer works normally, stop and contact Viltrox before attempting another installation.

Viltrox’s lens FAQ, last updated in April 2024, recommends checking the physical connection and basic camera conditions before concluding that firmware is the cause. Try these steps:

- Make sure the lens is securely mounted and reseat it.
- Check that the camera and lens electronic contacts are clean.
- Confirm the camera battery is sufficiently charged.
- Test whether manual focus works. For autofocus trouble, try a different lighting condition and check whether camera and lens firmware updates are available.
- If aperture or other parameter controls are the problem, try resetting the camera settings.
If the issue began after a camera firmware update, record the camera body model and firmware version as well as the lens model and firmware version. The FAQ’s general troubleshooting advice is at Viltrox’s lens FAQ; check current model-specific instructions for firmware procedures.
Before updating Nikon Z camera firmware
This is a camera-body precaution, not a step for updating a lens: Viltrox’s Download Center warns users to detach third-party lenses and adapters, including Viltrox products, before updating Nikon Z camera firmware. Finish the camera update, let the camera restart normally, and then reattach the lens or adapter.

- The cable and port used, whether you connected through a hub, and whether the DFU drive appeared.
- A concise description of what happened, plus a clear photo or short video of the connection, drive visibility, error, or focus behavior.
Viltrox’s Support Center provides its support guidance. For focus or communication problems, include both the camera and lens models.
