To update a TP-Link router safely, first identify its exact model, hardware revision and purchase region. Then use the update method that model supports: a scheduled Auto Update option, an online update through the router interface or Tether app, or a manual firmware-file upload. Back up your configuration, match the firmware precisely, keep the router powered and use Ethernet for a manual update whenever the router has an Ethernet port.
Before updating: identify the router precisely
TP-Link uses different firmware menus and capabilities across router families, models and hardware revisions. Instructions for one Archer model may not appear on another model, even when the menus look similar. Treat the model number and hardware revision as part of the device’s identity, not as optional details.

Find the model and hardware revision
Look at the label on the router’s underside or rear panel. Record the complete model name and the hardware version, including a label such as Ver: 1.0 or Ver: 2.0. You can also find identifying information on the router’s management page after signing in. Do not assume that two devices with the same marketing name use the same firmware if their hardware revisions differ.

Use the TP-Link support site for the country or region where the router was purchased. Firmware distributed for the EU and firmware distributed for the US can be different. A file that looks correct by model name can still be wrong for the router’s region, hardware revision or both.

Read the release notes and back up settings
Open the release notes for the exact firmware package before installing it. They can list compatibility requirements, changes to the update process and whether the upgrade requires a reset. Save a configuration backup from the router’s administration interface before starting. A reset can erase the internet connection details, wireless names and passwords, port-forwarding rules, parental controls and other custom settings.
Choose the update path your router supports
The correct procedure depends on what your router’s interface offers. Use this decision guide rather than forcing a menu path from another model.
| Supported path | Where it appears | When to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic scheduled update | An Auto Update control in the firmware page | You want the router to install new firmware automatically during a selected time window | Not available on every TP-Link router; the menu location and options are model-dependent |
| Online update | The web management page, or the Tether app on supported Cloud-enabled devices | The router can check for and download an available release itself | Requires a supported model and a stable connection; the interface may show no update even when another model has one |
| Manual firmware-file update | Advanced > System > Firmware Upgrade or a similar model-specific page | The router has no Cloud update, online download fails, or you need to install a downloaded release | You must match model, hardware revision and purchase region exactly |
Turn on automatic updates when the option is available
Automatic updating is a feature, not a universal TP-Link setting. If your router does not show an Auto Update control, do not infer that it is hidden or broken; that model may require online initiation or manual installation.

Example path on an Archer C86
The cited Archer C86 guide uses this route:
- Connect to the router and open
tplinkwifi.netin a browser. - Sign in to the router’s administrator account.
- Open Advanced > System > Firmware Update.
- Turn on Auto Update.
- Choose the permitted update time or window.
- Select Save and leave the router connected to power.
That guide states that the router will install a new version automatically at the specified time when one is available. The Archer C86 interface illustration shows a 03:00–05:00 window. Treat that as an example from that model’s guide, not as a universal default or a required schedule for every TP-Link router.
Understand scheduling behavior
Choose a period when a brief interruption will cause the least trouble. A router reboots as part of an update, so active video calls, downloads, games and smart-home connections can be interrupted. The C86 guide also says an update may be rescheduled if the router detects that someone is using the internet during the selected period. Other models can use different rules, so follow the text shown in your own firmware page.
If Auto Update is missing
Check the exact model and hardware revision again, then open that device’s manual and support page. Some routers have no scheduled-update feature. They may still support a manual online check, a Tether notification or a firmware-file upload, but you should not substitute the C86 menu path for a different device.

Check for and install an online update
TP-Link separates Cloud-enabled routers from routers that do not support TP-Link Cloud. On a supported Cloud-enabled model, the router can present an update without requiring you to download a file first.

Use the web management page
- Connect to the router and sign in at its management address, commonly
tplinkwifi.netwhere the model supports that address. - Open the firmware or system-update page shown for your model.
- Look for an Update icon or an available-version notice.
- Open and read the displayed release notes.
- Start the update only after confirming that the model, hardware revision and region shown by the interface are correct.
- Keep the router powered and wait for the reboot to finish. Do not close the process by switching off the router.
The exact labels can differ. If there is no Update icon or available-version message, the router may be current, offline, or a model that does not support online updating.
Use the Tether app on supported devices
- Open Tether while your phone is connected to the TP-Link router.
- Open More > System > Firmware Update.
- Review any firmware notification and the release notes.
- Start the update and keep the router powered until it has restarted.
This app route is available only on compatible devices. A missing firmware notification does not prove that no firmware exists; it can mean that the router does not support this Cloud-based path or that no release is currently offered to it.

Install firmware manually from a downloaded file
Manual installation is the fallback for routers without Cloud support and for situations in which an online download is unavailable. It gives you more control, but it also puts the compatibility check and file handling on you.
Download the correct package
- Read the router label or management page and write down the complete model number.
- Record the hardware revision exactly, including the
Ver: X.Ynotation when shown. - Open the TP-Link support page for the region where the product was purchased.
- Select the exact model and hardware revision.
- Read the release notes and download the firmware package intended for that device.
- Extract the downloaded archive on your computer. The upgrade normally requires the extracted firmware file, often a file with a
.binextension, rather than the compressed archive itself.
Never rename a file to make it appear compatible, and never use firmware for a different model, hardware revision or region. TP-Link warns that an incorrect file can damage the device and may affect warranty coverage.
Prepare a wired connection
Connect the computer to a LAN port on the router with an Ethernet cable before starting a manual update. TP-Link advises against using Wi-Fi for manual firmware installation when the router has an Ethernet port. A wired connection reduces the chance that a wireless drop interrupts the management session. If a particular device has no Ethernet port, follow that model’s instructions instead of assuming a cable is possible.

Upload and apply the firmware
- Confirm that the configuration backup is stored somewhere you can access if the router resets.
- Sign in to the router at
tplinkwifi.netor the management address specified for that model. - Open Advanced > System > Firmware Upgrade, or the equivalent firmware-upload page named in the model manual.
- Select the extracted firmware file.
- Check the file name and the on-screen model or version information one more time.
- Choose Upgrade, Start or the equivalent command.
- Wait while the router uploads, installs the firmware and reboots. Do not remove power, unplug the Ethernet cable or navigate away in a way that interrupts the process.
The router can be unreachable for several minutes during the reboot. One TP-Link support guide gives approximately three minutes as an estimate after restart; that is a guide-specific estimate, not a guaranteed completion time for every model. Wait longer if the model’s manual says so, and do not repeatedly power-cycle a router that is still showing signs of installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety rules that prevent a failed upgrade
- Match all three compatibility identifiers: model, hardware revision and purchase region.
- Keep power connected: a power loss during installation can leave the router unable to boot normally.
- Keep the network link stable: use Ethernet for a manual update when an Ethernet port is available.
- Do not interrupt the reboot: the router may restart more than once or take longer than a normal reboot.
- Back up first: some releases can reset settings, and a reset can remove internet and Wi-Fi configuration.
- Read release notes: they can identify required resets, changed behavior or model-specific preparation.
- Do not improvise with another model’s instructions: menu names, update support and scheduling behavior vary by device.
Verify the firmware after the router restarts
Sign in again after the router becomes reachable. Return to the firmware or system-information page and verify that the installed version matches the release you intended to install. Check that the internet connection, wireless networks and important services work before disconnecting the computer or restoring the router to its normal location.
If the release required a reset, restore the saved configuration only through the restore function intended for that model and firmware. Do not assume that a backup from a different hardware revision is interchangeable. If the router retained its settings, still review wireless security, guest access, port forwarding and parental-control rules because a firmware change can alter available options.

| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No Auto Update control | The model or hardware revision may not support scheduled automatic updates. | Check the exact model manual. Use the supported online or manual-file method instead. |
| No online update appears | The router may be current, offline, or not Cloud-enabled. | Confirm internet access, then check the model-specific support page. If online updating is unsupported or fails, use the correct manual package. |
| Download or update fails partway through | An unstable connection, incorrect package or temporary service problem can interrupt the process. | Do not retry with a different model’s file. Verify model, revision and region, use Ethernet for a manual attempt, and follow the model’s recovery guidance. |
| The router reboots and settings are gone | The release may require or trigger a reset. | Restore the configuration backup if the model and firmware accept it, then re-enter any settings that were not included. |
| The router is unreachable after clicking Upgrade | It may still be installing or rebooting. | Wait for the model’s stated recovery period and observe the status lights. Do not remove power during an active installation. |

Which update method should you use?
Choose automatic scheduling when all of these are true
- Your firmware page explicitly provides an Auto Update control.
- You have selected a time when a reboot will not disrupt important activity.
- You have already made a configuration backup and reviewed the model’s release-note behavior.
Choose an online update when
- The web interface shows an available Update control, or Tether shows a firmware notification under More > System > Firmware Update.
- You want the router to select the compatible release rather than handling a downloaded archive yourself.
- The router has a stable internet connection and you can leave it powered through the reboot.
Choose a manual file when
- The router does not support TP-Link Cloud or scheduled automatic updates.
- The online check is unavailable or the download repeatedly fails.
- You need to follow a specific release supplied for the exact model, hardware revision and purchase region.
For any method, the compatibility check and uninterrupted power are more important than the convenience of the interface. The safest update is the one explicitly supported by the router’s own manual and firmware page.
What automatic updates do—and do not—guarantee
Turning on Auto Update tells a supported router to check and install a new version during its configured window. It does not make every TP-Link router eligible for automatic updating, remove the need to read release notes, or eliminate the brief outage caused by a reboot. It also does not make firmware from another region or hardware revision safe to install. Keep the configuration backup and the router’s exact identification details even after automatic updating is enabled.
