To change the videos rotating during an active YouTube gaming stream, update the playlist in OBS—not the stream settings in YouTube Live Control Room. OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists, looping, and shuffle, but its documentation does not promise that editing an active playlist will be seamless. Test the exact change on your setup before relying on it during a broadcast.
What controls the video rotation?
OBS supplies the visuals in your broadcast. For a rotation of local media files, its documented playlist-capable source is VLC Video. YouTube Live Control Room is a separate part of the setup: it manages stream configuration and metadata, including the stream key, rather than the media playlist in OBS.
This applies when the rotating videos are files you play through OBS. If you mean switching the game you are playing, or changing the game/category shown on YouTube, that is a different task: change the relevant scene or source in OBS for the picture, and update the stream’s metadata in YouTube Live Control Room as needed.
Prepare the OBS playlist source
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to appear. If you use 64-bit OBS, the OBS documentation calls out matching VLC’s architecture.
- Open the scene that supplies the stream. In OBS, select the scene containing the video rotation. In the Sources area, add or select a VLC Video source. If VLC Video is unavailable, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches your OBS installation.
- Set up the playlist. In the VLC Video source properties, add the local media files you want to rotate and arrange them in the desired order. Use the source’s loop option if the list should repeat; use shuffle if the order should vary.
- Check the result in OBS. Confirm that the selected source is visible in the scene and that the files play as intended before you depend on the rotation in a live broadcast.
Update the rotation while live
Keep the active stream running and make the content change in OBS. The playlist belongs to the VLC Video source; changing YouTube’s stream settings will not edit that source’s file list.

- Identify the active source. In OBS, open the scene currently feeding the broadcast and locate its VLC Video source.
- Make the playlist change in the source properties. Add, remove, or reorder the files in the playlist, then apply or close the properties as appropriate for your OBS version.
- Watch the program output. Check the OBS preview or program output and the live stream after the change. Confirm that the intended file plays and that audio and video remain as expected.
- Use a controlled transition if needed. If the change produces an unwanted visual interruption, switch to a backup scene or use a brief transition while you make the update. This is an operational precaution, not a guarantee that playlist edits will be seamless.
OBS documents playlist support and the loop and shuffle controls, but not whether a particular in-place edit to an active playlist will avoid a visible interruption. Behavior may depend on your OBS/VLC setup and the timing of the edit. Rehearse the same steps with the same files and scene before a broadcast where continuity matters.
Keep rotation changes separate from YouTube settings
- Changing which local videos play: edit the OBS VLC Video source playlist.
- Changing stream details: use YouTube Live Control Room for stream setup or metadata, such as the title or game/category information.
- Changing what gameplay is shown: change the relevant OBS scene or source; updating a playlist does not switch the game capture itself.
Troubleshooting
VLC Video is missing from OBS sources
Install VLC, then check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically notes the match for 64-bit OBS. Reopen the source-adding menu after installation.

The new file does not appear in the rotation
Reopen the VLC Video source properties and confirm the file was added to that source’s playlist. Also check that you edited the source in the scene currently being broadcast; a similarly named source in another scene may not control the output.
The rotation order is unexpected
Review the playlist order and whether shuffle is enabled. Disable shuffle if you need a predictable sequence.

The stream appears to pause or change abruptly during an edit
Do not assume active-playlist editing is seamless. Test the same edit outside an important broadcast. For a live change, consider a brief scene transition or a backup scene, and verify the output before continuing.
The YouTube title or game category changed, but the videos did not
You changed stream metadata rather than the OBS media playlist. Return to the active scene in OBS and edit its VLC Video source.
