The most reliable way to lower electricity costs for a 24/7 YouTube stream in India is to measure the complete setup’s power draw, calculate its energy use, and apply the rates and charges on your own electricity bill. Then reduce workload one setting at a time and check that the stream remains stable and looks acceptable. There is no dependable universal figure for a typical stream’s power use or monthly cost: both depend on the equipment and your local tariff.
Measure the whole setup before estimating its cost
Use the average input power in watts while your usual stream is running. A computer’s power-supply rating is its capacity, not a measurement of what the complete setup draws from the wall.
A plug-in energy meter that reports watts and accumulated kilowatt-hours (kWh) can help you measure consumption. Include the equipment you want counted: the computer or encoder, a display if it stays on, networking gear, capture equipment, and dedicated cooling. Check that a meter fits your local plug and is rated for the connected load. The meter provides a measurement; it does not reduce electricity use by itself.
Measure under ordinary streaming conditions, including your normal scenes, sources, resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings. If you stream different kinds of content or use the computer for other work, measure the relevant periods separately so the result reflects the stream rather than unrelated activity.

Calculate daily and monthly energy use
Once you have an average whole-setup draw, convert watts to kWh with this formula:
Energy (kWh) = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000
- Daily: average watts × 24 ÷ 1,000.
- 30-day planning month: average watts × 720 ÷ 1,000, or average watts × 0.72.
The 720 hours represent a continuous 30-day planning month; they are arithmetic, not a measured typical month or typical stream. Your actual reading will depend on the number of hours streamed and the equipment included.
Turn kWh into an estimate from your electricity bill
For a rough variable-energy estimate, multiply the calculated kWh by the applicable marginal energy rate for your household. Then account for the other items on your current bill: fixed charges, slab effects, duties, taxes, fuel adjustments, and any subsidy. A single per-unit rate may not capture what additional consumption costs under your tariff.

India does not have one universal household electricity price for this calculation. The Ministry of Power says state electricity regulatory commissions determine retail tariffs and state governments may subsidize consumer classes. The Central Electricity Authority compiles an annual analysis based on state commission tariff orders. Your state, DISCOM, consumer category, usage slab, and current bill matter. See the Ministry of Power and the Central Electricity Authority for their respective tariff information.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A Ministry of Power release dated 23 June 2023 described an eight-hour solar period specified by the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, with solar-hour rates set 10%–20% below normal and peak-hour rates 10%–20% above normal. That release also set framework implementation dates for certain consumer groups and linked effectiveness for smart-meter consumers to installation. It does not establish your current home schedule. Check your DISCOM bill and the applicable state order rather than assuming those rates apply to your stream.
Reduce the workload without compromising the stream
Change one setting at a time, then check YouTube’s stream health, dropped frames, encoder performance, audio and picture quality, and the wall-meter reading. OBS’s performance guidance describes adjustments to try when resources are constrained; it does not promise a particular electricity saving. Lower computer workload does not automatically mean lower whole-system power draw.

Try a hardware encoder, then measure
OBS explains that hardware encoding shifts encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU and generally recommends hardware encoders for performance. Options include NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync, and Apple VideoToolbox, subject to the machine, drivers, and current compatibility. OBS also cautions that older encoder generations can produce lower image quality than software encoding at similar bitrates. Compare the actual output and wall draw on your own computer; a lower CPU load alone does not establish a lower bill.
Lower resolution or frame rate only as needed
If your encoder is struggling, try reducing output resolution or frame rate. For example, OBS suggests reducing from 60 fps to 30 fps when 60 fps is not working. A lower setting may ease processing, but it also changes the delivered stream. Check that the result still suits your content and viewers.

Simplify scenes and sources
Remove unnecessary scene complexity, limit expensive sources, and reduce unnecessary browser-source work. After each change, confirm that sources still behave as intended and that the stream remains healthy. Record the meter reading over comparable operating periods before and after; do not treat a change in consumption as a saving from one setting if the stream hours, room temperature, equipment, or other conditions also changed.

Compare changes by energy, stream quality, and bill impact
When considering a setting or hardware change, compare like with like. A lower watt reading is useful only if it was measured over the same number of hours and under comparable stream conditions.
- Stream quality and reliability: compare resolution, frame rate, audio/video quality, dropped frames, and encoder overload.
- Measured energy: compare average wall watts and kWh over the same duration, with the same scenes and operating conditions.
- Bill impact: apply the relevant local energy charges and time periods, including bill components beyond the headline rate.
- Purchase economics: compare the cost of new hardware with measured monthly rupee savings. A payback period cannot be calculated without the purchase price, applicable tariff, and measured before-and-after consumption.
Choose how to keep the 24/7 stream running
YouTube supports streaming by webcam, mobile device, or encoder. An encoder is the option that converts video into a digital format for YouTube; a continuously running PC is one possible way to provide that feed, not a requirement for every YouTube stream. If the stream depends on a home computer, include its measured draw—and any display or cooling that stays on—in your cost calculation.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The three steps are: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.

Troubleshoot your estimate and stream
- The estimated cost looks too high or too low: check that you measured input watts at the wall, not the power supply’s rated capacity, and that you counted only the devices you intended to include.
- Your bill does not match kWh multiplied by one rate: review the applicable slab, fixed charges, duties, taxes, fuel adjustments, subsidy, and any time-of-day schedule on your current bill or local order.
- A hardware encoder lowers CPU load but not the meter reading: CPU load is not total system energy. Compare complete-system wall draw and output quality under the same conditions.
- A lower frame rate or resolution causes an unacceptable result: restore the previous setting and try another single adjustment, such as simplifying a demanding scene or source.
- The stream becomes unstable after a change: check stream health and encoder performance, undo the last change if needed, and test adjustments separately before leaving the stream unattended.
- You cannot isolate the stream’s electricity use: compare readings across similar periods and account for other computer activity and devices included in the measurement.
Sources and limits
The tariff framework above reflects the Ministry of Power release dated 23 June 2023; local applicability and current schedules must be checked with the state commission or DISCOM. OBS’s hardware-encoding guide is dated 11 January 2022, and its encoding-performance troubleshooting guide is dated 12 June 2021, so check current encoder support and software settings for your system. YouTube’s streaming options describe webcam, mobile, and encoder workflows. No cited source establishes a typical wattage, monthly kWh figure, or monthly rupee cost for an Indian 24/7 YouTube stream.
