The safest VPS kernel update is a controlled package update followed by a planned reboot, with an out-of-band console, a restorable snapshot, and the previous kernel left installed. A newly installed kernel is not active until the VPS boots into it. Before changing anything, identify the distribution, record the current kernel, verify recovery access and disk space, then validate networking, storage, services, and application health after the reboot.

What a kernel update changes
The Linux kernel is the layer that manages CPU scheduling, memory, storage, networking, devices, security controls, and system calls used by applications. A distribution kernel update normally installs a new kernel image, modules, firmware-related packages, and bootloader metadata. It does not replace the kernel currently running in memory.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check the active version with:
uname -r
The command reports the kernel that booted the VPS, not merely the newest package stored on disk. After an update, uname -r can continue to show the old version until the system is rebooted.
A reboot is required to activate a newer kernel. Canonical’s Ubuntu Livepatch documentation explicitly distinguishes live security patching from a full kernel upgrade: live patching can address selected high- and critical-severity fixes, but moving to a newer kernel still requires a reboot. Firmware, CPU microcode, shared libraries, and other low-level updates can also independently make a reboot advisable or required.

Decide whether this is a normal update, live patch, or fast reboot
| Approach | Does it install and activate a newer kernel? | Interruption | Best use | Main limitations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal package update and reboot | Yes, after reboot | Planned downtime while services stop and the VPS starts | Routine security, bug-fix, and feature updates | Requires a maintenance window and working boot/recovery path |
| Live kernel patching | No new kernel version is booted; selected fixes are applied to the running kernel | Usually no reboot for covered fixes | Reducing emergency-reboot pressure for supported security fixes | Limited to supported distributions, architectures, kernel versions, flavours, and patch types; does not automatically install all APT security updates |
kexec or a live-update framework |
Yes, by loading another kernel directly | Potentially shorter interruption than a firmware-initialized reboot | Specialized environments with tested automation and provider support | May bypass normal shutdown and firmware initialization; rollback, device state, storage, and workload behavior need dedicated testing |
Use the normal reboot procedure unless you have a documented, tested reason to choose another method. A short apparent interruption is not the same as zero downtime: the network stack, storage paths, service processes, and application state still need to transition safely.
Pre-update safety checklist
1. Identify the operating system and current kernel
Record the release and kernel before touching packages:
cat /etc/os-release
uname -r
hostnamectl
On Debian-family systems, list installed kernel packages:
dpkg -l 'linux-image*' 'linux-headers*' | grep '^ii'
On RHEL-family systems, use:
rpm -q kernel
rpm -q kernel-core
Save the output in the change record. Also write down critical services, listening ports, mount points, firewall rules, monitoring checks, and the expected application health checks. Knowing what was running makes post-reboot diagnosis much faster.
2. Confirm an out-of-band recovery path
SSH is not a recovery channel if the new kernel fails to bring up the network. Before scheduling the update, confirm that the provider’s web console, serial console, rescue environment, or equivalent out-of-band access actually opens and accepts input. Locate the bootloader menu and learn how to select an older kernel. If the platform does not expose a console, verify the documented rescue and rebuild process before proceeding.
A snapshot or backup is useful only if it is recent, complete, and restorable. Check its timestamp, included disks, retention, and restoration procedure. For databases and other stateful workloads, use an application-consistent backup or quiesce writes as required; a crash-consistent disk snapshot may not be sufficient by itself.

3. Check storage, especially /boot
df -h / /boot
findmnt /boot
Kernel images and initramfs files can fill a small separate /boot filesystem even when the root filesystem has plenty of free space. Leave enough room for the new image, its modules, initramfs generation, and package-manager transaction. Do not delete the running or known-good kernel merely to make room. Remove old kernels only after a successful boot and only with the distribution’s supported cleanup tools.
4. Check provider and workload constraints
- Read provider notices for required bootloader settings, virtual hardware changes, maintenance events, or unsupported custom kernels.
- Check whether the VPS uses a provider-managed kernel rather than a kernel stored inside the guest. Some platforms boot a host-selected kernel, so the provider’s procedure takes precedence.
- Inventory DKMS and other out-of-tree modules, such as vendor storage, network, VPN, or monitoring drivers. They must build and load against the target kernel.
- Identify clustered or replicated services. Drain or fail over traffic before rebooting one member, and confirm quorum rules before taking any node offline.
- Define success criteria: SSH login, expected routes, mounted filesystems, firewall behavior, service status, application probes, monitoring, and backup agents.
Choose a maintenance window
Estimate the interruption from a normal reboot, then add time for package installation, boot troubleshooting, and validation. Notify users and operators, freeze deployments, and arrange an escalation path. Stop or drain stateful workloads according to their documentation rather than relying on an abrupt power cycle.
A normal reboot is preferable to a forced reset because it lets systemd stop services, flush filesystems, unmount devices, and execute shutdown hooks. Avoid a provider “hard reboot” unless the guest is already unresponsive and the recovery risk is understood.
Update an Ubuntu or Debian-family VPS
1. Refresh package metadata and inspect pending changes
sudo apt update
apt list --upgradable
Review the proposed transaction before accepting it. Confirm that the kernel packages come from the configured distribution or provider repositories. Do not add a random mainline build, an untrusted third-party repository, or a personally rebuilt kernel simply to obtain a newer version. Distribution kernel packages include integration with the bootloader, initramfs, security updates, and supported modules.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
2. Apply the supported kernel update
Use the distribution’s kernel meta-package and normal upgrade path. The exact meta-package depends on the release and architecture; common installations use a package such as linux-generic, but you should confirm the package already used by the VPS rather than guessing.
dpkg -l 'linux-*' | grep '^ii' | grep -E 'linux-(generic|image|headers)'
sudo apt upgrade
If the package manager reports held packages, broken dependencies, insufficient /boot space, or a DKMS build failure, stop and fix that condition before rebooting. Do not force the transaction or remove the old kernel to silence an error.

3. Inspect the resulting boot entries
grep -E "menuentry |submenu " /boot/grub/grub.cfg | head -n 20
dpkg -l 'linux-image*' | grep '^ii'
The exact GRUB layout varies. Confirm that the new kernel and at least one previous known-good kernel are installed. Keep the previous entry available until the new boot has passed validation.
4. Reboot in the approved window
sudo systemctl reboot
Warn connected users first and drain traffic where necessary. The SSH session will close. Wait for the provider console to show the boot sequence and use it if SSH does not return within the expected interval.
5. Validate the boot
uname -r
systemctl --failed
journalctl -b -p err..alert
ip route
findmnt
systemctl status ssh
Then test the actual service from an independent location. Confirm DNS behavior, IPv4 and IPv6 routes if used, firewall rules, attached storage, clocks, TLS termination, queues, databases, background workers, monitoring, and backup agents. A successful SSH login alone does not prove that the application is healthy.
Update a RHEL-family VPS
1. Review repositories and available kernel packages
cat /etc/redhat-release
uname -r
sudo dnf check-update kernel kernel-core kernel-modules
On older RHEL-family releases that use Yum, use the equivalent supported yum command. Keep the repositories approved for the particular RHEL release and subscription. Red Hat’s documented kernel update and live-patching boundaries apply to supported releases and configurations; an arbitrary external kernel can fall outside support.
2. Apply the update without removing the old kernel
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-core kernel-modules
The package transaction may also update related dependencies. Read the transaction summary, verify free space, and investigate DKMS or module build errors before accepting it. RHEL systems normally retain multiple installable kernels according to their configured install-only policy. Check that policy rather than manually deleting packages.

3. Reboot and validate
sudo systemctl reboot
After the VPS returns:
uname -r
systemctl --failed
journalctl -b -p err..alert
ip route
findmnt
Run the same application, storage, firewall, monitoring, and backup checks used for the pre-change baseline. Do not mark the change complete until the intended kernel is active and the service-level checks pass.
What Livepatch can and cannot do
Canonical describes Ubuntu Livepatch as applying high- and critical-severity kernel security fixes without a reboot. Its support is conditional: patches are matched to the exact running kernel version, and coverage depends on the Ubuntu release, architecture, kernel version, and flavour. Officially released kernels from the supported updates channel are within scope; personally rebuilt kernels and several development or PPA variants are not.
Livepatch is not a general update manager. It does not automatically install every APT security update, userspace fix, firmware update, or new kernel package. A system can report that live patches are current while still needing a planned package upgrade and reboot.
Use live patching to reduce exposure while arranging maintenance, not to eliminate maintenance windows indefinitely. After a live-patched period, reboot into a supported current kernel and repeat normal post-boot validation.
RHEL live-patching tooling follows a similar principle: it is intended for supported security and bug-fix changes that do not require an immediate reboot. It does not make every kernel or userspace update reboot-free. Check the release-specific support matrix before enabling it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why kexec and live-update frameworks need extra caution
kexec loads a kernel and initramfs into memory and transfers execution directly to the new kernel. Because it can avoid normal firmware initialization, it may shorten a transition on some VPS platforms. A forced path can also bypass normal shutdown handling, which means services may not receive their usual stop and flush opportunities.
Best Value
The Linux kernel Live Update Orchestrator is a specialized, kexec-based transition intended to preserve selected resources and keep designated devices operational, including in some cloud workloads. It is not a universal replacement for a normal reboot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Confirm that the VPS provider supports the mechanism and that the virtual devices you use are compatible.
- Test database durability, filesystem behavior, network reinitialization, timekeeping, firewall state, and monitoring in a staging or disposable instance.
- Keep a provider console and an ordinary reboot path available. A failed kexec transition may leave fewer clues than a normal boot failure.
- Document exactly which shutdown hooks are skipped and how you will drain or freeze application work first.
For most single VPS deployments, the lower operational risk of a normal reboot outweighs the time saved by kexec.
Rollback when the new kernel is unhealthy
If the VPS boots but services fail
- Use the console or SSH to confirm the active kernel with
uname -r. - Collect evidence before changing more packages:
journalctl -b,journalctl -k,systemctl --failed, module errors, route output, mount errors, and application logs. - Check common causes such as a missing DKMS module, changed device name, failed initramfs generation, firewall rules not loading, an unavailable filesystem, or an application that depends on an incompatible kernel interface.
- If the workload is impaired and the prior kernel is known good, reboot through the normal path and select that previous entry in the bootloader.
- After recovery, preserve the logs and package state, then investigate the failed kernel in a maintenance environment rather than repeatedly rebooting production.
If the VPS does not boot or the filesystem is damaged
- Open the provider’s out-of-band console and capture the visible boot error.
- Select the previous kernel from the bootloader, if the menu is available.
- If the bootloader or filesystem cannot start, attach the disk to the provider’s rescue environment or use the documented recovery mode.
- Mount filesystems carefully, copy logs and package records, and repair only after preserving the evidence.
- Restore the pre-change snapshot when repair is slower or riskier than restoration. Recheck application consistency and data loss boundaries before bringing services online.
Do not delete the failed kernel until you have identified why it failed and confirmed that the rollback kernel remains bootable. If a provider-managed kernel is involved, open a provider support case with the console output, kernel versions, package transaction, and timestamps.
Post-reboot validation checklist
- Kernel:
uname -rmatches the intended version. - Boot: no emergency-mode prompt, initramfs error, or filesystem recovery loop appears in the console.
- Units:
systemctl --failedis empty or every listed failure is understood. - Logs: review
journalctl -b -p err..alertand kernel messages for storage, network, module, or timekeeping errors. - Network: SSH works, expected interfaces and routes exist, DNS and IPv6 behave as designed, and firewall policy is enforced.
- Storage: all required filesystems are mounted, permissions are correct, and application volumes are writable where intended.
- Services: web servers, databases, queues, workers, schedulers, and agents are active and passing functional checks.
- Operations: monitoring, alert delivery, log shipping, backups, and certificate-renewal jobs are working.
- Capacity: disk space, memory pressure, load, and network errors are within the pre-update baseline.
Common mistakes and their safer alternatives
| Mistake | Why it is risky | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Installing a random mainline or third-party kernel | It may lack distribution integration, compatible modules, signing, or provider support | Use the distribution or provider repository unless you have a tested, supportable reason not to |
| Assuming package installation means the kernel is active | The running kernel remains in memory until reboot | Plan the reboot and verify uname -r afterward |
| Deleting the old kernel immediately | There is no known-good boot entry if the new one fails | Keep the previous kernel until validation and rollback risk are acceptable |
| Relying on SSH as the only recovery method | A bad kernel can prevent networking or the SSH service from starting | Test a provider console, serial console, rescue mode, or equivalent |
Rebooting without checking /boot |
A full boot partition can interrupt initramfs or bootloader installation | Check df -h /boot and resolve space issues first |
| Calling livepatch a complete maintenance strategy | It covers only supported live patches and does not update all packages | Use it as a bridge, then perform supported package upgrades and a planned reboot |
| Using a forced reset for convenience | Services and filesystems may not shut down cleanly | Use systemctl reboot unless the guest is already hung |
A repeatable change record
For each kernel change, record the hostname, distribution release, active and target kernel versions, package repositories, free space, backup or snapshot identifier, console test, DKMS status, maintenance window, reboot time, validation results, and rollback decision. This is more than paperwork: it gives the next operator the exact information needed to choose an older boot entry or restore the correct snapshot under pressure.
The safe default is therefore straightforward: use supported repositories, inspect the transaction, retain a previous kernel, reboot normally in a planned window, validate from the console and the application layer, and roll back deliberately if the new boot is not healthy.
