Ryoku has two update paths: run ryoku update for Ryoku’s own packages and desktop configuration, and sudo pacman -Syu for a full Arch system upgrade, including base packages and the kernel. To install a repository package safely, use pacman as part of a full upgrade, such as sudo pacman -Syu package_name; do not refresh repositories with -Sy and leave the system partially upgraded.
Update Ryoku’s own packages and desktop configuration
Run:
ryoku updateAccording to the Ryoku project README, this command takes a snapshot, updates packages from Ryoku’s signed [ryoku] repository, refreshes desktop configuration in your home directory, reloads the shell, and takes a second snapshot after the update. It also reports how many system packages are pending; the README says that if the package update fails, the later update actions stop.

This updates Ryoku’s layer, not the complete Arch system. The README describes the operation as updating packages by name rather than performing a full system upgrade.

Install a package from a configured repository
For a package available in the configured pacman repositories, add its package name to a full-upgrade command:

sudo pacman -Syu package_nameReplace package_name with the repository package’s actual name. Pacman refreshes repository databases, upgrades installed packages, and installs the requested package in the same transaction.

Why not use pacman -Sy package_name?
Arch’s system maintenance guidance says partial upgrades are unsupported. Refreshing databases without upgrading the installed system can leave newer repository libraries inconsistent with older installed packages. If a database refresh has already succeeded but the full upgrade failed, resolve the failure and complete the upgrade before doing other package operations.
Other ways to get software
Ryoku’s FAQ also names the AUR and Flatpak as software options. These are alternatives when an application is not being installed from a configured pacman repository; availability and maintenance depend on the specific app and source. Ryoku’s CLI documentation describes the ryoku command as orchestrating pacman, yay, and snapper. Check the package and its source before choosing an AUR package or other route.

The Ryoku project documents signed packages in the [ryoku] repository and identifies ryoku-keyring as the package that establishes package-signature trust. Follow Ryoku’s current security and update guidance for release-specific details.

Recover if a Ryoku update causes a problem
Ryoku documents two recovery routes: run ryoku rollback, or select a previous snapshot from the Limine boot menu. The project README describes these as options if ryoku update causes trouble.
