Update Pixel Buds firmware from the paired Android device’s Pixel Buds settings, or use Google’s web companion app on a supported computer. You can also start an update manually from the firmware screen. Google’s automatic process downloads and installs in stages, so leave time for both and keep the earbuds and case charged.
Update Pixel Buds from an Android phone
Google recommends keeping both the Pixel Buds app and the Android device up to date. On a Pixel phone, connect the earbuds, then open Settings > Connected devices and tap the gear beside your Pixel Buds. On another Android phone or tablet, open the Pixel Buds app.

- Open More settings > Firmware update.
- To check status, read the message on that screen. If it does not mention an available update, Google says the latest firmware is installed.
- For an automatic update, use the earbuds with a Pixel or Android 6.0-or-later device. Google says the download happens the next time they are used and takes about 10 minutes; you can continue using them during the download.
- Once the earbuds and charging case have sufficient charge, put the earbuds in the case. Installation starts the next time they are placed there and takes about 10 minutes, according to Google.
An installation can pause if, for example, you remove the earbuds from the case. Google says it will resume at the next opportunity, and completing the process may take multiple attempts. Check More settings > Firmware update to see the status. Google’s Pixel Buds firmware instructions explain the automatic process and status messages.
Start a firmware update manually
- Place the earbuds securely in their charging case.
- Open the Pixel Buds settings on a Pixel phone, or the Pixel Buds app on another Android device.
- Go to More settings > Firmware update.
- Tap Manual update available, then follow the on-screen instructions.
Google estimates about 15 minutes for the manual update flow. Menu wording can change with app or settings updates, so follow the labels shown on your paired device. Google’s support guide documents this manual option.

Update from a computer with Google’s web companion app
The web companion app supports Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel Buds Pro 2, and Pixel Buds 2a. Google recommends Chrome or Edge and lists these minimum operating-system versions: ChromeOS 128, macOS Sonoma (version 14), or Windows 11. The web app manages firmware and can connect to one device at a time. Google’s compatibility and web companion instructions provide the current requirements.
- Pair and connect the earbuds to the computer over Bluetooth.
- Open the Pixel Buds web companion app in Chrome or Edge.
- Grant the site access to the earbuds when prompted, then select the connected buds and follow the firmware controls.
If a Windows update is stuck at 0% or 50%
- Return to the web app homepage and remove the connected Pixel Buds.
- In Windows, open Bluetooth & devices settings and remove the Pixel Buds device.
- Pair the earbuds with the computer again.
- Return to the web companion app, select the earbuds, and retry the update.
Which firmware version should you expect?
There is no single version number to use as the update target for all three models. Check the firmware screen for the specific earbuds you own; if it does not show an available update, Google reports that the latest firmware is installed.
