To get Microsoft Office updates alongside Windows updates, turn on the Windows Update setting labeled Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows. On Windows 11, you’ll find it at Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options. If you need an Office update right now, you can skip Windows Update entirely and check from inside an Office app with File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
Microsoft says this option enables Office updates through Microsoft Update. It is not a switch that covers every Microsoft product, so the rest of this guide explains what it does, how to find it on Windows 11 and Windows 10, what to do when it is missing, and where managed devices differ.

Turn on Office updates in Windows 11
Microsoft documents this setting as the way to receive Office updates through Microsoft Update when you run Windows Update. Follow these steps:

- Select Advanced options.
- Turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows.
- Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates. Installation can depend on the update, and Windows may need a restart to finish. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ covers general update and restart behavior.
Microsoft’s Update Office with Microsoft Update instructions describe this route, including its use for some earlier Office versions and volume-license installations.

Turn on the setting in Windows 10
On Windows 10, the documented path is different. Follow these steps:
- Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Under Update options, turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows.
Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Turning on this option keeps Office updates flowing through Microsoft Update, but it does not restore Windows support. Consider moving to a supported version of Windows, because a device without Windows security updates is exposed in ways an Office setting cannot fix. The date is stated in Microsoft’s driver-support documentation.
Update Office directly from an app
If you want to check for an Office update without waiting for Windows Update, use the control inside any Windows Office app, such as Word:

- Open Word or another Microsoft 365 or Office app.
- Select File > Account. In classic Outlook, select Office Account instead.
- Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
Microsoft’s guide to updating Microsoft 365 or Office for Windows gives the same steps and explains when the control is missing.
When the option or update control is missing
If the Office update control does not appear, Microsoft says the installation may be volume licensed, or your company’s policy may manage updates. In that case:
- Personal PC: confirm you are signed in to the Office account that owns the license, then retry the Windows Update route above.
- Work or school PC: contact your organization’s IT administrator or help desk. Group Policy or Cloud Update settings decide how updates arrive, and workarounds that bypass that policy are not appropriate.
- Managed devices: Microsoft says the optional update described below makes no changes when updates are managed by Group Policy or Cloud Update. If Office updates remain stale on a managed device, the administrator is the person who can change the update source.
What the option covers and what it does not
Describe this setting as an update-delivery option for eligible Microsoft products, with Office as Microsoft’s explicit example. Do not assume every Microsoft application, update channel, or update type arrives through it.

Microsoft’s KB5002907 page shows how conditional delivery works in practice. That optional update is offered only to specified Microsoft 365 Apps installations and channels. It is not an operating-system update, and it does not change managed Group Policy or Cloud Update settings. It is a single dated example, not a general rule for every Office update. The same page notes that rollout was paused after reports of unexpected results affecting some Office 2016 and Office 2019 devices. Check that page for its current status before installing this specific update.

There are two user-facing routes. Compare them by where the control lives, whether the installation is managed, and whether you are enabling a delivery option or checking manually for an Office update.

| Factor | Windows Update setting | Office app: File > Account |
|---|---|---|
| Where the control lives | Windows Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options (Windows 11) or Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced options (Windows 10) | Inside an Office app: File > Account, or Office Account in classic Outlook |
| What it does | Lets Office updates arrive when Windows Update runs | Checks for and installs an Office update on demand |
| Managed devices | Group Policy or Cloud Update decides; the setting may not change behavior | May be absent if the installation is volume licensed or policy manages updates |
| Best for | Keeping Office current with routine Windows maintenance | Checking now, or confirming the current version |
Neither route is established as always better. Use the Windows setting for routine maintenance and the Office app when you need an immediate check.
Confirm that updates are arriving
After running either route, open an Office app and look at the version details under File > Account > Product Information. Compare the build with what you expected, and if it has not changed after a full Windows Update cycle on a personal PC, repeat the Office app check before assuming a fault.
