To install an official Android update, open Settings > System > Software updates and follow the tablet’s prompts. If you mean replacing the system with a custom ROM, first confirm that the exact tablet model and variant are supported: there is no safe, universal flashing method, and unlocking or flashing can erase data or stop the tablet from working.
Choose the right installation path

For most owners, the official update route is the right first step. A missing update is not a reason to install a generic Android image: it does not establish that any particular build is safe or compatible with the tablet.

Check for an official Android update
- Prepare the tablet. Connect to Wi-Fi and charge it to at least 75%, as Google recommends before an update.
- Open the update screen. In Settings, go to System > Software updates, check for updates, and follow the on-screen instructions if one is offered. Menu wording and placement can differ by manufacturer and Android version.
- Check the tablet’s software details. In Settings, open About tablet to find details such as the Android version, security update status, Google Play system status, and build number. These help identify what is installed when you contact support.
- If no update appears, check the exact model’s support information. Google advises owners of non-Pixel devices to contact the manufacturer or carrier for update timing. A tablet may not be eligible for a newer Android release.
An update offered through the tablet’s supported process is different from manually flashing an operating-system image. Do not use an image intended for another model or variant just because its Android version looks right.
What to verify before installing a custom OS
Manual installation is specific to the exact device. Android’s Generic System Image documentation does not provide one universal flashing procedure for all devices; it directs users to manufacturer instructions. A custom-ROM project’s instructions for the exact tablet and variant should be the authority for prerequisites and installation order.

- Record the manufacturer, full model number, region or carrier variant, current Android version, and build number.
- Confirm that the ROM supports that exact model and variant—not merely a similarly named tablet.
- Check the project’s stated requirements for stock firmware, bootloader state, recovery, partition layout, and installation sequence.
- Confirm the manufacturer permits bootloader unlocking for the device and follow the device-specific instructions.
- Use only the image and tools specified for that tablet. Android Flash Tool supports only listed devices and is intended for prebuilt builds; Fastboot is a low-level tool, not proof that an image is compatible.
LineageOS warns that using the wrong firmware can cause installation failure, unexpected crashes, or permanent damage. If there is no clear, current procedure for the exact variant, do not improvise with a procedure for another tablet.
Back up before unlocking or flashing
Assume that personal data can be erased. Android’s documented bootloader-unlock process warns users and performs a factory data reset, and Google’s Fastboot documentation also notes that unlocking erases data. Back up photos, downloads, app data, and anything else you cannot replace before proceeding; do not treat an unlock as a reversible change without consequences.

Understand the security and compatibility trade-offs
Most Android devices ship with a locked bootloader. Android Open Source Project documentation explains that, by default, a locked bootloader prevents users from flashing the bootloader or device partitions. On supported devices, unlocking allows modified software to be installed, but it changes the security posture: Verified Boot uses the device’s trusted root of trust to verify software on a locked device, while an unlocked device can boot modified software and displays a warning.

Use only the device-specific flashing procedure
If the exact model is supported and you decide to continue, follow its manufacturer or ROM-project guide from beginning to end, including any required computer connection and recovery steps. For a computer-based Fastboot process, Android’s guide connects the device to a workstation; the correct data-capable cable depends on the tablet’s port and the computer. Do not assume that a generic driver, cable, flasher, or command sequence works across tablets.
Do not relock the bootloader by guesswork after installing a custom OS. A locked state checks software against the trusted root of trust, and relocking requirements and behavior are device-specific. Follow the exact instructions for your tablet rather than trying an assumed lock command.

When the exact model matters
The tablet’s make, model number, region or carrier variant, and current firmware determine whether an update, bootloader unlock, custom build, and recovery method are available. Without those details, there is no responsible way to give a download or command sequence. Use the manufacturer’s support information for official updates and the ROM project’s exact-device guide for custom installation.
