Run only the test that owns the screenshot, then enable snapshot updates. For example: npx playwright test tests/example.spec.ts -g "updates the profile screenshot" --update-snapshots. Replace the file path and title pattern with your project’s values. This scopes the run to a test, not to an individual screenshot assertion within that test.
Update snapshots for one test
- Find the test file and exact test title containing the
toHaveScreenshot()assertion. - Run that file and filter by a distinctive part of the test title, adding
--update-snapshots:npx playwright test tests/example.spec.ts -g "updates the profile screenshot" --update-snapshotsAs an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Check which projects or browsers the command runs, then review the image diffs and changed snapshot files.
- Keep only baseline changes that match the intended UI change, and commit those files.

--update-snapshots (or -u) accepts the modes all, changed, missing, and none. If you provide the flag without a mode, Playwright uses changed, which updates snapshots that differ. Avoid --update-snapshots=all when you want to limit changes: it regenerates all snapshots in the selected run.

A selected test can contain more than one screenshot assertion. Playwright’s CLI selection is at test granularity; it does not document a switch for choosing a single toHaveScreenshot() call inside a test. Inspect every changed baseline produced by the run rather than assuming only one file changed.
Check project and snapshot-file scope
In a multi-project setup, confirm which projects and browsers are included in the run. Snapshot names can contain browser and platform identifiers; in a multi-project configuration, the project name may be used instead of the browser name. Configuration templates can also control snapshot paths. Check the resulting file paths and diffs before accepting changes. See Visual comparisons and the TestConfig API.

Keep the rendering environment consistent
Screenshot output can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends running tests in the same environment that produced the baseline. If a snapshot changes unexpectedly, first compare the current run’s environment with the baseline-generation environment, then review the image diff before updating or committing it.

Troubleshoot unexpected snapshot updates
- More tests ran than intended: make the file path more specific and use a distinctive title pattern with
-g. Check project configuration for additional projects included in the run. - Several snapshot files changed: the selected test may contain multiple screenshot assertions, or the run may cover multiple projects or browsers. Review each changed file and its image diff.
- Every snapshot was regenerated: check that you did not use
--update-snapshots=all. Omit the mode or usechangedfor the usual narrow update behavior. - A snapshot changes without an intended UI change: check the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode against the baseline environment.
- The baseline file is not where expected: inspect project names and snapshot-path configuration; multi-project naming and configured templates can affect the path.
