On a Windows PC, open Norton device security, select Security > LiveUpdate, then choose Update Now or Check Now. Run LiveUpdate again until Norton confirms that it has the latest protection updates. On a Mac, use LiveUpdate as well; on Android and iPhone or iPad, update Norton through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
Update Norton on Windows
- Open Norton device security.
- In the left pane, select Security.
- Open the LiveUpdate tile.
- In the Norton LiveUpdate window, select Update Now or Check Now.
- Wait for the update to finish. Run LiveUpdate again until Norton displays “Your Norton product has the latest protection updates.”
To check when definitions were last received, open LiveUpdate’s Check for Updates tab and review the last-updated date. Norton recommends running an update if that date is more than a day or two old. Norton’s current update instructions describe LiveUpdate as the route for installing available security updates.

Check automatic updates
Norton normally uses LiveUpdate to download and install definition and program updates regularly. To check the setting in Windows, open Security > LiveUpdate > Open > Settings and enable automatic updating for virus definitions and the Norton application. Labels can vary by product version, so follow the closest matching in-app setting if the wording differs. Norton’s instructions for automatic LiveUpdate provide the vendor’s current guidance.

Mac
Use Norton’s LiveUpdate feature to obtain available updates. Norton distinguishes routine threat-definition updates from an upgrade to a new application version. If Norton offers a major-version upgrade, follow the current in-app prompt; an older Mac manual describes a separate upgrade process, so its exact interface may no longer match current versions. Android
- Open the Google Play Store and search for the Norton app.
- Tap Update if the option is available.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the App Store and tap your profile icon.
- Find Norton and tap Update if it is listed.
The app-store update control appears only when a newer Norton app version is available. Norton’s mobile-app instructions describe the available update option.
What LiveUpdate updates—and what it does not
LiveUpdate can install both virus definitions and Norton program updates. A routine update is not necessarily an upgrade to an entirely new major application version; Norton may offer that separately when a new version is available. For the current upgrade workflow, rely on Norton’s in-app notification rather than assuming the older Mac manual’s steps apply to every product.

If Norton LiveUpdate fails
Work through these checks, then try LiveUpdate again:

- Confirm the device has a working internet connection.
- If Norton was just installed, allow extra time for the first update to complete.
- Free disk space if the device is low on storage.
- Check that the computer’s date and time are correct.
- Review Norton Firewall traffic permissions and parental-application settings that could block the update.
- Check proxy settings if the device uses a proxy.
- If those checks do not help, Norton says a service outage can prevent LiveUpdate; check Norton service status and retry later.

Subscription and Windows compatibility checks
Norton says security updates are available while the subscription is active. If Norton reports that the subscription has expired, the device may not be protected from emerging threats; an update attempt is not a substitute for resolving the subscription status.
Windows support also depends on the operating-system version and Norton product. Norton’s compatibility information distinguishes newer product updates from malware-definition and compatibility updates on legacy systems. Check the current compatibility listing for the exact Windows version and Norton edition before assuming that every feature or application upgrade is supported.
