Why updating Jellyfin on Windows matters
Jellyfin updates frequently include changes that can affect your database schema and plugin ecosystem. If you run an older server, you may hit issues like playback quirks, scraper problems, or failing plugin updates after the server version drifts too far.

Before you update: prerequisites and safe backups
Check what you have installed
- Confirm you’re updating the Jellyfin Server (web app), not only a client like Jellyfin Media Player.
- Open Jellyfin in your browser, then go to Dashboard > About to see the current version.
Know where your important data lives
Typical Windows install locations:
- Config:
C:\ProgramData\Jellyfin - Media: wherever you configured it (common examples include
D:\Mediaor similar) - Logs: under
C:\ProgramData\Jellyfin\log(path can vary by version)
Back up anything you care about—especially C:\ProgramData\Jellyfin.
Stop the server (optional but recommended)
If you want the safest “least surprise” upgrade, stop the Windows service first. You can restart after the installer finishes.
Create a quick backup
- Close Jellyfin in the browser.
- Stop the Jellyfin service (see the next section).
- Copy
C:\ProgramData\Jellyfinto a dated folder likeC:\ProgramData\Jellyfin-backup-2026-05-10. - Also back up your Jellyfin export (if you use it) from Dashboard > Configuration > Import/Export (availability depends on version).
This backup step matters most if a migration fails or you decide to roll back.

Method 1: Update using the official Windows installer (recommended)
This is the most common approach for Jellyfin Server on Windows. The installer typically preserves your config and media libraries while applying the new server binaries.
Step-by-step
- Find the latest Jellyfin server release for Windows.
- Use the official Jellyfin release page (commonly hosted on GitHub Releases). Download the Windows x64 installer, usually named like
Jellyfin-version-x64.exe.
- Use the official Jellyfin release page (commonly hosted on GitHub Releases). Download the Windows x64 installer, usually named like
- Download the installer and verify it completes successfully (no partial download).
- Close Jellyfin in your browser.
- Double-click the downloaded
.exeand allow it to make changes (Windows prompt). - When prompted, choose the default options unless you have a specific reason to change them.
- The installer typically keeps your existing config under
C:\ProgramData\Jellyfin.
- The installer typically keeps your existing config under
- Finish the installer and let it start (or start it afterward if it doesn’t).
- Open
http://localhost:8096(or your Jellyfin host/IP) to confirm the server is reachable.
What you should expect during the first startup
After upgrading, Jellyfin may perform database migrations. If you have a large library, that can take longer than you expect. Don’t restart repeatedly—wait, then check logs if it looks stuck.

Method 2: Update when Jellyfin is installed as a Windows service
Many Windows installs register Jellyfin as a service (name commonly “Jellyfin Server”). Stopping it before the update can prevent file locks and reduce edge-case failures.
Stop and start the service
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, press Enter. - Find Jellyfin Server.
- Right-click > Stop.
- Run the installer update (Method 1).
- Right-click > Start.
If the service won’t start after updating, go directly to the troubleshooting section and inspect log output.

If you can’t stop the service (rare, but it happens), run the installer anyway and then restart the service once the installer finishes. However, the “stop first” approach is still the safest choice.
Method 3: Update Jellyfin using Docker on Windows
If your Jellyfin runs via Docker (for example, using Docker Desktop), you typically update by pulling a newer image and restarting the container. This often avoids messing with Windows services directly.
Update steps (Docker Desktop / Docker Engine)
- Open Docker Desktop.
- Confirm your Jellyfin container name (for example,
jellyfin):- Run:
docker ps
- Run:
- Pull the latest Jellyfin image:
- Run:
docker pull jellyfin/jellyfin
- Run:
- Stop and remove the old container:
- Run:
docker stop jellyfin - Run:
docker rm jellyfin
- Run:
- Start a new container using the same volumes/ports.
- Example (adjust paths and ports to match your existing setup):
Example command (commonly used pattern):
docker run -d --name jellyfin \ -p 8096:8096 -p 8920:8920 \ -v C:\\ProgramData\\Jellyfin:/config \ -v D:\\Media:/media \ jellyfin/jellyfin
How to verify the update worked
Verification is simple, but don’t skip it. A successful installer doesn’t guarantee your server fully migrated the database.

Confirm the version number
- Go to Dashboard > About and confirm the Jellyfin version matches the release you installed.
- If you use plugins, check Dashboard > Plugins to ensure plugin statuses look healthy.
Confirm service health
- Load
http://localhost:8096(or your remote URL). - Make sure you can browse libraries and play a short file.
- Check Dashboard > Logs for any obvious startup errors.
Check logs if it doesn’t look right
On Windows, inspect logs under C:\ProgramData\Jellyfin\log (or the version-specific equivalent). Look for database migration errors, permission errors, or plugin load failures.

Troubleshooting common update problems
Problem: Jellyfin won’t start after updating
Common causes: permission changes, corrupted config, incompatible plugin, or a failed database migration.
What to try:
- Check Windows service status in
services.msc. - Open Jellyfin logs in
C:\ProgramData\Jellyfin\log. - Look specifically for lines that mention database migrations, configuration parsing, or plugin loading.
- If a plugin is the suspected culprit, temporarily disable it by moving the plugin files out of the plugin directory (keep a copy).
Problem: Database migration appears stuck
Migrations can take time, especially with large libraries and heavy metadata caches. “Stuck” is only real after you confirm logs aren’t progressing.
- Wait and periodically refresh the Jellyfin web page (don’t hard-restart the service every minute).
- Check logs for repeated migration checkpoints rather than silence.
- If the server has been idle for an unusually long period (hours) and logs show errors, stop the service and review the migration-related error text.
Problem: Update completes, but libraries disappear or won’t scan
Usually this is a path or permission mismatch.
- Verify your media paths in Jellyfin settings match what you actually have.
- Ensure the Jellyfin service account has access to those folders (NTFS permissions matter).
- Confirm that your
/configdirectory wasn’t replaced or lost (Windows:C:\ProgramData\Jellyfin; Docker: your bound/configvolume).
Problem: Port conflict (8096/8920) after update
If another application started using port 8096 or 8920, Jellyfin may fail to bind.
- Check if port 8096 is in use (for example, via Resource Monitor or PowerShell).
- Stop the conflicting service/app.
- Restart Jellyfin.
Once it’s running, consider adjusting Jellyfin ports in its settings if conflicts are recurring.

- Watch Live TV and recorded shows from your Jellyfin server (additional hardware/services required)
- Stream your media to your device
- View your collection in an easy to use interface
Problem: Plugins break after the upgrade
Plugin compatibility can lag behind server updates. If a plugin fails during startup, Jellyfin might still run but with missing features—or it might log repeated plugin errors.
- Update plugins to versions compatible with your new Jellyfin version.
- If you must regain stability quickly, disable the problematic plugin and confirm Jellyfin runs normally.
Rollback and recovery options
Rolling back is often easiest when you kept a backup of C:\ProgramData\Jellyfin before the upgrade.
Safe rollback approach
- Stop the Jellyfin service.
- Restore your config from your dated backup folder.
- Install the previous Jellyfin server version (download the older Windows release installer).
- Start the service and verify it loads.
Heads up: if a migration partially changed the database, restoring config may not fully revert database schema changes. In that case, check logs and consider restoring the database as part of your backup (some installations keep a database file inside the config folder).

FAQ
Where do I find the latest Jellyfin Windows installer?
Use the official Jellyfin release page (commonly hosted on GitHub Releases) and download the Windows x64 installer. Choose the server package, not a media player client build.
Will updating Jellyfin delete my libraries?
Normally, updating Jellyfin preserves your config and libraries, including media library definitions. Your media files remain where they are; the risk is usually misconfiguration or permissions, not deletion. That’s why backing up C:\ProgramData\Jellyfin matters.

Do I need to update Jellyfin plugins right after the server update?
If plugins rely on server APIs that changed, they may fail until updated. Check Dashboard > Plugins after your server update and update plugins to versions compatible with your Jellyfin version.
Can I update Jellyfin without downtime?
Not reliably. Most updates require restarting the server, and database migrations can extend downtime. If you need near-zero downtime, consider scheduling an update during off-hours and verifying migrations finish before bringing services back for clients.
Bottom Line
To update Jellyfin on Windows safely, back up C:\ProgramData\Jellyfin, install the latest Windows x64 server release, and give the first startup enough time to complete database migrations.
If anything fails, logs and service status are your fastest path to the fix—most issues resolve by correcting permissions, disabling a broken plugin, or rolling back using your pre-update backup.
