How to Update Google Chrome Safely and Check That You’re on the Latest Version

Use Chrome’s built-in updater on Windows or Mac, the official store or system updater on other devices, and verify the update on the About page or in the relevant store.

To update Chrome safely, use its built-in updater on Windows or Mac, your device’s official app or operating-system updater on other platforms, and then confirm the update in Chrome or the relevant store. On a computer, open More > Help > About Google Chrome: Chrome checks for updates there, and you can select Relaunch if one is ready.

Update Chrome on a Windows PC or Mac

  1. Open Chrome and select More (the three-dot menu).
  2. Choose Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates and displays the installed version on this page.
  3. If an update is available, select Relaunch to apply it. Chrome says it saves open tabs and windows and reopens them after restarting; Incognito windows do not reopen.

Chrome normally updates in the background after you close and reopen the browser. On Windows and macOS, GoogleUpdater regularly checks for and installs available updates; Google describes it as a service that helps keep Chrome up to date. See Google’s explanation of how Chrome updates work.

Use the right update method for your device

Device Where to update How to confirm
Windows or Mac Chrome: More > Help > About Google Chrome Check the version on the About page; select Relaunch if offered.
Linux Your Linux distribution’s package manager Confirm the package manager reports the Chrome update installed.
Chromebook Update ChromeOS Check that the ChromeOS update completes.
Android Google Play Store: profile icon > Manage apps & device > Chrome > Update Check that the Play Store update completes.
iPhone or iPad Apple App Store: profile > available updates > Chrome > Update Check that the App Store update completes.

For Google’s step-by-step mobile instructions, see Chrome updates on Android and Chrome updates on iPhone and iPad. Google’s current help page lists Android 10 and later and iOS 17 and later as supported for the respective instructions. Store settings may allow mobile updates to happen automatically.

Check whether Chrome is up to date

On Windows or Mac, return to More > Help > About Google Chrome. The page shows the installed version and checks for updates when opened. If Relaunch appears, select it and check the About page again after Chrome restarts. Google Chrome Help says, “If you can’t find the ‘Relaunch’ option, you’re on the latest version.” See Google’s computer update instructions.

  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

There is no single version number that serves as a reliable evergreen target across every platform, channel, and rollout. Check the version in your own browser or device’s official store when you update rather than comparing it with a number published elsewhere.

Use Safety Check as an extra check

On desktop, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Safety Check. Google says Safety Check can surface available updates as well as other security and privacy issues. To see Chrome’s explicit version number and update status, use the About page. See Google’s Safety Check guidance.

Keep the update process safe

  • Use Chrome’s built-in updater, Google Play, Apple’s App Store, your Linux package manager, or ChromeOS update process as appropriate. Avoid third-party sites offering Chrome update downloads.
  • Make sure your operating system is supported. Google’s requirements can change; check the current Chrome computer update and system requirements page before troubleshooting an older device.
  • If an update does not appear or complete, first confirm that you are using the right platform-specific update route and a supported operating system. Google’s cited instructions do not identify one universal fix for every stalled update, so avoid unverified cache, registry, or reinstall steps.

Choose the Stable channel for everyday use

Google describes Stable as fully tested and suitable for most users. Beta and Dev are preview or testing channels, and Google describes Dev as not completely stable. Canary is intended for testing and is unstable for everyday use. Organizations may manage channels, including Extended Stable, but that is an administrator decision rather than the default choice for consumers. See Google’s Chrome release-channel guidance.
