For a .es domain, changing the registered owner (registrant) follows a different process from editing administrative or technical contacts. Registrant changes go through nic.es, while administrative and technical contact details can be changed in hPanel. Use the workflow below to avoid treating an owner change as an ordinary contact edit.
First identify which contact you need to change
The registrant is the domain’s owner. The .es-specific instructions say registrant details must be changed through nic.es; administrative and technical contact details can be changed in hPanel. Editing an administrative contact does not change the registered owner. For an owner change, follow the separate registry workflow described here rather than the standard registrant-edit flow in hPanel.

If the domain owner is staying the same and you only need to update administrative or technical contact details, those can be changed in hPanel. Use the domain’s contact or ownership area and update the relevant contact profile. Do not use this route as a substitute for changing the registrant.

Change the registrant through nic.es
1. Prepare the new contact and ESNIC handle
- In hPanel, create the new contact profile as directed in the .es domain instructions.
- Contact Customer Success to request the ESNIC handle needed for the registrant request. Handle generation may take 24–48 hours. The instructions caution against using a handle generated outside the provider.
2. Submit the request in nic.es
- Sign in to your nic.es account using the NIC identifier and password. You can look up the identifier by searching for the domain on dominios.es; use the password-recovery option if you cannot access the account.
- Open Domain Transfer Request and enter the domain name.
- Enter the new registrant details using the ESNIC/NIC identifiers supplied through the provider. The instructions say an individual may use the same identifier for both contacts and that the ACP contact cannot be a corporation. Treat these as procedural directions, not independently confirmed registry policy.
- Complete identity verification in the nic.es flow. This may involve signing with an electronic DNI or certificate, or uploading a photocopy of a national identity document or other supporting document. The instructions state an upload limit of 4 MB.
Submit identity documents only through the official nic.es submission flow and as directed by customer support; do not send or publish them through unrelated channels.
3. Confirm the request and keep the registrar selection
The current domain owner must verify the request within 10 days or it is automatically canceled. The new owner and administrative contact receive an email to confirm. During the nic.es confirmation flow, select REGISTRAR.EU as the accredited registrar. Choosing another option may move the domain out of the current provider’s management and into registry management.

4. Notify the provider and check the result
- When nic.es shows the request as successful and pending review, notify customer support and provide a screenshot or other proof of the request.
- Wait for the registry review. It typically takes 5–7 days; this is an estimate, not a guaranteed registry deadline.
- After approval, check whether the registrant identifier has updated. If the panel still does not reflect the new registrant details, contact support so it can synchronize the information.
Where this process can go wrong
- Only the admin contact changed: That does not make the new person the registered owner. Confirm that the request was submitted as a registrant change in nic.es.
- The request expired: The current owner must verify within 10 days. If it is canceled, start a new request and complete the confirmation promptly.
- The wrong accredited registrar was selected: Select REGISTRAR.EU to keep the domain under the current provider’s management. Contact support if you selected another option.
- The panel has not caught up: Once nic.es approves the request, ask support to synchronize its records if the registrant details remain outdated.
