Choose the update route for your Dell PC

Check Dell’s compatibility information for your exact model before using an automated utility. Dell Command | Update is described as a standalone application for commercial client computers, not a universal replacement for every Dell consumer PC.

Download and install a driver from Dell
- Open Dell Drivers & Downloads.
- Identify the computer by entering its Service Tag, or select it from the product catalog. Confirm that the displayed product matches your PC.
- Choose the Windows operating system installed on that computer. Use the driver category or a keyword search to locate the needed package.
- Open the package details and check that it applies to your model and operating system. Download it, then run the downloaded installer and follow its prompts.
- Restart if the installer requests it. If the device still does not work, confirm that you selected the correct model, operating system, and driver before trying another package.
Dell’s Drivers and Downloads FAQ also describes an automatic “Check for Updates” option. Prefer drivers and software developed by Dell or obtained from a trusted source; Dell warns that unknown third-party packages can cause device or system problems.

Use Dell Command | Update only on a supported system
If Dell lists your computer as compatible, Command | Update can scan for applicable Dell updates instead of requiring you to search for each package. Dell’s product information and how-to guide describe this workflow:

- Install and open Dell Command | Update for your supported computer.
- Run the update check and review the results.
- Select the recommended updates you want to install, then start installation.
- Allow required restarts to complete. Review update history afterward if you need to confirm what was installed.
The updates offered depend on the computer. Do not assume that the utility is supported on every Dell consumer, gaming, or older system; verify compatibility for the exact model.
What Windows Update can—and cannot—replace
Windows Update provides Windows feature updates and security patches and often supplies essential driver updates. To check, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. For a missing driver or a package specific to your Dell model, use Dell Drivers & Downloads rather than assuming Windows Update has every Dell package. Do not rely on the discontinued Dell Update utilities
Dell says support for Dell Update and Alienware Update ended on December 31, 2024. Its overview, last modified May 3, 2026, points readers to SupportAssist. Manual downloads remain available through Dell Drivers & Downloads, while Dell Command | Update is an option for supported commercial systems.

BIOS and firmware procedures vary by Dell model. Find the BIOS or firmware package for your exact computer in Dell Drivers & Downloads, then follow Dell’s current BIOS and UEFI update guide for that system. The guide also covers BIOSConnect, which can update firmware over the air. Do not treat one model’s steps as a universal procedure.

After reinstalling Windows: an optional driver-recovery route
A USB drive is not required for routine online driver updates. In the narrower case of a Windows reinstallation, Dell’s Advanced Driver Restore instructions describe staging the system-specific driver CAB on a USB drive or another location. The CAB can help establish device IDs before you run an update check.
