After updating, test the site that prompted you, and if it fails, change Shields for that site only before changing global protection.
What a Brave Shields update actually changes
Brave Shields uses filter lists to block advertising, trackers and other unwanted page resources. The Update lists command downloads the latest versions of the lists already managed by Brave. It does not update the Brave app itself, change your operating system, or install a new browser build.

Keep those two maintenance tasks separate. A filter-list refresh changes blocking rules inside your current Brave installation. Updating the application requires Brave’s normal browser-update mechanism, which is a different workflow from the one described here.

Brave’s official filter-list instructions do not say that every list update requires restarting the browser. If a page still behaves oddly after the update, refresh that page first; restart Brave only as a general troubleshooting step, not as a documented requirement.

Labels and capitalization can vary slightly by release. The Brave Help Center article covering this control was updated April 29, 2025, so compare the wording with the current app if your menus look different.
Before you refresh the lists
A safe update takes only a few minutes, but a little preparation makes it easier to identify the cause if a page changes.
- Identify the device. Use the path for desktop, iOS or Android rather than assuming the desktop layout appears on mobile.
- Note any custom rules. If you have entered rules under Custom Filters, record what you changed and which site it was intended to fix. This gives you a clear first suspect if one element disappears after an update.
- Record the affected page. Keep the tab, URL and the specific symptom visible: a blank video, missing login button, endless loading or an incorrectly styled page is more useful than a general impression that “the site broke.”
- Understand the scope. Updating lists changes the rules used across sites. It does not automatically create a per-site exception for the page you are viewing.
- Use a connection that can complete the download. On a metered or unreliable connection, wait until the device can remain online long enough for Brave to finish applying the lists.
How to update Brave filter lists on desktop
- Open Brave’s main menu and choose Settings.
- Select Shields in the settings sidebar.
- Open Content filtering.
- Choose Update lists. Brave retrieves the current versions of its enabled filter lists and applies them to browsing.
- Return to the tab that prompted the update and reload it. Then check another site you use regularly so you can distinguish a site-specific problem from a broader change.
You can go directly to the same desktop page by entering brave://settings/shields/filters in the address bar. The internal address is a shortcut to Brave’s settings screen; it is not a separate update service.
How to update lists on iPhone and iPad
- Open Brave and open Settings.
- Choose Shields & Privacy.
- Open Content Filtering.
- Tap Update Lists.
- Return to the affected tab and reload the page. Check the page’s key functions, such as sign-in, search, checkout or video playback, rather than only checking whether it visually loads.
The iOS menu uses title-style capitalization, so it may appear as “Update Lists” rather than the sentence-case label used on desktop.

How to update lists on Android
- Open Brave and tap the menu button, then open Settings.
- Choose Brave Shields & privacy.
- Open Content filtering.
- Tap UPDATE in the top-right corner.
- Reload the page that led you to update and test its important controls. Also open at least one familiar site to see whether the behavior is isolated.
Android places the command in the top-right of the Content filtering screen. If you do not see it, confirm that you are in Brave’s Shields settings rather than Android’s system app-update screen.
How to verify the result without weakening protection
Brave does not publish a required test protocol for a list refresh. A practical check is to revisit the triggering page and a few sites you know well:
- Reload the original page and repeat the action that failed.
- Check interactive elements, not only the page’s appearance.
- Open a second, unrelated site to see whether the change is general.
- Look for a new failure immediately after the update, such as missing scripts, broken media or an account form that will not submit.
If everything works, leave the default Shields behavior in place. There is no benefit in turning off blocking globally just because you refreshed the lists.
What to do when one website breaks
Brave acknowledges that Shields can occasionally interfere with sites. Its recommended design includes controls for individual sites, so start with a targeted exception instead of changing the protection level for every website.

Open the site-specific Shields panel
- Stay on the website that is malfunctioning.
- Click or tap the Shields lion icon in the address bar.
- Review the controls shown for that domain.
- Make the smallest change that addresses the symptom, then reload the page.
- Test the same function again. If it still fails, undo the change before trying a different, narrowly scoped setting.
Site-specific settings can differ from global defaults. That lets you accommodate one site without removing protection from unrelated sites.
Targeted adjustment versus a global change

Use the global route only when the evidence points to a global cause. Brave’s general Shields guidance warns that more restrictive choices, including blocking JavaScript or all cookies, can break sites. Raising restrictions is therefore a poor first response to a single broken page.
Custom CSS filters: find and remove a rule that hides content
A custom CSS content filter can hide a page element even when the rest of the site works. Brave documents a removal workflow in its Custom Filters guidance, which is labeled a work in progress and was last updated July 18, 2023.

- Find the Custom Filters section.
- Inspect entries that target the affected domain or the missing element.
- Remove the suspect entry.
- Save the change.
- Refresh the affected page and check the element again.
Remove only the rule connected to the symptom. Deleting every custom rule makes it harder to determine which one caused the problem and may discard deliberate layout or privacy choices.

Understanding third-party filter-rule compatibility
Brave says it is “broadly compatible with uBlock Origin’s filter rule syntax.” That is a compatibility statement, not a promise that every third-party rule behaves identically in Brave.
Differences can occur when a rule depends on syntax or behavior that Brave’s filtering engine handles differently. Brave says compatibility differences are treated as bugs and recorded in its adblock-rust project. If a rule fails, verify that the rule itself is responsible before adding more exceptions or disabling Shields globally.
- Test the rule on the intended domain.
- Check whether removing only that rule restores the missing content.
- Keep a record of custom entries so you can reverse a change.
- Avoid assuming that a list written for another blocker has been tested on every Brave platform.
Common mistakes and safer fixes
Confusing list updates with browser updates
The Update lists button refreshes filtering data. It does not install a new Brave version. If you need security fixes or new browser features, use Brave’s application-update mechanism separately.

Changing every site to fix one page
Turning off Shields globally can hide the real cause and changes your privacy posture on all sites. Open the lion panel on the failing domain first.
Assuming a visual change means the update failed
Ad and tracker blocking can alter page spacing or remove empty ad containers. Judge the result by the function you need—logging in, reading, playing media or completing a transaction—not by whether every former placeholder remains.
Removing all custom filters at once
Bulk deletion eliminates useful personal rules and prevents a clean diagnosis. Remove one suspect entry, save, reload and retest.
Expecting a documented rollback button
The available Brave guidance does not document a filter-list backup or rollback procedure. Do not promise that an earlier list version can be restored from the interface. If a newly updated rule causes a problem, use the affected site’s Shields controls or remove the specific custom rule while you investigate.

A repeatable maintenance routine
- Update lists from the platform’s official Content filtering screen.
- Reload the page that motivated the update.
- Test its critical function and one unrelated, familiar site.
- If one domain fails, open its Shields panel and make the narrowest adjustment available.
- If a custom CSS rule is implicated, remove that entry under Custom Filters, save and refresh.
- Record what you changed and whether the site recovered.
- Restore stronger defaults after testing whenever the site works without the exception.
This process keeps list maintenance separate from compatibility troubleshooting and limits any reduction in protection to the site that actually needs it.

- Brave provides per-site Shields controls because settings can sometimes break websites.
- Its compatibility claim for uBlock Origin syntax is broad rather than universal.

- The cited guidance does not provide a list backup or rollback procedure, a mandatory restart instruction, an update interval, a filter-list size, a protection percentage or a measured performance effect.
Those limits matter when deciding what an update can prove. A successful refresh confirms that Brave applied current lists; it does not guarantee that every third-party rule or every website will behave identically afterward.
