There is no single Bose firmware-updater process. Smart speakers and soundbars normally update in the Bose app, some older SoundLink models use Bose Connect or Bose Updater, and L1 Pro-family products require Bose Updater with USB-C. SoundTouch is the critical exception: Bose ended its cloud service on May 6, 2026, so new SoundTouch firmware updates are no longer available.
Identify the exact model and generation first, then use the matching procedure below.
1. Identify your Bose speaker before updating
“SoundLink,” “Home Speaker,” and “SoundTouch” describe product families, not always one exact device. Find the model name and generation on the rear or underside label, in the original documentation, or in the Bose app or Bose Connect app. A model-specific support page is essential because update files, reboot commands, cable requirements, and version menus differ.
2. Choose the correct update route
| Product type | Likely method | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bose smart speakers and smart soundbars | Bose app | The product must be supported by the app and normally connected to Wi-Fi. See the current list at Bose’s Bose app page. |
| Older SoundLink models | Bose Connect or Bose Updater | The exact model determines the route. SoundLink Revolve instructions are at Bose support. |
| SoundTouch systems | No new firmware route | Cloud support ended May 6, 2026. Existing local functions may remain, but firmware and security updates are no longer delivered. |
| L1 Pro8, L1 Pro16, L1 Pro32, Sub1 and Sub2 | Bose Updater with USB-C | Use btu.bose.com on a compatible computer. L1 Pro instructions specifically exclude Thunderbolt 3 cables. |
| Other legacy or home-theater products | Product-specific Bose support or USB procedure | Never use a firmware file intended for another model. |
3. Prepare safely
- Plug the speaker into power. For a battery model, keep external power connected for the entire installation.
- Use a stable Wi-Fi network for app updates. Keep the phone, computer, speaker and router close enough for a reliable connection.
- Have a data-capable USB cable when the model requires computer updating; a charge-only cable may not be detected.
- Save downloaded firmware exactly as Bose provides it. If the model instructions say not to rename, open or unzip the file, do not do so.
- Do not switch networks, close the updater, remove the cable or cut power while installation is running. The speaker may reboot and show a temporary light pattern.
Update time depends on the model, file size and connection. Bose says a SoundTouch 10 app update could take up to 20 minutes per system, while its USB-drive procedure typically took less than five minutes; those figures are not universal guarantees.

4. Update a supported smart speaker in the Bose app
Bose’s portable-smart-speaker instructions are at this support page. Labels vary by model and app version, but the normal workflow is:
- Install or update the Bose app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
- Open the app and sign in if requested.
- Add the speaker if it is not already listed.
- Confirm the speaker and phone use the same Wi-Fi network.
- Select the speaker and look for an update notification or software-update control.
- Start the update, leave the speaker on power, and wait for installation and the automatic restart.
- Reopen the app and confirm that the speaker responds.
If the expected control is missing, do not assume the speaker is defective. Check the exact model’s Bose support page; some products use a different app or a computer updater.
5. Update with Bose Updater
Older SoundLink products
- On a computer, open https://btu.bose.com.
- Follow the prompts to launch or download Bose Updater and install it if requested.
- Connect the SoundLink speaker as instructed by the updater.
- Follow the on-screen update steps and leave the speaker connected until completion.
Bose lists Windows 10, Windows 11 and the latest two macOS versions for the SoundLink Revolve updater. Browser requirements are product-specific, so do not generalize those requirements to every SoundLink model.
L1 Pro, Sub1 and Sub2
- Open btu.bose.com and download Bose Updater.
- Accept the end-user license agreement, install and open the updater.
- Power the Bose product and connect it to the computer with a USB-C cable.
- Wait for the updater to identify the product, then follow its firmware instructions.
- Keep power and USB connected until the updater confirms completion, then restart or reconnect the product.
The L1 Pro guide supports Chrome, Firefox and Edge on Windows and Chrome and Firefox on Mac; Safari and Internet Explorer are not compatible with those instructions. Bose also states that L1 Pro systems are not compatible with Thunderbolt 3 cables. See the official guide at Bose’s L1 Pro firmware PDF.

6. Computer, browser and direct-IP fallbacks for supported smart products
USB browser updater
For the Portable Smart Speaker, Bose supplies the model-specific package at https://worldwide.bose.com/support/PHSFW. Follow the product page if it specifies this route:
- Download the package and leave it unopened or unzipped if Bose says that is required.
- Power the speaker and connect it to the computer with a compatible USB cable. A USB-A-to-USB-C cable may be needed on computers without USB-C.
- Open the specified Bose updater interface, select Choose File, choose the package, then select Upload.
- Wait for both file transfer and installation to finish. Disconnect only after the speaker reboots and its status light returns to normal.
Direct-IP updater
This is a model-specific fallback, not a universal Bose feature. For products whose instructions support it:
- Download the exact model’s package without renaming or unzipping it.
- Perform the model’s reboot command. For the Portable Smart Speaker, Bose says to hold Play/Pause for 10 seconds.
- Find the speaker’s current IP address after it reconnects; the router may assign a new address.
- On a computer on the same network, enter the address followed by
:17008/update.html, for example10.0.0.6:17008/update.html. - Select Choose File, select the package and choose Upload.
- Wait for the browser and the speaker’s light pattern to show that installation and reboot are complete.
Temporary Bose setup network
Some models can be updated through a temporary network. Use this only when the product’s Bose instructions require it:
- Download the exact package.
- Factory-reset the speaker only if Bose explicitly requires that step.
- On the computer, join the temporary Wi-Fi network beginning with Bose and the model name. If warned that it has no internet, remain connected.
- Open
http://203.0.113.1:17008/update.html, choose Choose File, select the package and choose Upload. - Wait for completion, then reconnect the speaker to normal Wi-Fi and set it up again if the reset erased network settings.
203.0.113.1 works only in the required local setup state; it is not a normal public website.

7. SoundTouch in 2026: firmware updates are unavailable
Bose ended SoundTouch cloud support on May 6, 2026. SoundTouch products no longer receive software, security or firmware updates because the cloud service is offline. Do not follow older guides that tell you to force a new SoundTouch firmware download.
The updated app preserves certain local capabilities, depending on model. Bluetooth, AUX, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, setup, remote control and some grouping can continue. Cloud-dependent browsing and playback of music services, presets, SoundTouch 10 stereo pairing and Alexa voice commands no longer work. Details are in Bose’s SoundTouch end-of-life notice.
8. Verify the installed version
SoundTouch
- Open the SoundTouch app.
- Open the menu and select Settings.
- Select Speaker Settings, then choose the system.
- Open the system-information or About area to view software version, IP address and MAC address.
After May 6, 2026, this is an installed-version record, not evidence that a newer cloud release exists. Bose documents the menu at this support page.
Other Bose products
Version-display controls and light patterns vary. Use the exact product support page rather than assuming that the Bose app, Bose Connect or a light sequence exposes the same information on every model.

9. Troubleshoot a missing, stalled or failed update
No update appears
- Confirm the exact model and the correct app or updater.
- The speaker may already be current, offline, on another Wi-Fi network, or outside a staged release.
- Restart the speaker and the phone or tablet, verify the same Wi-Fi network, and update or reinstall the Bose app.
- Try the official computer or browser route for that model.
- SoundTouch products cannot receive new firmware after the service shutdown.
For certain Bose app problems, Bose recommends rebooting the device running the app, resetting the product where instructed, and reinstalling the Bose app; see this Bose troubleshooting guidance.
The update stalls or fails
- Keep power connected and move the speaker nearer the router.
- Avoid guest Wi-Fi, VPNs, captive portals and unstable mobile hotspots.
- Check that the file matches the exact model and has not been renamed, unzipped or modified.
- Try a different USB port, data-capable cable or computer.
- Close duplicate updater windows and retry only when the model instructions permit it.
- For direct-IP updating, rediscover the IP address after every reboot.
- Do not repeatedly factory-reset unless Bose’s procedure calls for it.
The speaker seems dead
- Leave it connected to power for several minutes; a reboot or light sequence may be normal.
- Try the official reboot sequence for the exact model.
- Check whether the Bose app or computer still detects it and whether physical controls respond.
- Use a documented recovery method only; do not install an unofficial or another model’s file.
- If there are no lights, sound or USB recognition, contact Bose support.
A factory reset is not a guaranteed cure for a failed installation and may erase Wi-Fi settings, account association and preferences.
10. When to contact Bose
Contact Bose support when the exact model cannot be identified, the official updater cannot detect it, or documented recovery steps fail. Support availability and procedures vary by region. For multiple speakers, update each product according to its own instructions; updating one unit does not automatically update every product in a group.
Firmware, app and cloud changes are different
- Firmware/software update: changes software installed on the speaker.
- Bose app update: changes the phone or tablet application.
- SoundTouch service change: Bose’s cloud shutdown, not a new speaker firmware release.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I update a Bose speaker over Bluetooth alone?
Not necessarily. Some models require Bose Connect, a computer and USB, or Wi-Fi through the Bose app. Bluetooth by itself is not a universal firmware-update method.

Can I use another Bose model’s firmware file?
No. Use only the package supplied for the exact model and generation.
Should I factory-reset before updating?
Only when the official instructions for that model require it, such as some setup-network procedures. A reset can erase Wi-Fi and personal settings.
How long should a firmware update take?
Timing varies by model, file size and network speed. Bose’s up-to-20-minute estimate for one SoundTouch 10 app route is model-specific, not a general Bose promise.
Can SoundTouch speakers receive firmware updates in 2026?
No. Bose ended SoundTouch cloud support on May 6, 2026, so new firmware and security updates are no longer available.
What if the speaker will not turn on after updating?
Keep it on power for several minutes, try the model’s documented reboot sequence and check app or USB detection. If it remains unresponsive, contact Bose rather than using unofficial firmware.
