To update Reg-suit’s baseline, regenerate the intended screenshots in the project’s configured actualDir, run npx reg-suit run, and inspect the HTML comparison report. If the visual change is intentional, publish that run so its screenshots can serve as expected images in a later comparison. Reg-suit’s documented workflow does not include a separate “approve” or “update-baseline” command.
Update the baseline with the normal Reg-suit workflow
- Make the intended UI change and regenerate screenshots. The project supplies the screenshots to compare; save the new images in the configured
actualDir. The official README describesactualDiras the required directory containing images to test. Reg-suit README - Run the comparison workflow:
npx reg-suit run. If your project uses a local CLI invocation or package script, use that equivalent instead. - Review the HTML report. Check whether each difference reflects the intended UI change or an unintended regression.
- Publish the run with the intended screenshots. Reg-suit’s documented workflow publishes the comparison result and actual images under the current snapshot key; those published snapshots can be fetched as expected images in a subsequent run.
Do not treat “a difference was detected” as equivalent to “the test failed” or “the baseline should be accepted.” The official demo says the report is for the team to judge whether a visual difference is intended. Official Puppeteer demo

What npx reg-suit run does
The README describes run as combining sync-expected, compare, and publish -n. These stages explain why updating a baseline is a workflow rather than a standalone approval command.
Recommended Free Tools
| Stage | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
sync-expected |
Fetches existing expected images into the working directory. The configured key-generator determines the expected key, and the publisher plugin retrieves the images. | Confirm the key points to the baseline you meant to compare against and that the publisher can access it. |
compare |
Compares images in actualDir with the fetched expected images and creates an HTML report. |
Inspect the reported differences instead of accepting them automatically. |
publish |
Publishes the comparison result and actual images to external storage using the actual snapshot key from the key-generator plugin. | Ensure this is the branch/commit run whose images you intend later runs to use. |
Notifications may also be sent if configured. These command descriptions and the workflow are documented in the Reg-suit README.

Check the configuration and snapshot storage
Reg-suit expects regconfig.json in the project root. The README’s example uses core.actualDir for the input images and core.workingDir for temporary working files; it describes workingDir as optional and ordinarily ignored by Git. The example also configures a threshold rate, a Git-hash key generator, and an S3 publisher, but those are example settings rather than requirements for every project.
Expected snapshots must be retrievable through the configured publisher, and new snapshots are published through that publisher. The README lists S3 and Google Cloud Storage publisher plugins. The Puppeteer demo uses S3 for snapshots and HTML reports and shows npx reg-suit init for initial setup and npx reg-suit prepare --plugin publish-s3 to revisit plugin setup. Use these only if they match your project’s storage choice. README · Puppeteer demo

Make sure the baseline key is from the right Git history
When comparisons use Git-hash-based keys, the current branch and available commit history matter: they determine which snapshot key Reg-suit resolves as the comparison base. A detached HEAD can prevent the expected branch from being identified. In CI, check out the intended branch and make enough history available to resolve the base commit. The README’s GitHub Actions example uses fetch-depth: 0 before running Reg-suit; adapt the checkout and branch handling to your CI system. The README also documents workarounds for Travis CI, Wercker, AppVeyor, and GitLab CI. CI guidance in the README

- The report shows no expected images or comparison fails to find them: Check that
sync-expectedcan access the configured publisher, and verify the key-generator is resolving the expected baseline key. - The wrong baseline is compared: Check the current branch, commit and key-generator configuration. In CI, confirm the base branch and required Git history are present.
- CI reports detached HEAD or cannot identify a branch: Configure checkout so the job has the intended branch context. For GitHub Actions, the README example uses
fetch-depth: 0. - There is a visual difference, but you are unsure whether to update: Use the HTML report to review the changed regions. A detected difference alone does not establish whether the change is correct; decide whether it matches the intended UI update.
- The new screenshots do not appear as expected images in the next run: Confirm that the run containing the intended images completed its publish stage and that the next run resolves the corresponding snapshot key through the configured publisher.
Or skip the browser setup
If the goal is simply to capture a page for a visual reference, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. For Reg-suit, you still need to generate the screenshots in your project’s configured actualDir and use Reg-suit’s comparison and publishing workflow. ScreenshotNeo can provide a capture without setting up a browser in your script:
