Start with the lender’s name-change or servicing-transfer notice; don’t change or recreate payment instructions until you know what changed. A name update may also involve a new servicer, loan number, payment address, or online account. Check the notice’s effective date, then handle lender-managed autopay and bank bill pay separately and confirm the next payment with the new lender or servicer.
First, find out what changed
A lender’s new name alone does not establish that payment processing has changed. Read the official name-change, welcome, or servicing-transfer notice for your account. Look for the effective date, the last date the former lender accepts payments, the first payment date for the new servicer, and any instructions about existing automatic payments.

Compare the notice with your current payment setup. Check the payee, loan or account number, payment address, online-account login, and the status of any existing draft. If any detail is unclear or the notice does not say whether autopay will continue, ask the lender or servicer to confirm before changing the schedule.

Identify how your recurring payment is made
“Autopay” can describe two different arrangements. The transition may affect them differently, so identify which one you use before making changes.

| Payment method | Who controls the recurring instruction | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Lender- or servicer-managed automatic debit | The lender or servicer drafts your bank account under an authorization you gave it. | Whether the draft transferred, needs a new agreement, or requires enrollment with the new servicer. |
| Recurring payment through your bank’s bill-pay service | Your bank sends payments using the payee details you entered. | Whether the payee, loan number, or payment address must be changed in your bank’s bill-pay settings. |
Chase distinguishes third-party bill pay from a servicer-managed automatic draft and says a transfer may leave the draft in place, require a new agreement, or require new enrollment, depending on the transition. For its mortgage-transfer scenario, Chase tells borrowers who use recurring bill pay to update the payee and loan number for the new servicer: Chase Mortgage Service Transfer FAQs. That guidance describes Chase’s transfer situation, not a rule for every lender.
Update lender-managed autopay if the notice requires it
- Follow the transition notice. Check whether it says your existing draft will transfer, needs a new authorization, or must be set up again. Do not assume it will continue or stop automatically.
- Use the new account or the lender’s stated enrollment method. A servicer may provide online enrollment, a form, or another process. For example, Santander Consumer USA’s Happen Bank transition information says automatic-payment enrollment is set up after onboarding and can be reviewed or managed in MyAccount: Santander Consumer USA’s Happen Bank information.
- Confirm the scheduled draft. Sign in to the new lender or servicer account, or contact it, to check that autopay is active and that the next withdrawal date and payment amount are correct.
Cancellation and setup timing depend on the lender. Wells Fargo Auto, for example, says to allow at least three business days before a scheduled withdrawal when canceling its autopay. That is Wells Fargo Auto’s instruction, not a universal cancellation deadline: Wells Fargo Auto automatic payments.

Update your bank’s bill-pay entry separately
If your bank sends the recurring payment, make any required changes in the bank’s bill-pay service—not just in the new lender’s online account. Use the exact payee name, loan number, and payment address shown in the transition notice. Some servicers instruct borrowers to cancel the former payee entry and create a new one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFifth Third’s transition instructions illustrate the distinction: payments established through Onity transferred to Fifth Third, while customers using another bank’s bill-pay feature were told to update the payee details using the transition letter: Fifth Third mortgage servicing transition. Do not assume the same treatment applies to your account.

Verify the first payment after the change
Before relying on the new setup, confirm with the new lender or servicer that it has the right payment method and account details. Check the next scheduled payment date and destination in the new online account, or contact the servicer for confirmation. If you use bank bill pay, also check the pending payment in your bank’s bill-pay service.
- Keep the transition notice and any confirmation of changed payment instructions.
- Check for a payment already scheduled with the former lender or as an old bank bill-pay entry before creating a replacement, to avoid an unintended duplicate.
- If a payment is due soon and you cannot confirm the instructions, contact the servicer using contact information from an official notice or account—not details from an unsolicited message.
Use the notice for account-specific rules
Payment dates, account numbers, addresses, fees, grace periods, transfer handling, and any protections during a changeover depend on the lender, loan, and transition. For example, Chase’s transfer FAQ describes its own payment-forwarding and late-fee treatment; that does not establish how another servicer will handle a payment. Follow the instructions for your account or get confirmation directly from your lender or servicer.
