To update Apple TV manually, open Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software, then choose Download and Install if an update is available. To enable automatic updates, open Settings > System > Software Updates and turn on Automatically Update. Keep Apple TV connected to power and the internet until installation finishes.
Update Apple TV manually
- On Apple TV, open Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software.
- If an update is available, select Download and Install.
- Leave Apple TV connected to power and Wi-Fi or Ethernet while it downloads and installs. Apple says the device restarts, prepares and installs the update, then restarts again; its status light may flash slowly. Apple’s instruction is: “Keep your Apple TV connected and plugged in to power until the update is complete.” Apple Support: Update your Apple TV.
Turn on automatic updates
Open Settings > System > Software Updates and enable Automatically Update. Apple TV displays a notification when an update is available. Automatic updates are convenient if you do not want to check manually; updating manually lets you choose when to start, so you can begin when the device can remain connected through the installation. If an Apple TV update seems stuck
Check that Apple TV has a network connection over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then use the exact message or screen shown to choose the next step. Do not unplug the device just because an update is taking time.
“Preparing Update” or “Applying Update” is on screen
Allow the update more time. If either message remains for more than an hour, contact Apple Support before restarting or disconnecting Apple TV.

If this screen remains for more than an hour, unplug Apple TV from power and reconnect it. If the update still fails, contact Apple Support.
The screen offers Restart, Reset All Settings, or Restore
Try Restart first. If the problem continues, try Reset All Settings, followed by Restore if needed. These choices appear in a different troubleshooting situation from an update that still says “Preparing Update” or “Applying Update”; follow Apple’s instructions for the screen you actually see. Which updates your Apple TV can install
Available software depends on the Apple TV model, and features or content can also vary by hardware and region. Apple’s software history covers Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, but it does not mean every model can install every release.
