You do not have to update Android before WhatsApp: official guidance does not require that order. For a cautious sequence, first confirm a recent WhatsApp chat backup, then install any available Android update, check that the phone works after it restarts, and finally update WhatsApp through Google Play.
Before updating, check both backups
WhatsApp chat backup and Android device backup are separate. A completed Android backup does not prove that WhatsApp chats are backed up or restorable.

WhatsApp says its backups may use mobile data and recommends Wi-Fi to avoid possible charges. Google Account backup is not automatically protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption; that protection applies only if you enable WhatsApp’s encrypted-backup option. Google’s Android guidance, accessed October 7, 2026, says Google Account device backup storage is available at no charge up to 15 GB, with additional storage available through Google One.
Check for an Android update
- To check the installed version and security update status, open Settings > About phone or About tablet, then select Android version. Names and locations can differ by device.
- To check for an update, open Settings > System > Software updates and follow the phone’s prompts. Some manufacturers use different menu labels.
- Read the update details and follow any device-specific instructions. If the phone says it is up to date, there may be no update available for that model yet.
Google notes that update schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and mobile carrier. Older phones may not support newer Android versions, so an update may not be offered.

Prepare and install the Android update
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Google notes that updates can be large and may take some time.
- Charge the phone to at least 75%, following Google’s recommendation.
- Allow time for the installation and restart. Follow the on-screen instructions and do not interrupt an update in progress.
Once the phone restarts, unlock it and make sure it starts normally and that essential functions you rely on are working. This is a practical check, not a guarantee that every app or setting will behave identically after an update.
Update WhatsApp through Google Play
When the phone is running normally, open Google Play, find WhatsApp, and install an update if one is available. Google Play is an official WhatsApp installation route. WhatsApp’s Android download page currently states a minimum requirement of Android OS 6.0 or above; check the page for the latest requirement because it can change. If the phone’s Android version is below the current minimum, the Play Store may not offer a compatible update.

If a backup or restore is stuck
Before uninstalling WhatsApp or changing phones, resolve any uncertainty about whether the chat backup completed. WhatsApp says chat history is not stored on its servers and that it cannot restore chats for users. Removing the app before confirming a usable backup can therefore put chats at risk.
