TVs running webOS 4.5 or earlier use Settings > All Settings > General > About This TV > Check for Updates. This check looks for software released to your exact television model; LG does not document a separate on-TV security-patch dashboard or a complete installed-patch history. For a model-specific security or firmware answer, check the TV’s model page on your regional LG support site.
What the update check actually tells you
LG delivers firmware by television model, webOS generation, and region. When you select Check for Updates, the TV contacts LG and reports whether a software package is currently offered to that model. An available package can contain operating-system changes, app compatibility updates, feature changes, and security fixes. LG Kenya describes the general purpose this way: “Software updates provide essential security patches and support for new smart features and the latest streaming apps.” That statement is from LG Electronics / LG Kenya support; it does not identify which patch any particular television has received.

A message such as “no update available” has a narrow meaning: the TV found no package currently offered through that check. It does not prove that every known vulnerability has been fixed, that the model is still within an active security-support period, or that another regional LG site has the same download. LG’s published instructions do not show a security-status screen, patch-level inventory, or universal end-of-support lookup. Use the model-specific software page and its release notes when you need to investigate security coverage.
Before you start
Find the exact model number
Model matching is the most important preparation step for either update route. The model number is normally printed on the rear label or shown in the television’s information screen. Record the complete designation, including letters, numbers, suffixes, and regional characters. Two TVs that look similar can receive different firmware, and a file for a different suffix should not be treated as interchangeable.

Use the model number on your local LG support website to see the software downloads and notes that apply to your set. LG’s US help pages also provide model-selection links for downloads, but regional availability and interface wording can differ. Start with your country’s LG support domain if the US page does not list your television.
Keep the TV powered and connected
For an internet update, connect the TV to a working wired or wireless network before opening the update menu. Keep the television connected to power throughout downloading and installation. A firmware installation can restart the TV; do not switch it off simply because the screen goes blank or a progress message pauses.
Know which webOS generation you are using
The menu route changes by generation. LG cautions that wording and screenshots can vary by model, so use the closest path below and look for the same labels on your screen.

| webOS 6.0 and later | Settings > All Settings > Support > Software Update | Check for Updates |
| webOS 5.0 | Settings > All Settings > Support > Software Update | Check for Updates |
| webOS 4.5 and earlier | Settings > All Settings > General > About This TV | Check for Updates |
These generation-based paths come from LG’s US guidance, “LG TV – How can I update the TV software (firmware)?”. The same article notes that instructions and images may differ by model.
Update webOS over the internet
This is the normal method because the TV selects the package intended for itself. You do not need to buy a USB drive for an internet update.
- Connect the TV to the internet over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. If the TV cannot reach online services, resolve that connection issue before starting an internet check.
- Open Settings, then choose All Settings.
- For webOS 5.0, 6.0, and later, open Support > Software Update. For webOS 4.5 or earlier, open General > About This TV.
- Select Check for Updates. The TV checks LG’s service for software offered to that model and region.
- If a package appears, choose the displayed Download and Install or equivalent install command. Read the on-screen warning before confirming.
- Leave the TV connected to power and allow the process to finish. It may restart while applying the firmware. Use the television normally only after it returns to its regular home screen.
The exact button text can vary, but the decisive label is Check for Updates. LG’s general procedure and model-specific notes are published in its June 12, 2026 update guide.

Turn automatic updates on or off
Enable automatic installation
Open the same Software Update screen and look for Allow Auto Update or Auto Update. Turn it on if you want the TV to install supported updates without waiting for you to approve each one. LG uses slightly different wording and placement across models.

Enabling it does not create a separate security channel; it only changes how an update offered to your model is handled.
Understand LG’s notification behavior
LG says an update-guide notification appears when the television is online, automatic updating is turned off, and a new update is available. You can then follow the prompt to review and install it. With automatic updating enabled, LG documents that the software is applied without requiring that confirmation. This behavior is described in LG’s update-notification help article.
Neither setting guarantees that every model receives every release at the same time. Availability remains controlled by the model and regional software catalogue. If you need to know whether a particular release exists, perform a manual check and review the model’s LG support page.
How to check for a security update responsibly
Use the TV check first
Run Check for Updates using the generation-appropriate path. If LG offers a package, note the version or release information shown before installing, if your model displays it. A current firmware package may include security fixes, but the menu does not necessarily identify each fix individually.

Confirm the model-specific package online
Search LG’s regional support site for the complete model number and open the software or drivers area. Compare the version listed there with the version shown on the TV. Read any release notes supplied for that model. This is the appropriate place to look for a downloadable file, release date, and LG’s description of included changes. LG’s support instructions direct users to select their model for the relevant software rather than assuming one release applies to every television.

Interpret “no update available” correctly
- It means no software package is currently offered to that model through the TV’s check.
- It does not establish that the model has received every security fix known to LG.
- It does not prove that the model remains in active security support.
- It does not rule out regional differences in download availability or release timing.
If a security advisory, vulnerability report, or support answer names a firmware version, compare that version with the exact model page rather than relying only on the on-screen “up to date” message. LG’s public guidance reviewed for this procedure does not provide a universal patch-history or end-of-support database.
Manual USB update when the network method is unavailable
USB installation is an alternative, not a prerequisite. Use it when the TV cannot update online or when LG specifically directs you to install a model-matched file manually. You need a computer with internet access, the exact model number, and an empty USB flash drive with at least 1 GB of storage. LG’s June 2026 US instructions specify the 1 GB minimum.
Prepare the drive
- On a computer, open LG’s regional software-download or support page and select the television’s exact model.
- Download the firmware archive provided for that model. Do not substitute a file for a visually similar TV or a different regional suffix.
- Use the computer’s archive utility to extract the downloaded package.
- On the USB drive, create a folder named exactly
LG_DTV. Capitalization and the underscore matter because LG’s procedure expects that folder name. - Place the extracted update files in that folder according to LG’s download instructions. Keep the drive otherwise empty to reduce the chance of selecting the wrong file.
Install on the television
- Turn on the TV and insert the prepared USB drive into a USB port.
- Wait for the television to detect the package. If it presents an update prompt, read the displayed model and version information.
- Follow the on-screen install instructions and confirm only when the package matches your TV.
- Keep the USB drive connected and do not unplug the television while installation is running.
- Wait for the TV to restart and finish applying the software before removing the drive.
LG’s full USB procedure is in “LG TV – How to update an LG Smart TV.” An older LG page for webOS 3.0 gives an expected installation duration of 1 to 20 minutes. That is a page-specific estimate for the webOS 3.0 procedure, not a promise for current models; the older instructions are available at LG’s webOS 3.0 USB guide.

| Consideration | Internet update | Manual USB update |
|---|---|---|
| Best use | Routine updating when the TV can reach LG online | Network updating is unavailable or LG supplies a manual package |
| Required equipment | TV with a wired or wireless internet connection | Computer with internet, exact model-matched download, and an empty USB drive of at least 1 GB |
| Package selection | The TV checks software offered to its model | You must select and download the exact model package yourself |
| Preparation | Connect the TV and open the update menu | Extract the archive and create the exact LG_DTV folder |
| Security value | Can deliver a security-containing release offered to the model | Can install the same kind of model-specific release manually; USB is not inherently safer or newer |
The two routes install LG firmware; they do not provide different levels of security by themselves. The important safeguards are selecting the correct model, using an authentic LG package, and allowing the installation to complete without interruption.

The update menu is missing
Check the webOS generation path. Newer sets place the option under Support > Software Update, while webOS 4.5 and earlier place it under General > About This TV. If labels still differ, use the model number to open the corresponding LG regional help page because LG says menu placement can vary by model.
The TV says no update is available
Confirm that the television is online, run the check again, and compare the model number with LG’s regional software page. If both show no package, record the date and version currently installed. Treat that result only as an indication that no release is presently offered through that channel, not as proof of complete security coverage.

The TV does not recognize the USB package
- Verify that the download is for the complete, exact model designation.
- Confirm that the archive was extracted rather than copied as a compressed file.
- Check that the folder is named
LG_DTVexactly and is located at the USB drive’s top level. - Ensure the drive meets LG’s minimum capacity of 1 GB and is otherwise empty.
- Use the on-screen prompt only after the TV identifies the package as intended for that model.
The installation appears to stop
Do not unplug the TV, remove the USB drive, or repeatedly press the remote’s power button while the installation is active. Allow the process to complete and restart. If the TV later returns to normal operation but the version did not change, recheck the model-specific LG instructions before attempting another installation.
The TV restarted during installation
A restart can be part of applying firmware. Wait until the regular home screen returns, then open the software-information screen and check the installed version. If the TV does not return to normal operation, use the model’s LG support page for the appropriate recovery guidance rather than trying a random firmware file.
Verify the result and keep a useful record
- Reopen the software-update screen after the TV has restarted.
- Record the installed version, model number, and installation date.
- If the LG model page lists release notes, save the page or note the release date associated with that version.
- Run Check for Updates once more. A message that no newer package is available means the TV has no additional release offered at that moment.
- If automatic updates are enabled, leave the setting on only if unattended installation suits your household; otherwise, turn it off and respond to LG’s update notifications manually.
Keeping the version and date makes future security questions easier to answer because you can compare a published model-specific requirement with what is actually installed.
Regional and model limitations to remember
LG’s US help library and regional support pages are not interchangeable guarantees. A menu label, download, or release date can differ by country, model family, or webOS generation. The US pages provide the procedures cited here, while LG Kenya’s support guidance explicitly discusses security patches. For a definitive availability answer, use the LG support domain serving the television’s sales region and enter the complete model number.
Do not assume that a newer webOS number automatically means a particular security patch, or that an older television can use firmware from a newer generation. Firmware is model-specific. If an LG support page does not list a file for your model, do not force an unrelated package through USB.
