Back up your world, launch the new release with a duplicate copy, and keep the original untouched until you have verified the upgrade. Java Edition creates a dated ZIP with Make Backup; Bedrock Edition uses an exported or copied world file, with exact steps depending on the platform. Realms and dedicated servers require their own download-and-test workflow.

This process preserves the played save rather than merely regenerating terrain from a seed. The safest plan is the same for every edition: make an independent backup, test a duplicate, inspect important areas and systems, and retain the untouched original for rollback.

Minecraft stores a world in a versioned data format. A newer release can read many older saves, but the first launch may migrate that data. After migration, an older game version may no longer be able to open the save safely. That is why the correct order is: stop playing, create an independent backup, duplicate it, open only the duplicate in the target release, and inspect the result.
Updating is not the same as recreating a world from its seed. A seed can generate similar terrain, but it does not restore buildings, inventories, villagers, farms, maps, commands, or your explored progress. A genuine backup contains the save data that records those things.

What an upgrade can affect
The stored blocks in existing chunks normally remain where they were, but the target release can change world-height limits, terrain generation, structures, ores, commands, registries, or the way third-party content is loaded. Newly generated chunks use the newer rules, so a world can contain an obvious boundary between old and new terrain. The conversion itself can also be effectively one-way: a save migrated by a newer release is not a dependable downgrade candidate.
Java release notes currently use the label Upgrade and Play when a world needs data-format migration. Bedrock can show a backup option and Update and Play for major format or generation changes. Treat either prompt as confirmation that you are about to alter that copy.

Before you update: a safety checklist
- Play the current world once, save, and exit completely. For a server, stop it cleanly so region and player files are not being written.
- Make a fresh backup before the first launch in the new version.
- Store one untouched copy outside the normal Minecraft worlds folder. A portable external SSD is a practical destination for Java ZIP files and Bedrock exports; no particular brand or capacity is required.
- Make a working duplicate of that backup for testing. The test copy, not the only backup, is the one you open in the new release.
- Record the current edition, game version, mod loader, mods, data packs, add-ons, resource packs, and server plugins.
- Note the location of your principal bases, spawn, portals, farms, trading halls, command systems, and the edge of explored territory.
- Plan to inspect spawn, bases, inventories, farms, redstone, dimensions, villagers, maps, and important command systems.
Do not delete or overwrite the original until the upgraded copy has loaded and passed those checks. Keeping the pre-upgrade backup indefinitely is sensible for a valuable long-running world.
Choose the workflow for your edition and world type
Java single-player worlds have an in-game dated-ZIP backup and a clear upgrade prompt. Bedrock relies on export or copy controls whose names and file access vary across Windows, consoles, and mobile devices. A Realm must first be downloaded from the service, while a dedicated server must be stopped and copied as a complete directory. Java-to-Bedrock or Bedrock-to-Java conversion is a separate migration with additional data loss risks, not a routine version update.
Java Edition single-player: the safest update procedure
1. Create Minecraft’s built-in backup
- Open the Java Edition installation that currently opens the world.
- Select Singleplayer, highlight the world, and choose Edit.
- Select Make Backup. Minecraft writes a dated ZIP backup.
- Copy that ZIP to a separate drive or folder outside the usual
.minecraftdirectory.
The ZIP is your rollback point. Do not use the only copy as the test copy, and do not leave the only backup in the same folder that may be removed while troubleshooting.
2. Prepare and launch the target release
- Choose the newer release in the launcher and start the game.
- Open Singleplayer and select a duplicated world, not the untouched backup.
- If the release detects a required data migration, it displays Upgrade and Play.
- Confirm only after checking that you selected the test copy. During this process, Edit World and Re-Create World remain unavailable until the upgrade is completed.
Current Java release notes, including the 26.1 notes, use Upgrade and Play for worlds that need data-format migration. The wording may differ in other releases, but a warning or upgrade prompt should be treated as a one-way operation on that copy.

- Load at the original spawn and visit your principal bases.
- Check player inventories, ender chests, armor stands, named items, maps, and achievements.
- Test farms, redstone clocks, portals, villager trading halls, storage systems, and command blocks.
- Enter each dimension used by the world, including the Nether and End.
- Check that resource packs and data packs load without errors.
- Look for missing chunks, unusual terrain seams, broken portals, or messages about invalid data.
Only after these checks should you consider replacing the older working copy. If you need to move the test world to another computer, unzip a backup into that computer’s Java saves directory. Minecraft Help lists %appdata%.minecraftsaves on Windows and ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves on macOS.
Bedrock Edition: export or copy the world first
Windows procedure
- Open Bedrock Edition and select Play.
- Find the world and select its pencil-shaped Edit icon.
- Open File Management and select Export World.
- Save the exported world file somewhere separate from the Minecraft data folder.
- Duplicate the export, then import or open the duplicate in the target release.
Restore a backup by importing the saved world file or by moving the copy back into the platform’s world-file location, depending on the version and installation. Keep the original export unchanged while you test.
Console and mobile procedure
Bedrock storage controls differ among Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Android, iOS, and Windows installations. Use the platform’s world-copy or export function where available, and preserve the resulting file or cloud backup separately. Do not assume that a backup made on one platform can be browsed directly on another; file access permissions and restore locations can differ.
If the platform offers only an in-game duplicate or cloud backup, make that copy before opening the world in the new release. Record which copy is the original and which is the test version so you do not accidentally update the wrong one.

When Bedrock shows an update prompt
Major world-generation changes can produce a prompt offering a backup option and Update and Play. Select the backup option first, then update a copy. For the 1.18 terrain change, existing flat worlds gained usable vertical space from Y=-64 through Y=320. Existing blocks stayed in their original locations, while the newly available space was filled according to the updated generation rules. This changes where future terrain can generate; it does not rebuild your existing structures.
Realms: download before experimenting
Bedrock Realms
After Quit & Save, Bedrock Realms keeps the most recent world version in its backups. In the Realms Hub, use Download World to create a local copy before testing a new release. Work on the downloaded copy so the live Realm remains available to other players and can still be restored if the local test fails.
Java Realms
Java Realms provides downloadable backups through its World Backups controls. Download the world, test the local copy in the target release, and retain the Realm backup until everyone has confirmed that the upgraded world works. Do not let players continue making changes to the live Realm while you are comparing it with an unverified local migration.
Dedicated servers: update a copy, not the live directory
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the complete world directory, including all dimension data and configuration files that belong to the world.
- Store that copy outside the server installation.
- Install the target server software in a separate test directory.
- Point the test server at the copied world and start it with the same Java runtime and required server-side content.
- Connect with a test account and check spawn, inventories, dimensions, farms, redstone, commands, permissions, and logs.
- Only after testing should you schedule downtime to move the upgraded world into production.
Control-panel labels and backup retention vary by hosting provider. A managed server with versioned backups can simplify rollback, but it does not remove the need to stop the server and verify a copy. Never copy a world while the live process is actively writing region or player files; the result may be incomplete.

Mods, data packs, add-ons, and plugins
A world can load while its extra content is broken. Before upgrading, check every mod, loader, data pack, Bedrock add-on, and server plugin for the target release. The official upgrade workflows do not guarantee compatibility for every third-party project.
- Remove or disable content that has no target-version release, but preserve its configuration and backup first.
- Read each project’s migration notes for changed blocks, entities, recipes, commands, or required loader versions.
- Test with a copy and inspect the log for missing registries, invalid data-pack functions, failed resource references, or plugin startup errors.
- Do not save the upgraded world repeatedly while troubleshooting unknown content; return to a clean duplicate when necessary.
- When comparing results, change one mod, add-on, or pack at a time so you can identify which component caused a failure.
World-generation changes and unexplored chunks
Existing chunks generally retain their stored blocks, but chunks generated after the upgrade use the newer release’s terrain rules, structures, ores, and height limits. This can create a visible boundary between old and new terrain. Do not travel far into unexplored areas until the world itself has been checked and your backup is secure.
For valuable maps, mark the edge of explored territory before upgrading. Then generate a small test area beyond that edge and inspect transitions, caves, structures, and portals before allowing players to explore widely. If the transition is unacceptable, restore the pre-upgrade copy rather than continuing to generate more chunks that will have to be removed later.
How to restore a failed upgrade
Java
- Exit the game immediately if the upgraded copy is missing progress or shows errors.
- Move the failed copy out of the active saves folder.
- Unzip the dated backup into a separate folder.
- Place the restored world folder in the Java saves directory.
Minecraft Help identifies these Java locations: %appdata%.minecraftsaves on Windows and ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves on macOS. Folder names can be changed to avoid collisions. Launch the older release against the restored copy only after confirming that the correct backup was selected.
Bedrock and Realms
Import the untouched Bedrock export or copy it back to the platform’s world location. For Realms, use the manual or automatic backup and restore controls. Do not try to recover progress by recreating the world from its seed; that restores terrain generation only, not builds, inventories, villagers, maps, or explored progress.
Converting between Java and Bedrock
Java-to-Bedrock or Bedrock-to-Java conversion is a separate migration, not a normal version update. Microsoft Learn describes Chunker as an open-source, third-party converter. It can process level settings, blocks, biomes, tile entities, multiple dimensions, containers and items, and in-game maps. The same documentation states that it cannot currently convert entities or player inventories.
Keep the original edition’s backup untouched, convert a duplicate, and inspect every dimension and storage area. Expect missing entities or inventory data and plan a manual recreation where necessary. Because Chunker is provided by external third-party contributors rather than Mojang or Microsoft, treat its output as a conversion to validate, not as an official lossless backup or compatibility guarantee.

Which update path should you use?
| Situation | Backup method | Test method | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java single-player | Edit → Make Backup; dated ZIP | Open a duplicated world in the target release | Data migration can make the test copy unsuitable for older releases |
| Bedrock on Windows | Play → Edit → File Management → Export World | Import or open a duplicate export | Platform-specific storage and add-on compatibility |
| Bedrock console or mobile | Platform-specific copy/export or cloud backup | Use a separate copied world where supported | Limited file access and differing restore paths |
| Bedrock Realm | Realms Hub → Download World | Test the downloaded local copy | Accidentally changing the live Realm |
| Java Realm | World Backups download | Test the local download | Players joining while migration is unverified |
| Dedicated server | Stop server and copy the complete world directory | Run a separate test server | Incomplete copies, locked files, or incompatible plugins |
| Java ↔ Bedrock conversion | Preserve the original edition backup | Convert only a duplicate | Entities and player inventories are not converted by Chunker |
Common mistakes and their fixes
Opening the only copy in the new release
Fix: restore from the untouched ZIP, export, Realm backup, or server directory and repeat the test with a duplicate.
Assuming a seed is a backup
Fix: use the actual save data. A seed cannot restore construction, items, villagers, maps, or player progress.
Exploring immediately after upgrading
Fix: verify existing areas first, then explore a small test region so new terrain generation can be inspected safely.
Ignoring third-party content warnings
Fix: check target-version notes for each mod, add-on, data pack, or plugin and test with a clean duplicate.

Replacing the live server or Realm too soon
Fix: leave the original online or preserved while players test the downloaded or copied world.
Trying to downgrade the migrated save
Fix: stop using the migrated copy and restore the pre-upgrade backup in the older release.
Final verification checklist
- The world opens in the target release without an unexpected recovery message.
- Spawn, bases, containers, inventories, maps, and named items are present.
- All dimensions and portals work.
- Villagers, farms, redstone, command blocks, and permissions behave normally.
- Data packs, add-ons, mods, resource packs, and plugins report no unresolved errors.
- A small area of newly generated terrain has been checked for acceptable transitions.
- A second copy of the pre-upgrade backup still exists outside the game folder.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I open a 1.17 or 1.20 world in the newest Minecraft version?
Usually, yes, when the target release supports that save format. Make a backup first, open a duplicate, and accept the upgrade prompt only for that copy.
Best Value
Will updating change my existing builds?
Existing blocks normally remain in their stored locations, but new terrain uses the newer generation rules. Major changes can also alter available world height and create transitions at unexplored-chunk boundaries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat if Minecraft says the world is corrupted after updating?
Exit without continuing, remove the failed test copy, and restore the untouched Java ZIP, Bedrock export, Realm backup, or server-directory copy. Do not rely on the seed to recover progress.
Can I downgrade after upgrading?
Downgrading a migrated save is not reliably safe. Restore the pre-upgrade backup instead of opening the migrated copy in an older release.
Is a portable external SSD required for backups?
No. It is a practical separate location for Java ZIP files and Bedrock exports, but any safe storage outside the active Minecraft folder can hold the untouched copy.
How do I update a Bedrock Realm without risking the live world?
Use Quit & Save, download the world from the Realms Hub, and test the downloaded copy. Keep the Realm backup and live world unchanged until verification is complete.
Does a seed restore my inventory and buildings?
No. A seed recreates terrain generation only. Buildings, inventories, villagers, maps, commands, and explored progress require the actual world backup.
What does Chunker preserve when converting Java and Bedrock?
Chunker can process level settings, blocks, biomes, tile entities, multiple dimensions, containers and items, and in-game maps. Its documented limitations include entities and player inventories, so convert only a duplicate and check the result manually.
Should I explore new areas immediately after the update?
No. First verify spawn, bases, dimensions, storage, and critical systems. Then generate a small test region beyond explored territory to inspect terrain transitions before wider exploration.
The Bottom Line
Make a real backup, test only a duplicate in the target release, and keep the original Java ZIP, Bedrock export, Realm download, or server copy untouched until every important area and system has been checked.
