How to Update All Docker Containers on a Linux Server

A practical, project-by-project method for updating Docker containers on Linux, including Compose commands, standalone container recovery, volume safety, verification, rollback, and automatic updates.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For containers managed by Docker Compose, update one project at a time: run docker compose pull, then docker compose up -d from the directory containing its Compose file. Compose downloads newer service images and recreates services whose image or configuration changed. If you want to check for images during the start operation and recreate every service, use docker compose up -d --pull always --force-recreate.

Those commands apply only to the selected Compose project. A Linux server can contain several independent Compose projects and containers created with standalone docker run; each requires its own update procedure.

What “update all containers” actually means

Docker does not have one safe command that discovers every container on a server and upgrades it. Containers belong to different management scopes:

  • A Compose project: services declared in one Compose file and managed together. A Compose command affects only that project.
  • A standalone container: created directly with docker run, without a Compose file describing its settings.
  • An application image that must be rebuilt: pulling from a registry is not enough when your own Dockerfile or source code changed.

Updating means obtaining a newer image, recreating the container from the intended configuration, and checking that the service is healthy. Recreating a container is normal Docker operation: mounted volumes are preserved during normal Compose recreation, while the container’s writable layer is replaced. Backups, database migrations, and application-specific recovery plans are still your responsibility.

Before you restart anything

Inventory projects and dependencies

List every Compose project you operate and the services that can be restarted together. A reverse proxy, database, queue, and application may share a project, while monitoring or unrelated customer workloads may use separate files. Record the directory of each Compose file, or the full path you will pass with -f. Do not assume that the project in your current shell directory represents the entire server.

Confirm backups and maintenance timing

Verify that database backups and copies of important bind-mounted or named-volume data are current. Schedule a maintenance window when a restart could interrupt requests, background jobs, or scheduled tasks. Normal Compose recreation preserves mounted volumes, but a preserved volume does not guarantee that a newer application can read an older database schema.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review tags, credentials, and release notes

Check whether services use mutable tags such as latest or pinned version tags. Mutable tags can point to a different image without a change to the Compose file; pinned tags make the intended version clearer but still require an explicit edit when you choose to upgrade. Confirm registry credentials, read the image or application release notes, and identify any required migration or configuration changes before pulling.

Keep a rollback record

Save the current Compose file, environment-variable configuration, and the image digest currently running. This gives you the exact configuration and image reference needed to restore the previous release if the new one fails. A rollback is not simply a matter of restarting an old container: the old image, settings, data compatibility, and any completed migration all have to be considered.

Standard Compose update procedure

1. Select one project

Change to the directory that contains the project’s Compose file. If the file is elsewhere, specify it explicitly in every command:

docker compose -f /path/to/compose.yaml pull

The -f option selects a Compose file outside the current directory. An equivalent approach is to configure the COMPOSE_FILE environment variable for the project. Make sure any required environment variables are available before running Compose; Docker’s production guidance assumes they are configured on the server.

2. Pull service images

docker compose pull

docker compose pull downloads the images referenced by services in the selected Compose file. It does not, by itself, replace containers that are already running. A service whose image tag still resolves to the same digest will have nothing new to download.

For a file in another location, use:

docker compose -f /path/to/compose.yaml pull

3. Recreate and start changed services

docker compose up -d

up creates and starts services; -d leaves them running in the background. Compose compares the desired configuration and image with the existing containers. When either has changed, it stops and recreates the affected container. Services that have not changed are left running.

4. Force a fresh pull and recreation when required

Use the combined command when the operation itself must check the registry and every service must be recreated:

docker compose up -d --pull always --force-recreate

--pull always tells Compose to pull before starting. --force-recreate tells Compose to recreate all containers in the selected project even when it detects no image or configuration difference. Docker’s command reference describes this flag as the way to force Compose to stop and recreate all containers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you only need to force recreation and have already pulled images, this is sufficient:

docker compose up -d --force-recreate

Do not add docker compose down to a routine update. Stopping and recreating through up normally gives a smaller change window and avoids removing project resources you did not intend to remove.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

5. Verify the result

Check the project immediately after up completes:

docker compose ps

Then inspect recent logs for each service and confirm that health checks, exposed endpoints, background workers, and dependent services are operating. A container can be running while its application is unable to connect to a database or serve requests. Test the user-facing path, not just the container state.

6. Repeat for every Compose project

Run the same pull, recreate, and verification sequence for each independent Compose file. A command issued in one project cannot update services declared in another file, even when both projects run on the same host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing the right Compose command

Command What it does When to use it
docker compose pull Pulls service images for the selected project; does not recreate running containers. Prepare images before a controlled restart.
docker compose up -d Starts services in the background and recreates services whose image or configuration changed. Normal project update after pulling.
docker compose up -d --force-recreate Recreates every service in the selected project, whether or not Compose detected a change. When all containers must be replaced.
docker compose up -d --pull always --force-recreate Checks the registry, pulls before starting, and recreates every service. A single command for a deliberately full refresh.
docker compose start Starts containers that already exist and are stopped; it does not create replacements from newly pulled images. Restarting an existing, unchanged project—not updating it.

When pulling is not enough: rebuild your own image

pull retrieves images from a registry. If your application code or Dockerfile changed locally, there may be no new registry image to retrieve. Docker’s production guidance says to rebuild the image and recreate the containers when application code changes.

Use the project’s normal build process, then run docker compose up -d so the rebuilt image is used. Review the resulting image, environment variables, and migration requirements before exposing the new version to users. Do not assume that changing a source file on the host changes an already-built production image unless the service is intentionally configured with a development bind mount.

Data, volumes, and database migrations

What Compose preserves

During normal Compose recreation, mounted volumes are preserved. Named volumes and bind mounts therefore continue to hold the data they contained before the container was replaced. The container’s temporary writable layer is not a durable backup location and should not be treated as one.

Why backups still matter

Volume preservation protects data from routine container replacement; it does not protect against application bugs, accidental deletion, filesystem failure, or an incompatible schema migration. Take and verify backups before updating databases or stateful services, and know how to restore them independently of Docker.

Plan migrations explicitly

Read the release notes for services that store state. A new image may require a one-time migration, a changed environment variable, or a specific upgrade path. Start dependent services in the order documented by the application, and keep the previous image digest and configuration available until the upgraded service has passed its checks.

Updating containers created with docker run

Standalone containers are not represented by a Compose file, so Compose cannot discover or update them. There is no universal safe one-line replacement command: the original environment variables, bind mounts, named volumes, ports, networks, restart policy, labels, entrypoint, and command must all be reproduced.

Record the existing run configuration

For each standalone container, capture its image reference and the settings that define how it runs. Docker’s inspection output can help you document mounts, published ports, environment variables, networks, restart behavior, and the command or entrypoint. Also record which volumes contain persistent data and whether other containers depend on the service.

Pull and recreate deliberately

  1. Confirm a tested replacement image and read its release notes.
  2. Pull the replacement image from the registry.
  3. Stop the existing container during the approved maintenance window.
  4. Recreate it with the recorded ports, mounts, networks, environment, restart policy, entrypoint, and command.
  5. Verify health, logs, endpoints, and dependent services before removing your rollback option.

Preserve the existing volumes and other state when creating the replacement. Do not delete a volume simply because the old container is being removed. If the service is important, migrate its definition into a version-controlled Compose file so future updates are repeatable and reviewable.

Automatic updates with Watchtower

Watchtower is an optional containerized updater. Its official quickstart describes a default deployment that monitors all running containers, polls for updated image digests every 24 hours, pulls an updated image, gracefully shuts down the target container and its dependencies, and starts a replacement while maintaining the previous configuration. Its container-selection documentation also describes monitor-only operation and controls for choosing which containers are selected.

Automation changes the operational decision from “when should I run the update?” to “what happens whenever an image changes?” That can reduce routine maintenance, but it can also restart a production service before you have reviewed release notes or prepared a migration.

Consideration Manual Compose update Automatic updater
Maintenance window You choose the exact time and sequence. Restarts occur according to the updater’s polling and selection rules.
Release review You can inspect notes and approve each version. A new digest may be deployed before human review unless your process adds a gate.
Scope Explicitly limited to one Compose project or selected standalone container. Depends on monitoring and selection settings; an unrestricted default can include all running containers.
Rollback You can retain the old digest and configuration before acting. Rollback must be designed in advance; automatic replacement does not create a complete recovery plan.
Notifications and health You can watch logs, health checks, and endpoints during the change. Requires external monitoring and alerts to detect a failed unattended restart.
Tag discipline You decide whether to use mutable or pinned tags. Digest polling still depends on which images and tags the updater is allowed to monitor.
Restart tolerance Suitable when interruptions need coordination. Suitable only when services tolerate automatic restarts and dependencies are tested.

Safeguards for unattended updates

  • Back up databases and application data on a schedule that matches the service’s recovery requirements.
  • Use health checks and external monitoring; a process that starts a container is not proof that the application is usable.
  • Define which containers may be updated automatically and which require approval.
  • Keep image digests, Compose files, environment configuration, and migration procedures so you can roll back.
  • Test updates in a non-production environment when the service is stateful or customer-facing.
  • Set an explicit maintenance policy for dependencies that must restart together.

Troubleshooting an update

The pull reports no change

The tag may still resolve to the same digest, or the project may reference a pinned version that you have not changed. Confirm the image reference in the Compose file and check whether a newer release requires editing that tag. If you need every service recreated despite an unchanged digest, use --force-recreate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compose updates only some services

That is expected when only some images or configurations changed. To replace every service in that project, add --force-recreate. To update another group of services, run the command from its own Compose project or pass its separate file with -f.

A service cannot pull its image

Check registry credentials, image spelling, network access, and the tag or digest in the Compose file. Resolve authentication or availability problems before stopping a healthy production container. If the registry has published a breaking release under a mutable tag, pin a known-good version while you investigate.

The container starts but the application is unhealthy

Inspect recent logs and health status, then test the endpoint and dependencies. Common causes include missing environment variables, changed default settings, incompatible database schemas, and services starting in an unexpected order. Restore the previous image and configuration if the new release cannot be made healthy within the maintenance window.

Data appears missing after recreation

Check that the replacement uses the same named volumes and bind-mount paths as the original service. A changed mount declaration can make an empty directory appear to contain no data even though the original volume still exists. Do not remove volumes while diagnosing the problem; use your backup and documented mount configuration to recover safely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The update interrupted jobs or requests

Review the service’s shutdown behavior and dependency order. Move future updates into a planned maintenance window, drain traffic where the application supports it, and avoid combining unrelated projects in one restart. Automatic updating should be disabled for services that cannot tolerate unscheduled interruption.

A repeatable operating checklist

  1. List every Compose file and standalone container on the server.
  2. Group services that are safe to restart together and identify dependencies.
  3. Verify backups, registry access, environment variables, and release notes.
  4. Record the current image digests and configuration for rollback.
  5. For each Compose project, run docker compose pull with the correct file.
  6. Run docker compose up -d, or use --pull always --force-recreate when a full refresh is intentional.
  7. Check docker compose ps, logs, health checks, endpoints, jobs, and dependent services.
  8. For standalone containers, pull and recreate each one from its recorded run configuration while preserving volumes.
  9. Document the result, any migrations, and the image digest now in production.

Bottom line

Use docker compose pull followed by docker compose up -d for each Compose project on the server. Add --force-recreate when every service in that project must be replaced, and --pull always when the start command must check the registry. Standalone docker run containers require careful, configuration-preserving recreation, while automatic tools such as Watchtower should be deployed only with backups, health monitoring, maintenance rules, and a tested rollback plan.
