To update accepted screenshots in Argos CI, rerun the screenshot-producing tests after your UI change, inspect the new visual differences in the resulting Argos build, and approve the changes that are intentional. Argos then uses the accepted screenshots as the baseline for later comparisons. Approval does not regenerate screenshots; a fresh capture is the first step.
Regenerate screenshots and open the Argos build
- Run the screenshot test job you already use, such as Playwright, Cypress, or Storybook, after making the UI change. Argos integrations capture screenshots during those tests.
- If another tool writes image files instead, upload the resulting directory with the Argos CLI. For example:
npx @argos-ci/cli upload ./screenshots. - Open the resulting build in Argos. It compares the new screenshots with the applicable baseline and surfaces visual changes for review. See Argos documentation for its integration and upload workflows.
Review and accept intended changes
Inspect each changed screenshot against its baseline. Use the comparison view to determine whether the difference matches the UI change you made or signals an unintended regression. Argos supports side-by-side or overlay inspection and comments pinned to a screenshot location, which can help reviewers discuss a specific detail.

- Approve a change or build only after verifying that the visual differences are expected.
- Reject or request changes when a difference is unexpected. Fix the UI or test setup, rerun the capture, and review the new result. An active rejection blocks the build.
Accepted screenshots become the baseline for subsequent comparisons. Do not treat approval as a substitute for capturing the changed UI, and do not overwrite or commit a local set of baseline PNGs as the Argos hosted-baseline update procedure.

Reading build information can use a project token. Submitting a review requires a personal access token and follows that user’s project permissions. Do not use a project token for the review submission step.
Understand which baseline Argos compares
For a pull request, Argos selects the latest approved build on the merge-base commit with the base branch. Builds on main or another configured branch pattern can be auto-approved and supply a current baseline. In this hosted workflow, the approved build and commit history inform later comparisons; a separate committed collection of updated baseline images is generally not needed.

Troubleshoot a screenshot update
- The expected change is not shown: confirm that the screenshot tests ran after the UI change and that the intended capture or image directory was uploaded. Approval alone does not create a new capture.
- The build still reports changes: inspect each difference against the applicable baseline. Approve only intended changes; for unexpected ones, fix the UI or test setup and rerun the capture.
- The build is blocked: an active rejection blocks it. Resolve the underlying issue, capture again, and review the resulting build.
- The CLI cannot submit a review: check that the command uses a personal access token with the user’s required project permissions. Build reads can use a project token, but review submission requires the personal token.
- A pull request compares against an unexpected screenshot: check the latest approved build on the merge-base commit with the base branch, and whether builds on the configured branch pattern are being auto-approved.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a fresh screenshot outside the Argos comparison workflow, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF with one GET request. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of your changed page; create an API key and replace the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
