Some third-party Xbox controllers can be updated without an Xbox console, usually with a Windows PC; a few makers also provide Mac support. There is no universal updater or button sequence: use the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact controller model, and check its operating-system and connection requirements before you begin.
Before you update: identify the exact controller
Find the maker and model on the controller’s label, packaging, or in the manufacturer’s software. Similar-looking controllers from the same brand may use different tools or firmware, so don’t download an update based only on the brand name.

Confirm the updater name, supported operating system, required connection, update-mode instructions, and any steps to complete after installation. Firmware and app compatibility can change; the cited official instructions were checked on October 7, 2026, so verify the current model-specific page before proceeding.

These are examples, not shared requirements. The available official information does not establish that Microsoft’s Xbox Accessories app updates every third-party controller. Use it only if the maker’s instructions for your specific model direct you to do so.

Update the controller using its maker’s instructions
- Install the specified official updater. Use the manufacturer’s support page and the version intended for your model and computer. Avoid firmware files or utilities from unofficial download sites.
- Prepare the required connection. If the instructions call for USB, use a data-capable cable that fits the controller’s port. The connector and cable requirements vary, so no one cable type is universal.
- Enter update mode only when instructed. Follow the exact model-specific button combination or connection sequence. Do not try another model’s button sequence.
- Run the update and wait for completion. Follow the updater’s prompts, and do not disconnect the controller until it reports that the process is finished.
- Complete required follow-up steps. Restart the controller or calibrate it if the manufacturer’s instructions require either step.
Check calibration and restart requirements
Post-update steps depend on the model and firmware. PowerA’s cited Compatibility Updater Tool update is intended to enable calibration features for its specified Enhanced Wired controllers. SCUF’s Valor guide warns that after its cited V0.563 beta update, the joysticks will not work until calibration is completed. That warning applies to the beta firmware and guide in question; it is not a general instruction for other controllers.
For 8BitDo, some model-specific instructions call for restarting the controller after installing firmware. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming every update needs the same restart or calibration step.

If the updater cannot find or update the controller
- Recheck that the model is on the updater’s supported list and that you selected the matching firmware.
- Confirm your computer’s operating system meets the maker’s stated requirement. For example, the cited PowerA Compatibility Updater Tool requires Windows 10 or 11 and does not work on Mac.
- If USB is required, check that the cable supports data and that the controller is connected and placed in the specified update mode.
- For a manual update, return to the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions for selecting the firmware file and restarting the controller.
- If the update completes but the controls do not work normally, check whether the maker requires calibration after that firmware version.
Do not substitute generic Xbox Accessories steps or unofficial firmware downloads when the maker’s updater fails. Follow the model’s official support guidance.
Can every third-party Xbox controller be updated without a console?
No. Some makers provide PC or Mac routes, but support varies by model, and the 8BitDo Arcade Controller for Xbox is an example whose support page directs firmware updates through Ultimate Software X on an Xbox console. Confirm the route on the exact model’s official support page before relying on a computer-only update.
