To update a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, open Settings > Software update and tap Download and install or Check for updates. If an update is available, follow the prompts until installation and restart are complete. If none appears, availability may depend on your model, carrier, region, and rollout timing—not simply whether the device is supported.
Update your Galaxy over the air
- Connect to a reliable network. Samsung says downloads may use Wi-Fi or mobile data, but carrier settings can affect mobile-data availability; Wi-Fi is a good choice for a large update.
- Open Settings > Software update. On some models or carrier versions, the menu is called System updates.
- Tap Check for updates or Download and install, depending on the screen shown.
- If an update is offered, follow the on-screen instructions. Keep the device powered and let it finish installing and restarting. Samsung’s regional guidance recommends at least 20% battery before an update.
- To see the installed software details, open Settings > About phone/tablet > Software information. Menu labels can vary. See Samsung’s update instructions.
Use Smart Switch on a computer
Samsung documents Smart Switch for Windows PCs and Macs as another way to check for and install an update. It can be useful if an over-the-air download repeatedly fails, but it does not guarantee that an update is available for a particular device.

- Open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy device to the computer using a USB cable that supports file transfer. Samsung recommends the cable supplied with the device.
- If Smart Switch offers an update, select Update and follow the prompts.
- Keep the cable connected until the process is complete. The device may restart.

Choose the update method that fits

Why an expected update may not appear
A missing update does not by itself establish that a Galaxy device has reached end of support. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance points to release timing, carrier handling, network conditions, and the device’s original sales channel as possible factors.

- Staged release: Samsung says updates may roll out in waves. Check again periodically rather than assuming every eligible device receives an update at once.
- Carrier release schedule: Carriers may develop and release updates. Check with the original carrier, particularly if the device was sold through a carrier or is carrier-unlocked.
- Original carrier SIM: An unlocked device originally sold for a carrier may need that carrier’s SIM to receive updates.
- Connection: Try Wi-Fi; some carriers require it for large downloads.
- Storage or interrupted download: Free the amount of storage requested on screen. If a download notification offers a resume option, use it.
- Alternate route: Check the device with Smart Switch on a computer to see whether it offers an update.
If you are checking eligibility, note the exact model number, carrier or original sales channel, region, Android and One UI versions, and security patch level. Compare the model with Samsung’s Mobile Security update scope; carrier information may also be needed to understand release timing.
Check the security patch and update support
To check for a security update on supported menus, try Settings > Security and privacy > Updates > Security update > Check for updates. Wording and availability can differ by model and software version. Samsung directs users to its Mobile Security page to check the update scope for specific models.

Samsung’s Mobile Security page describes monthly, quarterly, and biannual firmware security-update scopes. It says that, as of January 2024, support was being extended to up to seven years for Galaxy devices. That is a ceiling, not a promise that every Galaxy phone or tablet receives seven years of updates; check the live scope for the exact model and cadence.
Do not confuse that current model-specific scope with Samsung’s 2022 announcement of up to four generations of Android and One UI upgrades and up to five years of security updates for select devices. Prepare safely and recover from a failed update
Before installation
- Make sure the device has sufficient battery; Samsung’s regional instructions recommend at least 20%.
- For Smart Switch, use a USB cable that supports file transfer and do not unplug it during installation.
- Do not use the device while an update is in progress. Samsung warns that it may restart several times.
- Back up important data before recovery steps that may reset the device.
If the download fails
Reconnect to a network and retry. If the device reports insufficient space, free the amount it requests. A download may be resumable from its notification; if failures continue, try Smart Switch.
If the device will not start normally
Samsung says a device that fails to boot after an update failure requires service to reflash it. Contact Samsung support or your carrier for local service instructions rather than installing unofficial firmware. Before a factory reset, back up your data: Samsung warns that a reset can erase it. Samsung also warns that enhanced security policies prevent downgrading to earlier firmware after moving to the latest software, so a rollback is not a routine recovery option.
