What you need to know before updating
Bedrock Dedicated Server is distributed as separate Windows and Linux archives. A server build is intended to match a corresponding Bedrock client release, so check the build shown on the official download page rather than relying on a version number from an old tutorial. As of October 14, 2026, the current build number was not independently verified here; use the number displayed when you download the archive.

Download the package from Minecraft’s official Bedrock server download page. The page may offer stable and preview files. A preview build should be treated as a test release and run on a separate copy of the server, never on the only production world.
- Plan downtime long enough to stop, copy, replace and test the files.
- Confirm whether you run a normal Windows/Linux installation, a Docker container or a game-host control panel. The update path differs for each.
- Record the current server build and the exact world-folder name before changing anything.
- Make the backup while the server is fully stopped.
Back up the server before anything else
A complete directory copy is your recovery path if the new executable cannot open the world or a file is accidentally replaced. Back up the entire installation, not just the visible world folder: the archive should include the worlds directory, server.properties, permissions.json, allowlist.json, logs and any custom configuration.

Windows backup
- Stop the server from its console or service manager and wait until the process exits.
- In File Explorer, copy the complete Bedrock server folder to a different location, such as a dated backup folder on another drive.
- For a repeatable PowerShell copy, run a command such as
robocopy "C:MinecraftBedrock" "D:BackupsBedrock-2026-10-14" /E /COPYALL /R:1 /W:1, changing both paths to your installation and backup locations. - Open the backup and confirm that it contains the world directory and the four files named above before proceeding.
Linux backup
- Stop the process through the method you normally use (for example, the foreground console, a service unit or a panel) and verify that it is no longer running.
- From the directory that contains the server files, create a dated archive, for example:
tar -czf ../bedrock-backup-$(date +%F-%H%M).tar.gz . - Alternatively, keep a directly browsable copy with
cp -a /srv/bedrock /srv/bedrock-backup-2026-10-14; substitute your real path. - Check the archive or copied directory for
worlds,server.properties,permissions.jsonandallowlist.json.
Do not delete the backup after a successful launch. Keep it until players have opened the updated world and you are satisfied that inventories, permissions and settings are intact.
How to update Minecraft Bedrock server manually
1. Download the matching official archive
Open the official download page, select the Windows or Linux package that matches your operating system, and note the displayed version. Do not use a random re-upload: the server binary and supporting files must come from a source you trust. If the client update has just arrived but the server archive is not yet listed, wait for the matching server release rather than forcing an unrelated build.

Create a new, empty directory beside the live installation and extract the zip there. This keeps the downloaded files separate from your working world and makes it possible to compare the staging folder with the existing installation. Never extract directly over the live folder before the backup is complete.
3. Stop the live server before replacing files
A running process can keep files open while you copy them, leaving a mixture of old and new binaries. Stop it cleanly, wait for the console to close, and then verify that no bedrock_server process remains. If your host or service manager has a Stop button, use that rather than killing the process abruptly.

4. Copy new files while preserving data and settings
Copy the contents of the staging folder into the live folder, but exclude the existing world and server-specific files. The minimum exclusions are:
worlds/— contains the saved worlds and must not be replaced by an empty directory from the download.server.properties— contains your port, game rules and selected world name.permissions.json— preserves operator permissions.allowlist.json— preserves the player allowlist when you use one.
On Linux, an illustrative rsync command is:
rsync -a --exclude='worlds/' --exclude='server.properties' --exclude='permissions.json' --exclude='allowlist.json' /srv/bedrock-staging/ /srv/bedrock/
Replace both paths with yours. On Windows, an equivalent Robocopy pattern is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
robocopy "C:MinecraftBedrock-staging" "C:MinecraftBedrock" /E /XF server.properties permissions.json allowlist.json /XD worlds
Review the output for copy errors. If you have additional custom files, such as scripts or service definitions, preserve them as well. The downloaded archive can contain defaults that are useful for a new installation but inappropriate for an established one.
5. Check the world-folder name
The world directory name must remain exactly the same after the update. Compare the name in the backup and live worlds directory, and make sure your preserved server.properties still selects that world. Do not rename a world as part of the version change.

6. Restore Linux execute permission if necessary
On Linux, replacing the binary can remove its executable bit if the copy method or filesystem did not preserve permissions. From the live directory, run:
chmod +x bedrock_server
Keep the ownership and permissions used by the account that normally runs the server; do not switch to a different account merely to get the program started.
7. Start and test
Start the executable using your normal launcher. A direct Windows launch uses bedrock_server.exe; a direct Linux launch from the server directory uses ./bedrock_server. Services, scripts and panels may use different commands, so retain your existing startup method. Watch the console for errors, connect with a test account, load the updated world, check a few known builds and inventories, and confirm that operator and allowlist behavior still works.
How to update Minecraft Bedrock dedicated server Linux
The Linux procedure is the manual sequence above with extra attention to ownership, execute permission and the service that starts the process.

chmod +x bedrock_serverif required, and start the service using its established command. - Read the service log and join the server before declaring the update complete.
If the service starts in a different working directory than the one you updated, it may appear to launch successfully while still using the old files. Confirm the executable path and working directory in the service definition or startup script.
Bedrock_server update without losing world
The world is protected by two independent safeguards: a full backup and a selective file copy. The backup lets you roll back; excluding worlds/ prevents the fresh archive from replacing the live data. Preserving server.properties keeps the selected world and your settings, while preserving permissions.json and allowlist.json keeps access control.
Do not copy a world from the staging archive into the live installation, do not rename the existing world folder, and do not start the new executable until the copy is finished. If you maintain several worlds, protect the entire worlds directory rather than only the currently selected folder.
Minecraft Bedrock server update: world not loading
A world that worked before the update can fail to load when the new build expects a different level format or when files were copied incompletely. Treat the original backup as authoritative and avoid repeatedly launching the broken copy while troubleshooting.

Use the backup to isolate the problem
- Stop the server and make a second copy of the failed post-update directory so you can inspect it without losing evidence.
- Restore the pre-update backup to a separate test directory, not over the only backup.
- Run the older server build against that restored copy. If it opens there, the update or a format transition is implicated; if it also fails, the problem predates the update or the backup is incomplete.
- Test the new build against a duplicate of the world, never the only original. If the duplicate loads, move players to that tested copy only after verifying its contents.
When the format changed between builds
Community troubleshooting reports describe level-format mismatches as a common cause of post-update load failures. The practical recovery options are to restore the backup, update through smaller version steps, or wait for a compatible server build. There is no safe file-copy trick that converts a damaged or incompatible world; keep the original untouched while testing each step.
Check the mundane causes first
- Confirm the world-folder name still matches the value selected in
server.properties. - Confirm that the copy did not leave a partial directory or zero-length files.
- On Linux, confirm that the process can read the world and execute the replacement binary.
- Read the server console for the first error, rather than relying only on a client timeout message.
Preview builds and gradual updates
Mojang publishes preview builds alongside stable releases. A preview may change behavior or world compatibility, so run it on a duplicate installation with a copied world and a separate port. Keep the stable installation available for players until the preview has passed your own connection and world checks.
If a direct jump from an old build produces a level-format error, restore the backup and consider moving through intermediate stable builds on test copies. The historical release record illustrates why the exact pairing matters: Bedrock Dedicated Server 1.11.0.23 was released on April 23, 2019 to match Bedrock Edition 1.11.0. That old example is not a current version recommendation; it demonstrates that server and client numbers have historically been tied together.
Updating a Docker Bedrock server
A containerized installation is updated through its image and container configuration, not by unzipping a server archive into the host directory. Community images publish tags such as latest; the image tag determines which server package the container retrieves.
- Stop the container cleanly.
- Back up the host directory or named volume mounted at the container’s Bedrock data path. Verify that it contains
worldsand your JSON and properties files. - Change the image tag deliberately or pull the newer tag specified by your deployment configuration. Avoid changing the data-volume mapping at the same time.
- Recreate or restart the container using your existing Compose file or container manager.
- Inspect the container log, connect to the server and test the world before removing the previous image or container.
Do not assume that a container backup includes persistent data: files stored only inside a disposable container can disappear when it is recreated. The volume mapping is the part that must survive the image change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUpdating a panel-hosted Bedrock server
Game-host panels commonly provide a version-change installer, an update button or a reinstall workflow. These tools usually retain world data, but the retention behavior is a panel setting rather than a guarantee that applies to every host.
- Use the panel’s Stop control and wait for the server to become offline.
- Download the panel’s backup or make a full file backup, including the world and configuration files.
- Choose the version-change or installer action, and read whether it will preserve or replace files.
- Start the server, review the console and test the selected world and permissions.
- If the world is missing or settings have reset, stop the instance and restore the backup before trying another installer option.
Manual, Docker or panel: which update method fits?
| Method | Control | Main risk | Setup effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual Windows/Linux files | Full control over binaries, configuration and copy exclusions | Accidentally overwriting the world or mixing old and new files | Lowest ongoing cost; requires careful file handling |
| Docker | Tagged, reproducible images and declarative configuration | Recreating a container without preserving its persistent volume | Requires container and volume-management knowledge |
| Hosting panel | Installer and version controls abstract most file operations | Panel-specific reinstall behavior or an unexpected reset | Requires a hosting account; simplest interface |
Choose the method that matches the installation you already operate. Converting from a manual server to Docker or a panel during the same maintenance window adds another source of failure and makes rollback harder.
Quick Recap
Post-update verification checklist
- The console reports the intended server build, not the previous one.
- The selected world opens without a level-format or file-read error.
- A player can join, move, interact with blocks and leave normally.
- Known inventories, chests and recent builds are present.
- Operator permissions and the allowlist behave as before.
- Your startup service, firewall and external port still point to the updated installation.
- The pre-update backup remains available until this testing is complete.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Updating while the server is still running.
- Extracting the zip directly into the live directory without a backup.
- Copying the archive’s empty
worldsfolder over the real one. - Replacing
server.properties,permissions.jsonorallowlist.jsonand then assuming the update deleted player data. - Renaming the world folder while changing versions.
- Testing a preview build on the only production world.
- Deleting the backup immediately after the first successful process start.
