To remove a message you sent from the shared Instagram chat, use Unsend on that specific message. Deleting the conversation from your own inbox is different: it does not remove the other participant’s copy. Unsend can remove a message from the chat view, but it cannot undo someone having already seen it.
Unsend a message you sent
- Open the Instagram conversation containing the message.
- Select the specific message you sent and choose Unsend, if that action is available.
- Check the action label before confirming. Exact taps and labels can vary by app version; a current platform-by-platform sequence has not been verified.
Instagram Help Center wording reproduced in a Reddit discussion says: “Once you unsend a message, it will no longer be visible to people included in the chat. Keep in mind that the people you sent it to may have already seen your message.” The post, dated April 20, 2025, attributes the wording to Instagram’s “Unsend a message you’ve sent in a chat on Instagram” help page. Unsend versus deleting a conversation

What Unsend cannot guarantee
- It cannot reverse prior viewing. The reproduced Instagram wording explicitly warns that chat participants may already have seen the message.
- It does not establish whether a recipient gets a notification or sees an indicator. Available secondary accounts conflict, so do not assume either outcome.
- It does not establish deletion from every device, notification, backup, or Instagram system.
- No reliable confirmation here establishes a time limit, bulk unsending, or a way to remotely delete an entire conversation from both accounts. The supported guidance is about unsending a sent message individually.
If you need to remove a whole chat
Deleting a conversation from your inbox and unsending a message are separate actions. The available guidance supports unsending individual sent messages; it does not confirm a whole-chat removal method that erases the conversation from both accounts. Use the current app’s action labels to confirm what a deletion option affects before selecting it.
