If you rooted your phone with Magisk, start with Magisk’s own app and its uninstall option. That is the documented starting point for removing Magisk—not a universal unroot app for every Android phone. If you used another root method, installed a custom ROM, or want to restore the complete manufacturer software, you need instructions and firmware for your exact device.
First decide what “unroot” means for your phone
Removing a root manager and returning a phone to its original manufacturer software are different tasks. Your best route depends on how the phone was rooted and what you want to restore.

- Remove Magisk: use the uninstall function in the Magisk app.
- Restore manufacturer software: follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model and software build; this may require flashing official firmware from a computer.
- Erase personal data: a factory reset does this, but it is not established as a universal way to remove root or restore modified system software.
There is no established universal app that safely unroots every Android model and root method. Identify the phone’s make, model, regional or carrier variant, Android build, root method, and whether it runs stock software or a custom ROM before choosing a procedure.
How to remove Magisk
Magisk describes uninstalling it directly through the Magisk app as the easiest method. Open the Magisk app and use its uninstall function, following the prompts shown for your device. The project’s installation documentation is the reference for this route: Magisk installation and uninstallation documentation.

Do not treat deleting the app icon or uninstalling the visible app as proof that the phone’s modified boot components have been restored. Magisk installation can involve different device images—such as boot, init_boot, or recovery—depending on the device’s layout. If the in-app path does not work, or you need a complete return to manufacturer software, use the device-specific restoration route rather than guessing at a generic removal procedure.
How to restore the manufacturer’s software
For a full stock restoration, obtain official firmware and instructions for the exact make, model, regional or carrier variant, and build. Flashing steps vary by device, and the wrong image or procedure can leave a phone unable to boot. Manufacturer-specific guidance is especially important for devices with their own partition layouts or flashing requirements.

For Google devices, the Android Open Source Project documents fastboot-based flashing and links to factory images. Its guidance describes using a workstation connected to the phone and explains that fastboot can flash an Android system. This is a Google-device reference, not a universal set of instructions for every Android manufacturer: Android Open Source Project: Flash with Fastboot.

Do not copy that command without confirming that it is appropriate for your exact device and restoration instructions. A computer-assisted flashing path requires a data-capable USB cable compatible with your phone and computer. A cable only connects the devices; it does not perform the software restoration.

Back up before a reset or firmware flash
Assume that restoration work may erase your data. AOSP says unlocking the bootloader erases user data, and Google’s factory-reset guidance says a reset removes all phone data and uninstalls apps and their data. Back up anything you need before proceeding. Before a reset, Google also recommends having your Google Account details and screen-lock credentials available and checking the manufacturer’s instructions. Some steps on Google’s help page apply only to Android 14 and later: Google Android Help: Reset your Android device to factory settings.
A factory reset is a data-erasure operation, not a substitute for reinstalling modified boot or system partitions. Google directs users to their device manufacturer for device-specific instructions; do not rely on a reset alone as a universal unroot method.

Understand the bootloader before considering a relock
Root status and bootloader state are related but distinct. An unlocked bootloader can continue booting even when the loaded operating system is not signed by the device’s root of trust. A locked bootloader verifies that software meets the device’s signing requirements. The Android Open Source Project explains this verified-boot distinction in its device-state documentation, last updated September 30, 2026.

Choose a route based on your situation
- You know you used Magisk and only want to remove Magisk: begin with the Magisk app’s uninstall function.
- You used another root tool or do not know how the phone was rooted: identify the root method and check the phone manufacturer’s instructions before changing partitions.
- You run a custom ROM or want a complete stock return: find official firmware and a restoration procedure for the exact model, region or carrier variant, and build.
- You only want to clear personal data: use the manufacturer’s reset guidance, but do not assume the reset restores root-modified software.
- You are unsure whether it is safe to flash or relock: stop before running commands and consult the manufacturer or an authorized repair service.
