You can switch an existing Normal save to Hard Mode during your playthrough. Be careful: returning to Normal requires clearing the game once, while the launch-day update also lets you restart from the beginning on Normal.
How to unlock Hard Mode
Once the October 9, 2026 update is available, a player on a Normal save can switch that save to Hard Mode mid-run. Game director Kento Kinoshita confirmed this option in a September 30, 2026 interview. The interview does not give a menu path or button sequence, so the precise steps may depend on the game interface; it does not support a claim that you must finish the main story before switching.

Hard Mode is available in both the base game and Dark Arisen. The developer has not said that buying the expansion is required to use the mode.
Choose between a fresh run and switching an existing save

What changes in Hard Mode
Kinoshita described the goal as sustaining tension throughout the adventure and encouraging players to use items they may rarely need on Normal. He said the mode responds to feedback that late-game enemies felt too easy. As he put it in the interview’s published English translation: “The core concept of Hard Mode is to let players enjoy a thrilling adventure from beginning to end.”

The interview does not publish exact enemy-stat multipliers or confirm specific changes to damage, experience, currency, drops, or enemy placement. Those details should not be assumed from the mode’s name or from earlier games in the series.
Character level can affect the challenge
The director said a fresh Hard Mode run should maintain its challenge, but warned that a character at an extremely high level may find the base game less demanding. He cited a Level 999 character as an example, not as a published difficulty threshold, and pointed high-level players toward the new expansion area and its dungeons for additional challenge.

What happens if you want to return to Normal?
The reported route back from Hard Mode to Normal is not a simple difficulty toggle: Kinoshita said you must clear the game once to switch back. Producer Naoto Oyama also said the October 9 update adds a restart-from-the-beginning feature. That gives a player who gets stuck in Hard a way to restart on Normal, but it means starting over rather than changing difficulty in place.

Release timing and expansion context
Capcom’s June 10, 2026 release information lists October 9, 2026 for Dark Arisen. The interview separately confirms that Hard Mode can be used in the base game as well as the expansion; expansion ownership is not stated as a condition for accessing Hard Mode.
