Most of the time, it’s a console/account authorization issue (licenses or primary console settings) or a parental control/age restriction.
This guide gives you three definite ways to remove the lock, with exact menu paths and what to do when the first attempt doesn’t fix it. Use the method that matches your situation, then move to the next if needed.

Works for both digital games and many entitlement-related locks. If your game is locked only when a specific account is active, the fix is almost always account authorization or restrictions.

PS5 locks games when the system can’t confirm you have permission to play them on that console and with that account. Common triggers include: setting the wrong account as the primary console, failing to authorize purchases, content restrictions, or downloading a version tied to a different storefront/region.

- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
Typical symptoms include “Locked,” “Purchase to play,” “Not available,” or a blocked app icon even after you’ve installed the content.
Method 1: Set Your PS5 as Primary + Restore Licenses
This is the go-to fix when a purchased or downloaded game shows as locked. It forces PS5 to re-check ownership and renew the license mapping for your account on that console.
Step A — Confirm the correct account is signed in
Before you change primary settings, make sure you’re signed in as the PlayStation Network account that originally purchased the game (or the account that owns the entitlement).
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Go to Settings (top right on the home screen).
- Select Users and Accounts > Sign-In.
- Confirm the user profile displayed is the one that owns the game.
Step B — Set this PS5 as your Primary console
Set the console that you want to play on as Primary for your account. This is especially important if you recently switched consoles or signed into multiple PS5s.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Users and Accounts > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Choose Enable for Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Look for Primary Console status and set it to this PS5 if it isn’t already.
If it says it’s already enabled and primary, move on to restoring licenses.
Step C — Restore licenses (the usual fix for purchase locks)
Restoring licenses forces PSN to re-validate game entitlements. It’s safe and doesn’t delete your installed games, though you may need to re-check downloads afterward.

- Go to Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other > Restore Licenses.
- Confirm and wait for the process to complete.
- Return to the home screen and launch the game again.
What changes after a successful restore
- The lock icon disappears and you can launch the game normally.
- Sometimes the store tile updates from “Purchase to play” to “Play.”
- If the game still shows locked, it usually points to parental controls, the wrong account owning the purchase, or an entitlement mismatch (region/version/disc vs digital).
Method 2: Check Parental Controls and Age Restrictions
If the lock appears only for a child profile (or after you set up family controls), parental controls are the most likely cause. This method applies even if you own the game—restrictions can still block launch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDisable/adjust PS5 console restrictions
- Open Settings.
- Select Family and Parental Controls.
- Go to Parental Controls.
- Check whether restrictions are enabled for the active child user profile.
- Temporarily disable restrictions (or broaden them) and test the locked game again.
If you’re the adult/admin profile, use that user when changing these settings. Some restrictions require the PIN of the account that originally enabled them.
Verify the content restrictions for the specific game/app
PS5 restrictions can be based on age ratings and content categories. Make sure the child profile allows the relevant category.
- In Family and Parental Controls, open Content Restrictions (wording can vary slightly by firmware).
- Confirm the Age Level setting is high enough for the game’s ESRB/PEGI/age rating.
- Verify game/app category filters (for example, games and apps) aren’t blocking everything.
- Save changes, then restart the game attempt.
If you forgot a PIN
Most parental control PINs can’t be guessed. You’ll need the person who set the restrictions to provide it. If you’re using a family-managed setup, the primary adult account usually has the authority to change restrictions.
- If the PIN is tied to a supervised account, you may need to manage it through your family settings.
- If you can’t access the PIN holder, restoration and entitlement methods (Method 1 and 3) won’t help because restrictions will still block launch.
Method 3: Verify Entitlements, Region, and Install Sources
Some locks happen because the console is checking the wrong “ownership path.” This method fixes the common cases: wrong PSN account, wrong version (PS4 vs PS5), region mismatches, or disc/digital confusion.
Confirm you bought/downloaded it from the same PSN account
The PS5 user account matters. If you installed the game using one profile, but the purchase belongs to another, the content can show as locked for the wrong user.

- On the home screen, press Options on the locked game tile.
- Select View Product (or similar).
- Open Ownership/Info and confirm which account owns it.
- Sign in to that owning account and try launching again.
If the locked game tile is only locked on one profile and works on another, you’ve found the culprit.
Make sure you’re downloading the right version (PS4 vs PS5)
Some titles exist as separate entitlements and install targets. A common issue: downloading a PS4 edition while trying to launch the PS5 version (or vice versa).
- Go to Library from the home screen.
- Select Purchased or the specific game entry.
- Check whether it offers PS5 or PS4 download options.
- Install the correct edition for the game version you’re trying to play.
Also check whether the game requires an upgrade (for example, “PS5 Version” download) even if you own the PS4 version.
Recommended Free Tools
Check download queue status and ownership status
A locked tile can be the result of incomplete downloads or failed entitlement checks.
- Open Downloads/Uploads.
- Confirm the game is fully downloaded and not stuck at a partial state.
- If it shows errors, pause the download and restart it.
- After completion, launch from the account that owns the title.
If you bought a disc, check disc vs digital requirements
If you have a physical disc, the game should generally be playable with the disc inserted. If the PS5 is showing a lock anyway, it may be attempting to launch a different edition.
- Insert the game disc fully.
- From the home screen, verify you’re launching the disc-supported app entry.
- If you previously installed a digital version, confirm you’re not trying to launch that locked tile instead.
- For updates, make sure you allow downloads to finish.
If you transferred ownership or upgraded editions, disc and digital licenses can behave differently.

Re-download from PlayStation Store (no shortcuts)
Sometimes the installed files are present, but the entitlement link wasn’t refreshed. Re-downloading can refresh the entitlement mapping.
- Go to PlayStation Store.
- Search for the game by name.
- Select your owned edition and choose Download.
- After download completes, test launch from the owning account.
Troubleshooting When None of the Methods Work
If the game stays locked after all three methods, you’re likely dealing with a PSN sync issue, corrupted local database state, or an account billing/entitlement problem.
Check network status and DNS/MTU oddities
Entitlement validation requires a stable connection. If your network setup is unusual (custom DNS, VPN, restricted NAT), PSN may not validate licenses properly.
- Go to Settings > Network.
- Select Test Internet Connection.
- If it fails or shows errors, fix connectivity first.
- Temporarily disable VPN/proxy (if used) and retry Method 1.
Try signing out and back in
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts.
- Select Sign Out for the affected user.
- Restart the PS5 (not just rest mode).
- Sign back in and run Restore Licenses again.
Power-cycle properly (not just rest mode)
For stubborn authorization issues, a full power cycle helps PS5 rebuild session state.
- Hold the power button until the console turns off.
- Unplug the power cable for 30 seconds.
- Plug back in and power on.
- Retry launching the game.
Safe Mode: Rebuild Database (last-resort for library issues)
Use Safe Mode only when the lock persists and your library behavior seems inconsistent (missing tiles, weird app states). It won’t delete your games, but it can take time.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Press and hold the power button until you hear two beeps (enter Safe Mode).
- Connect a controller via USB.
- Select Rebuild Database.
- Wait for completion, then re-check the locked game.
Common Mistakes That Keep Games Locked
- Wrong account: Setting primary or restoring licenses while signed into a profile that doesn’t own the purchase.
- Overlooking parental controls: Adult can launch, but a child profile remains blocked due to age rating settings.
- Mixing PS4/PS5 versions: Installing one edition but trying to launch the other.
- Relying on partial downloads: Launching before the download finishes or after an error is ignored.
- Expecting a disc to unlock a different edition: Disc ownership doesn’t always map to a separately purchased digital upgrade entry.
FAQs: Unlocking Locked Games on PS5
1) Why does my installed game still show as locked on PS5?
Most often it’s an entitlement validation problem: the PS5 hasn’t confirmed ownership for that user profile on this console. Try Method 1 (primary console + restore licenses) first.

2) Can I unlock games on PS5 without restoring licenses?
Yes, if your lock is caused by parental controls (Method 2) or by using the wrong account/version (Method 3). But for purchase/licensing locks, restore licenses is usually the fastest correction.
3) Will restoring licenses delete my games or save data?
No. Restore Licenses doesn’t remove installed games or your cloud saves. You may need to re-check downloads if something is mid-update or partially installed.
4) What if the lock only happens for one PlayStation user profile?
That almost always points to account entitlement or restrictions for that specific profile. Confirm the purchase owner account and review parental controls for the child user.

5) My game is locked after I changed consoles. What should I do?
Sign into the owning account on the new PS5, set it as Primary (Method 1), then restore licenses. That refreshes the console authorization link.
6) The game works on Wi-Fi but not on my network.
Check your internet setup. Entitlement checks need reliable access to PSN. Remove VPN/proxy settings, run a network test, and retry Restore Licenses.
Bottom Line
If a PS5 game is locked, start with what PS5 uses to authorize play: primary console status and license validation. Method 1 fixes most purchase-related locks quickly.
If the issue follows a child account, use parental controls (Method 2). If the lock is tied to version, region, or the account that owns the purchase, use entitlement/version verification (Method 3). If none work, use the troubleshooting steps—then consider Safe Mode rebuild database only as a last resort.
