Vampire Crawlers has several progression tracks, not one master unlock path. For most characters, complete the listed challenge and then pay coins to recruit them at the Village Tavern. Cards and permanent features unlock through runs, specific challenges, and Relics. Because updates can change card and gem interactions, use the current in-game unlock list as the authority for your build.
How character unlocks work
Most character unlocks have two steps: meet the condition shown for the character, then spend coins at the Village Tavern. Antonio is available by default. Conditions may call for reaching a map, leveling with a particular character, playing a card repeatedly, defeating enemies or a boss, collecting coins, healing, or finding a coffin.

The following examples come from Video Games Chronicle’s character guide published April 27, 2026. Treat them as a useful route map rather than a guarantee that every condition is unchanged in your current build; check the in-game unlock list before farming.

The guide also lists coffin discoveries for several characters: Pugnala in Berserk Wood, Poppea in Milk Factory, Concetta in Gallo Tower, and Giovanna in Library Sanctum. Explore the relevant map and locate the coffin rather than expecting these characters to appear from a card-play or kill-count challenge.
Choosing what to work on first
Early on, ordinary map progress can serve several unlocks at once. Play the tutorial, enter Mad Forest, clear maps, and explore as you go. Repeated-card requirements and special modifier goals are easier to pursue deliberately once you have the relevant cards or systems. This is a practical way to organize the listed conditions, not a tested optimal route.
What to do after completing a character challenge
Return to the Village Tavern and purchase the newly available character with coins. Completing the challenge makes the character recruitable; it does not necessarily add the character to your roster automatically.
A guide table published by Whisper of the House on April 23, 2026 gives examples of the separate costs and Crawler-card effects: Imelda costs 10 coins and her Crawler card adds 15 XP; Pasqualina costs 110 coins and adds 10 Speed; Gennaro costs 700 coins and adds 1 Amount; and Pugnala costs 1,440 coins and increases Might by 20%. Those are guide-reported figures, so confirm the displayed cost and effect in your game before spending.

How cards unlock and fit into progression
There is no single card-unlock rule established for every card. Some character challenges count plays of a particular card, while the official Steam listing describes the broader run loop: experience grants level-ups and new cards; chests provide power-ups and gems that augment cards; and players can pursue weapon evolutions. Cards can be played in ascending mana order to build combos, with Wild cards extending a chain.

For an individual card, follow the wording in the in-game unlock list. A requirement to play a card a set number of times is different from a map-clear condition: use that card during runs and track the stated count rather than assuming that merely finding or owning it completes the challenge.
Relics and upgrades that open new systems
Some progression milestones unlock a feature rather than a character. PC Gamer’s guide, published April 23, 2026, describes these Relic milestones:

The same guide describes Village shop upgrades as coin purchases that permanently improve stats. It reports first-upgrade costs of 500 coins for Recovery and 250 coins for Reroll. It recommends Recovery, Reroll, Duration, Might, and Luck early, but that order is strategy advice, not a requirement or a universally established best choice. Check the shop’s current prices and descriptions before buying.

After Polentir opens the Fortune Teller’s tent, Arcana become available through challenges. PC Gamer gives two examples: Over the Top requires playing Crawler cards 100 times, and Your Shield My Liege requires gaining 2,000 armor over adventures. These are guide-reported thresholds; use the live challenge text if it differs.

Why an unlock may not match an older guide
Steam’s announcements page documents updates that affect card and gem interactions. The guides cited above date from April 2026, and their conditions may not describe every later build. If a listed requirement does not trigger, compare it with the current in-game unlock wording and consult the Steam announcements for changes. The available guides do not establish an exhaustive list of hidden cards or a version number for each condition.
