Apple’s options are to use your previous passcode in a limited recovery window after a recent change, or erase and reset the iPhone. Choose the route that fits your situation—and make sure you can access the Apple Account linked to the device, because erasing it does not remove Activation Lock.
First, check whether your previous passcode still works
If you changed your passcode recently, try Apple’s Passcode Reset before erasing the iPhone. On iOS 17 and later, Apple allows the previous passcode to be used for up to 72 hours after the change. If it is accepted, follow the prompts to set a new passcode. This is the recovery option that may restore access without erasing the device.

Apple describes this feature in “If you forget your new passcode, use your old passcode to unlock your iPhone or iPad within 72 hours.” It applies to a qualifying recent passcode change; it is not a way to recover a passcode you have forgotten for longer.
Choose a reset route if the old passcode is not an option
If the iPhone shows “iPhone Unavailable” or “Security Lockout,” decide between resetting it from the lock screen and using a computer. Both reset routes erase the iPhone’s current data and settings. If you have a backup, you may be able to restore it during setup after the reset.

Reset the iPhone from the lock screen
Apple supports on-device reset on iOS 15.2 or later when the iPhone meets the requirements above. The exact button and prompts vary by iOS release, so follow the wording shown on your screen and Apple’s instructions for your software version.
- On the lock screen, enter passcodes until the iPhone displays “iPhone Unavailable” or “Security Lockout.”
- Tap the on-screen option to erase or reset the iPhone. Depending on the iOS version, it may be labeled “Forgot Passcode?” or use different wording.
- Follow the prompts and enter the Apple Account password linked to the iPhone when asked.
- Wait for the erase to finish, then set up the iPhone and restore from a backup if one is available.
If the reset option does not appear, confirm that the iPhone is running iOS 15.2 or later, that Find My was enabled before the lockout, and that it has an active network connection. If these conditions are not met, use the computer route instead.

Reset the iPhone with a Mac or Windows PC
Use Apple’s computer-based process if the lock-screen reset is unavailable or its requirements are not met. You need internet access and a cable that can charge the iPhone. The connector depends on the iPhone model and computer; Apple’s instructions do not specify one universal cable type. Apple estimates that this process may take up to 60 minutes, but that is not a guaranteed completion time.

- Open Apple’s instructions for resetting an iPhone with a computer and follow the steps for your iPhone and computer.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer with a cable that can charge it, then follow Apple’s instructions to place the phone in recovery mode.
- Use the computer’s restore option when prompted. This erases the iPhone and its current data.
- After the reset, set up the iPhone and restore from a backup if available.
Know what Activation Lock means after an erase
Erasing a locked iPhone does not bypass Activation Lock. If Find My was enabled, Activation Lock may remain in place, and the Apple Account linked to the device is required to reactivate it. Apple states in “Activation Lock for iPhone and iPad” that the Apple Account password is required before anyone can turn off Find My, erase the device, or reactivate and use it.

If you bought a used iPhone that is still linked to its previous owner, ask that person to remove the device from their account. Do not take ownership of a phone that remains linked to someone else’s account; a reset will not make it yours to activate.

Keep the three credentials and protections distinct
- iPhone passcode: The code used to unlock the device. Apple’s previous-passcode recovery applies only within the stated window after a qualifying change.
- Apple Account password: The account credential used for eligible on-device resets and, when Activation Lock applies, to reactivate the iPhone.
- Activation Lock: An ownership protection linked to Find My. Erasing the phone does not remove it.
