You may be able to regain access to a Samsung tablet without erasing it if Samsung offers a previous-lock option for your device or your circumstances match its limited biometric recovery guidance. Otherwise, a factory reset may be necessary—and it erases local data. Samsung says SmartThings Find can no longer remotely unlock a device. Before resetting, check the exact model’s instructions and make sure you can access the Google account previously used on the tablet.
Can you unlock a Samsung tablet without losing data?
Sometimes, but there is no universal password-free unlock. First check for an official recovery route that applies to your tablet. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance describes a previous-screen-lock option in eligible cases; Samsung UK also documents a limited situation in which someone who can still unlock with biometrics may reset lock methods. Availability depends on the device, software and circumstances, so neither option is guaranteed.

Try non-erasing recovery options first
Look for the previous lock option
If you changed your PIN, password or pattern recently, check the tablet’s lock screen for an option to use the previous lock method. Samsung describes this only for eligible cases. If the option is absent, do not assume that an old credential can be used another way; proceed to the next applicable official option.

If biometrics still unlock the tablet
If fingerprint or face recognition still works, Samsung UK’s guidance may apply to resetting lock methods in a particular situation. Follow its instructions for your device rather than assuming biometric access always lets you replace a forgotten PIN. The option can depend on model and software.

If the touchscreen is damaged
A USB mouse and keyboard connected through a suitable adapter can help you operate a tablet whose screen still displays an image but no longer responds to touch. This is an input workaround, not a way to bypass a forgotten screen credential. Samsung describes it for cracked-screen situations in its screen-unlock troubleshooting guidance.
Why SmartThings Find cannot unlock the tablet
Samsung UK says remote unlocking through SmartThings Find is no longer possible. Samsung Find may offer a remote erase option when the tablet is powered, connected to a stable network, linked to a Samsung account and configured for remote controls, but erase deletes data; it is not password recovery. Samsung recommends backing up before erasing, and a device reset this way may still require the Google account previously registered on it. When a factory reset is the remaining option
If no non-erasing route applies, a factory reset may restore use of the tablet, but it removes personal information and data stored on the device. Consider whether you have a backup and whether the local files are worth preserving before you proceed. Samsung also notes that screens and settings can vary by model, software version and carrier.
- Identify the exact tablet model and region. Use Samsung’s tablet support directory to find the device and its manual.
- Open the manual or model-specific Samsung instructions. Follow the reset procedure for that model; do not rely on one button sequence for every Galaxy Tab.
- Confirm account access before starting. Have the Google account previously registered on the tablet available, as well as the Samsung account if the chosen remote-management feature requires it.
- Perform the reset using Samsung’s stated steps. If the device does not match the instructions or a button or screen is damaged, contact Samsung support rather than trying unofficial unlock tools.
- Complete setup with the previously registered Google account if prompted. Google Factory Reset Protection is designed to prevent use after an unauthorized reset. A reset does not necessarily remove this account check.
Samsung’s explanation of reset consequences and account protection is in its factory-reset guidance. If you cannot complete verification, use your own Google account recovery process or contact Samsung tablet support. Do not pay a third party claiming it can defeat account verification.

Choose the route that fits your situation
- Recently changed the screen lock: Check whether the previous-lock option appears.
- Biometrics still work: Check Samsung UK’s limited lock-method reset guidance for your model.
- Only touch input is broken: Consider a USB mouse and keyboard adapter; it does not remove the lock.
- No recovery option applies: Decide whether data loss is acceptable before following the model-specific reset steps.
- You cannot identify the model or complete setup: Use Samsung’s support directory for the manual, troubleshooting, repair and contact options.
Button sequences and feature availability vary, and the tablet’s exact model, software version and region determine which instructions fit. Samsung’s US and UK pages may also describe region-specific availability or wording, so start with the support page for your location.
