If you changed your Galaxy screen lock within the last 72 hours and remember the previous PIN, password, or pattern, you may be able to regain access without erasing the phone. Samsung says the recovery option is for supported Galaxy models running One UI 6.1 or later. If it is unavailable, the documented alternatives are to erase or reset the device, which deletes local data and can still require the Google account previously used on the phone.
Try Samsung’s previous screen-lock recovery first
This is the only route described here that may restore access without wiping local data. It works only when the phone meets Samsung’s conditions: a supported Galaxy model with One UI 6.1 or later, a screen lock changed within the previous 72 hours, and knowledge of the previous credential. Samsung’s India support instructions say the “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern” option appears after at least five failed unlock attempts.

- On the lock screen, make at least five unsuccessful attempts until the recovery option appears. Avoid random guesses; use this only if you remember the previous screen-lock method.
- Tap “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern” and follow the on-screen prompts to enter the previous PIN, password, or pattern.
- Samsung’s India instructions allow up to three incorrect entries of the previous method in this recovery flow. If the prompts differ or the option does not appear, stop and check instructions for your model and region rather than continuing to guess.
The previous method is retained for 72 hours after a lock change, according to Samsung. If that window has passed, or you do not know the old credential, this recovery route will not solve the problem.

If previous-lock recovery is not available, Samsung’s documented paths involve erasing or factory-resetting the phone. Both remove data stored locally on the device. Check whether your photos and other important content are backed up before proceeding; do not assume that data can be recovered after an erase.

- Remote erase through Samsung: Samsung’s SmartThings Find/device-finding guidance requires the device to be associated with a Samsung account and to meet the listed setup and connection conditions for remote actions. The phone must be on and connected to a stable network, and remote controls must have been enabled. If it is offline, an erase may be queued and take effect when it reconnects; execution is not necessarily immediate. - Factory reset: Reset steps differ by model. Use the instructions for your exact device rather than trying a button combination intended for another Galaxy. Samsung’s UK factory-reset guidance describes a reset as removing personal information, changes, and device data.
Be ready for Google account verification after a reset
Erasing the phone does not necessarily remove ownership checks. Google device protection may require the Google account that was previously associated with the device during setup after a reset. Before choosing a destructive option, make sure you can sign in to the relevant Google account as well as the Samsung account needed for Samsung remote actions. Samsung also notes Factory Reset Protection on most Android devices in its factory-reset guidance.
Why biometrics or remote unlock may not get around the forgotten lock
A fingerprint or face unlock, Smart Lock, or Extend Unlock is not a dependable way to bypass a forgotten PIN, password, or pattern. Samsung notes that the configured screen-lock credential remains necessary in relevant lock situations, including after restart or a security timeout. Samsung’s current guidance reviewed here describes remote locating, security actions, and erase—not a universal remote-unlock feature.

When the recovery prompts do not match
Samsung warns that screens and steps can vary by model, software version, and region. Check the support page for your specific Galaxy before resetting it. For device-specific reset help, Samsung directs users to an authorized service center. Its UK guidance on using a previous screen lock is available at Samsung UK’s previous-lock reset page; availability and exact steps may differ by region.
