If you changed your Galaxy’s pattern, PIN, or password recently, first check whether Samsung’s previous-lock recovery is available: on supported devices running One UI 6.1 or later, you may be able to use the old lock without erasing the phone. If that option does not apply, the supported ways to regain use are factory resets, which erase locally stored data and may require the Google account previously used on the device.
Try the previous screen lock first
Samsung’s non-erasing recovery is limited to supported Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 or later. It works only if you changed your screen lock within the past 72 hours, remember the previous pattern, PIN, or password, and did not delete the previous lock when setting the new one. Samsung says the prompt appears after five or more failed attempts.

- On the locked screen, make at least five unsuccessful attempts until Forgot pattern? or the corresponding Forgot PIN/Password prompt appears. Wording can vary by lock type, model, and software.
- Choose the prompt and enter the previous pattern, PIN, or password when asked.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to set and confirm a new screen lock.
Samsung limits entries of the previous lock in this recovery flow to three and says the feature can be used once per lock type after changing the lock. If you are unsure of the old lock, do not spend attempts guessing. See Samsung’s Galaxy lock recovery guidance for the conditions and steps.

Know what a factory reset will and will not do
If previous-lock recovery is unavailable, a reset can remove the screen lock by returning the phone to setup, but it erases data stored on the device. Samsung warns that data erased through SmartThings Find cannot be recovered; Google likewise says remote erase permanently deletes data. Photos, messages, and other files may be recoverable only if they were backed up or synced elsewhere. A reset is not a way to retrieve data that was never backed up.

After reset, Android Factory Reset Protection may require the Google account previously registered on the phone. Confirm that you can sign in to that account before erasing. Samsung’s support guidance describes FRP on Android 5.1 and later; the exact verification flow can depend on the device and setup. If you cannot complete account verification, contact Samsung or an authorized service center rather than trying a bypass.

Erase remotely with SmartThings Find
Samsung’s India guidance describes this route for an owner’s registered device. Sign in to SmartThings Find with the Samsung account associated with the phone, select the device, and choose Erase data. The device’s data will be permanently deleted. If the phone is offline, Samsung says the erase takes effect when it next comes online.

Remote management depends on the phone’s prior setup and connectivity. Samsung’s US lost-device guidance says the device must be on, connected to a stable network, associated with a Samsung account, and have remote controls enabled. Service availability and labels may vary by region and configuration. Consult Samsung’s erase instructions and its device-location guidance before proceeding.
Reset with the Galaxy’s buttons
Samsung supports a factory reset through device buttons and recovery mode, but there is no single button combination that should be assumed to work on every Galaxy. The procedure varies by model and software. Find the instructions for the exact model and region on Samsung’s factory-reset support page, then follow the warnings for Wipe data/factory reset. This erases the device and does not remove ownership protections.

Erase through Google Find Hub
Google’s remote erase option is available only when its prerequisites are met: the phone has power and a network connection, is signed in to a Google account, has Find Hub enabled, and is visible on Google Play. The erase permanently deletes data, and the Google account password may be needed to use the phone afterward. Google directs users to the device manufacturer for button-based reset steps. Read Google’s current Android unlock guidance before choosing this route.
Do not follow legacy Android pattern-reset steps on a modern phone
Google’s account-based Forgot pattern recovery applies to Android 4.4 or lower. It is not a general method for current Galaxy devices. For newer Android versions, Google’s guidance is to erase the phone and set it up again if you cannot recover the lock through an available device-specific option.

Pause if you cannot verify the accounts
Before any erase, make sure you can access the Google account previously used on the Galaxy; SmartThings Find also requires the relevant Samsung account. If you are uncertain about credentials, the model-specific reset procedure, or what is backed up, stop before erasing and contact Samsung support or an authorized service center. Samsung advises service-center help when Google account verification after reset cannot be completed. Avoid third-party tools or paid services claiming to bypass the lock: the official procedures documented here do not establish that such claims are safe or effective.
