The safe process is model-specific: identify the complete model number, confirm that exact variant is listed by LineageOS, then follow that device page’s Samsung Download Mode instructions. On supported phones, you enable Developer Options and OEM unlocking, enter Download Mode, choose the on-screen device-unlock action, accept the data wipe, and continue with the recovery and LineageOS steps for that model.
Do not use the generic fastboot flashing unlock procedure written for other Android phones. Samsung’s documented LineageOS workflow uses Download Mode, and the hardware-key sequence, wording of the unlock prompt and post-unlock checks differ by device.

What you must verify before touching the bootloader
A marketed name such as “Galaxy S22+” is not enough to establish compatibility. Samsung sells phones with different regional model numbers, processors, radio configurations, carrier restrictions and firmware branches. LineageOS support is also device-specific. A page for one model is not evidence that every phone in the same retail family can be unlocked or can run LineageOS.

- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone (on some One UI versions this is under About device).
- Record the full value shown as Model number, including every letter and regional suffix. Also note the software/firmware information shown on that screen.
- Write down the country or region where the phone was sold and whether it is a carrier edition, because those details can affect OEM-unlock availability.
Use the model number, not only the consumer name, when searching the official LineageOS device list. If the exact identifier is absent, stop and do not assume that a similarly named device is interchangeable.

Confirm the current LineageOS device page
Open the installation page linked from the device list and read it from top to bottom before changing settings. That page is the controlling document for supported firmware, required preparation, recovery installation and the unlock sequence. Device pages can change as maintainers update instructions, so an old forum post or a guide for another Samsung model is not a substitute.
The cited Galaxy S22+ (g0s) installation page demonstrates the current style of Samsung instructions: enable OEM unlocking, enter Download Mode, and select an on-screen choice labelled “Device unlock mode” and/or “Unlock Bootloader.” The Galaxy A21s page uses the same broad concepts but has its own sequence and a later check that OEM Unlock is still enabled. Those examples show why you must follow the page for your exact model.
Understand the consequences and prepare a recovery plan
Unlocking erases the phone
Bootloader unlocking triggers a factory reset. Treat the phone as if every local file will be deleted, including photographs, downloads, authenticator data, messages and app data. LineageOS installation guidance warns that manufacturer backup systems, including Samsung’s, may not be accessible after you switch to LineageOS; its general installation documentation gives the same warning about relying on a stock backup solution after changing operating systems (LineageOS installation guidance).
- Copy photos, videos and documents to a computer or another storage location.
- Export contacts if they are not synchronized to an account you control.
- Save two-factor-authentication recovery codes and move authenticator accounts according to each service’s procedure.
- Record passwords or ensure your password manager can be restored without data stored only on this phone.
- Check that important application data has an independent backup; a Samsung-only restore path may not work once LineageOS is installed.
Keep the original stock firmware information and the exact model number with your backup. If you need to return to the manufacturer software later, those details help you find the correct instructions rather than flashing an incompatible package.

Charge and connect the phone safely
Use a charged battery and a reliable, data-capable USB cable that matches the phone’s connector. A charge-only cable cannot carry the Download Mode interaction. The S22+ instructions specifically recommend trying another cable and another USB port if the computer does not communicate with the phone as expected. You do not need a special hardware flasher or a particular cable brand.
Enable Developer Options and OEM unlocking
Do this only after confirming that the model page tells you to. Labels vary slightly by One UI release, but the usual path is:
- Open Settings > About phone > Software information.
- Tap Build number seven times. Authenticate when prompted.
- Return to the main Settings screen and open Developer options (sometimes under Settings > Developer options or Settings > System > Developer options).
- Find OEM unlocking or OEM unlock. Read the warning, then enable it if the switch is available.
- Leave USB debugging and every other developer setting at the values required by your model’s LineageOS page. Do not enable options merely because a generic Android tutorial lists them.
On a supported device, the OEM-unlock control is the phone’s indication that the bootloader can be unlocked through the documented process. Its absence is not something to bypass with a random command or paid service.
When OEM unlocking is missing
First verify the model, country, carrier edition and installed firmware. Some phones intentionally restrict bootloader unlocking, and availability can change with updates. A July 29, 2025 report discussed One UI 8 potentially hiding the OEM Unlocking toggle on some Samsung configurations; that report does not establish a universal removal across all models or regions. Read the details in the Android Central report, then check your exact device page and firmware rather than assuming the report applies to your phone.

If the LineageOS page does not document an unlock route for your exact variant, do not continue by flashing files intended for another model. Contacting the carrier or manufacturer may clarify a restriction, but there is no general command that turns a permanently locked variant into an unlockable one.
Enter Samsung Download Mode and unlock the bootloader
Samsung’s relevant mode for this operation is Download Mode, not the fastboot mode used by many other Android manufacturers. The button combination is model-specific, so copy it exactly from your LineageOS installation page. Do not infer the sequence from the S22+ page when working on an A21s, or vice versa.
The model-specific sequence
- Power the phone off completely, unless the device page specifies a different starting state.
- Connect the phone to the computer, or use the connection timing specified by the device page.
- Hold the exact hardware keys listed for your model until the Samsung Download Mode screen appears. Keep the phone connected as instructed; changing the timing can boot normally instead.
- Read the warning screen. The page may tell you to press a particular key to enter a device-unlock submenu.
- Select the on-screen action labelled Device unlock mode, Unlock Bootloader, or the exact equivalent shown for your model. The S22+ instructions explicitly use those labels.
- Confirm the warning that the phone will be reset. Let the device complete the erase and reboot; do not disconnect it during the confirmation or restart.
On some models the first boot after the unlock takes longer than a normal restart. That delay is expected while the reset completes. If the screen returns to Download Mode instead of continuing, stop and reread the model page before selecting anything else.
Why generic fastboot commands are unsafe here
A command such as fastboot flashing unlock belongs to workflows designed for devices that expose fastboot bootloader commands. The Samsung instructions cited above do not use that command; they use Download Mode and a physical on-screen unlock choice. Sending fastboot commands to a Samsung phone that is not in a compatible fastboot implementation will not substitute for the Samsung procedure and can leave you troubleshooting the wrong problem.

Complete the first boot and verify the unlock
After the reset, Android starts at the initial setup screen. Complete only the setup needed to reach Settings and the next step on your LineageOS page. Do not restore a large backup yet; the stock system will be replaced during installation.
Repeat the post-unlock checks required by your model
Some device pages require you to enable Developer Options again because the factory reset removed that setting. The A21s instructions specifically tell you to re-enable Developer Options and verify that OEM Unlock remains enabled after unlocking. If your page lists that check, perform it exactly. Do not assume that a switch’s appearance or wording on another Samsung model proves the same state on yours.
Record any bootloader warning shown at startup and follow the device page’s next instruction. A warning screen by itself does not tell you which recovery image, firmware build or partition procedure is correct; those details remain model-specific.

Proceed to the LineageOS installation
Unlocking is preparation, not the operating-system installation itself. Once the device page confirms that the bootloader is unlocked, continue in its prescribed order through recovery installation, required firmware checks and LineageOS package installation. Use only files named for the exact model and variant.

Root is not automatically required
The cited S22+ method says rooting the stock firmware is not necessary for its preferred recovery installation route. Do not root simply because an unrelated tutorial lists root as a prerequisite. If your own device page explicitly requires a different procedure, that page takes precedence; otherwise, adding root steps introduces extra changes without helping the documented installation path.
Do not skip firmware requirements
LineageOS pages can require a particular stock firmware level before recovery or the operating system is installed. Firmware requirements are not interchangeable between Samsung models. Check the page immediately before flashing, because a requirement may have changed since you last read a guide.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
The phone boots normally instead of entering Download Mode
- Power it off again and repeat the exact key timing from the model page.
- Keep the USB connection in the state specified by that page; some Samsung procedures depend on whether the cable is connected before the keys are held.
- Remove a case that may prevent a button from being fully pressed.
- Do not substitute a key combination from a different Galaxy model.
The computer does not detect Download Mode
- Try a known-good data cable that fits the connector; avoid cables used only for charging.
- Move to another USB port, following the S22+ page’s troubleshooting advice.
- Reconnect only when the device page permits it, then re-enter Download Mode.
- Check the computer-side requirements listed on the current LineageOS page instead of installing random driver packages from an unrelated guide.
The OEM unlocking switch is absent or disabled
- Confirm the full model number, sales region, carrier status and firmware version.
- Install only updates that your device page permits before attempting the unlock; do not assume an update will restore the switch.
- Check whether the current One UI version has changed the setting’s availability on your specific configuration, using the dated One UI 8 report only as context, not as proof of a universal rule.
- If the exact LineageOS page does not describe an unlockable path, stop rather than attempting a paid bypass or another model’s files.
The phone resets but OEM Unlock is not shown afterward
Follow the device page’s post-reset instructions. On the A21s example, Developer Options must be enabled again and OEM Unlock must be checked. A missing switch after reset can also indicate that you are following instructions for the wrong variant, so verify the identifier before repeating any operation.
You are asked to unlock with a fastboot command
Pause and verify the source. Samsung’s cited LineageOS instructions use Download Mode and an on-screen unlock selection. A generic fastboot tutorial is not a replacement. Return to the official page for your model and use only its commands and screens.
A practical decision checklist
Proceed only when every applicable item is true:
- The full model number and regional/carrier variant are recorded.
- The exact variant appears in the current LineageOS device list.
- You have read that model’s pre-installation, firmware and bootloader sections.
- Your important data is stored somewhere independent of Samsung’s stock restore system.
- The phone has sufficient charge and you have a working, data-capable cable.
- Developer Options and OEM unlocking are enabled exactly as the device page instructs.
- You know the model-specific Download Mode key sequence and the wording of the unlock prompt.
- You understand that confirmation performs a factory reset.
- You have not substituted generic fastboot instructions, another model’s files or an unverified bypass.
Bottom line
The reliable way to unlock a Samsung bootloader for LineageOS is conditional, not universal: identify the exact phone and variant, confirm official LineageOS support, back up everything, enable OEM unlocking, use that model’s Download Mode sequence, and accept the on-screen bootloader-unlock reset. The Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy A21s pages illustrate the shared pattern but also the critical differences. If OEM unlocking is unavailable or the device page does not provide a supported route, treat the phone as not currently eligible instead of forcing a generic command.
