Yes. Google documents a Googlebook bootloader-unlock process for developers and advanced users who want to install a custom operating system or test an app. It requires enabling OEM unlocking in Settings and then using the recovery screen. The process erases all data and disables device security, so proceed only if you understand those consequences.
Before you unlock the bootloader
Google says most users do not need to unlock their device. Consider it only if you have a specific development goal, such as installing a custom operating-system version or testing an app. Protect any data you need before starting; Google’s instructions warn that unlocking erases the device but do not prescribe a particular backup method.

Google also warns that unsupported modifications can cause hardware, software, or security problems and may affect the warranty. This is a warning about possible consequences, not a claim that every device will be damaged or lose warranty coverage. Read Google’s current Googlebook bootloader instructions and follow the prompts shown on your device.

How to unlock a Googlebook bootloader
- Reveal Developer options. In Settings, open About device. Under Device identifiers, select Build number seven times.
- Enable OEM unlocking. Go to System > Advanced > Developer options, then turn on OEM unlocking.
- Disconnect attached devices. Remove peripherals such as a mouse or external hard drive before entering recovery.
- Open the recovery screen. Hold Esc + F2, quickly press and release Power, then release the other keys when the screen lights and prompts appear. The English Google Help instructions consulted describe this key sequence; follow your device’s actual prompts if they differ.
- Choose the unlock option. On the recovery screen, select Advanced options > Unlock bootloader and follow the on-screen instructions.
What the instructions do—and do not—establish
Google’s general help article documents this workflow, but it does not provide a model-eligibility list or explain whether managed devices or particular regional configurations are restricted. Do not assume every Googlebook can be unlocked; check the current instructions and the options available on your own device.

Bootloader unlocking is distinct from Chromebook Developer Mode and Chromebook’s built-in Linux development environment. Google documents Chromebook debugging as a separate workflow involving features such as USB boot and SSH access (Chromebook debugging features). Its Linux instructions describe a Debian development environment (Set up Linux on your Chromebook). Neither procedure is a substitute for the Googlebook bootloader steps.
Does unlocking mean you can root the device?
No. Unlocking the bootloader is not, by itself, proof that a working or Google-supported root method is available. A 9to5Google report dated October 5, 2026 described Magisk support as in development, but that dated report is not an official Google promise or a current rooting guide. Google’s bootloader instructions do not mention Magisk.
