What Uninstalling SteamVR Actually Does
When you uninstall SteamVR, Steam typically removes the main Steam app plus shared runtime pieces. However, Windows may keep driver remnants, configuration folders, or registry entries that affect launch behavior and tracking devices.
If you’re troubleshooting performance issues, switching headsets, or freeing disk space, you’ll usually want both a Steam uninstall and a post-check cleanup.

Prerequisites (Before You Start)
- Confirm where Steam is installed: default is
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam, but many users install to a different drive. - Know your headset: SteamVR can interact with Oculus/Meta Link, Windows Mixed Reality, and OpenXR runtimes.
- Close SteamVR-related processes: exit Steam, then stop any running VR sessions.
- Have admin access: removing drivers or system-level components may require it.
Practical shortcut: reboot your PC first. It reduces “file in use” errors during uninstall.
Method 1: Uninstall SteamVR From Steam (Cleanest Option)
This is the fastest, most correct approach when SteamVR was installed normally through Steam.
Step-by-step (Steam Desktop Client)
- Open the Steam desktop app.
- Click Library.
- Use the search box and type SteamVR.
- Right-click SteamVR and select Manage → Uninstall.
- Confirm the uninstall prompt.
After uninstall completes, restart Steam and check that SteamVR no longer appears in your Library.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step-by-step (Steam Web interface)
You can also start uninstall from a browser if you prefer. The exact UI can vary, but the flow generally matches the desktop client.
- Go to the Steam website and sign in.
- Open Library and find SteamVR.
- Select Uninstall and confirm.
If the uninstall doesn’t reflect on the PC, use Method 1 (desktop) or proceed to manual cleanup.
Method 2: Remove SteamVR Components Manually (For Stubborn Installs)
If SteamVR won’t uninstall completely, you’ll typically find leftover folders under Steam’s common locations and user profile settings. Manual removal is especially useful after partial uninstall attempts.

1) Remove SteamVR folders (Steam library)
Locate your Steam install directory and then remove SteamVR’s remaining files. You might have multiple Steam library folders (for example, D:\SteamLibrary).

Delete the SteamVR folders you find. If Windows blocks deletion, continue to the driver/runtime method below and retry after reboot.
2) Clear SteamVR user configuration
SteamVR stores settings per user. Clearing these can fix tracking or launch issues after uninstall/reinstall.
- Press Win + R.
- Paste:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\openvr
- Delete the openvr folder contents (or move it to a backup folder if you want a rollback option).
- Repeat for:
%APPDATA%\OpenVR
If you don’t see these folders, that’s normal—skip them.
3) Remove leftover SteamVR logs and runtime files
SteamVR commonly writes logs under your user profile. Deleting them can help keep future troubleshooting clean.

- Check:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\openvr\logs
- Delete the logs folder if it exists.
Method 3: Uninstall SteamVR Runtime and Related Drivers
Depending on your headset and your prior driver installs, SteamVR may have installed OpenVR/SteamVR runtime components and device drivers. These are the parts most likely to survive a Steam app uninstall.

Use this method only if you’re seeing symptoms after uninstall, such as VR devices still appearing, SteamVR auto-launch loops, or OpenVR runtime calls continuing.
Check “SteamVR” in Windows apps (if present)
- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for SteamVR.
- If you find an entry outside Steam (rare), uninstall it.
Usually, SteamVR shows only inside Steam, but it’s worth checking.
Remove OpenVR/SteamVR runtime registration via SteamVR settings (if it still launches)
If SteamVR still launches despite uninstall attempts, it may have registered itself as a runtime. You can sometimes revoke runtime behavior using SteamVR’s internal settings (when accessible).
- Try to launch SteamVR once.
- Open SteamVR Settings.
- Find runtime or developer options related to OpenVR runtime registration (wording varies by version).
- Disable runtime auto-launch if that option exists.
If you can’t launch SteamVR, skip to the runtime conflict section and verification steps.
Device driver cleanup (Device Manager)
If your controllers or headset show as lingering devices, Windows may have installed driver entries tied to SteamVR.
- Press Win + X → Device Manager.
- Expand categories like:
- Universal Serial Bus controllers
- Human Interface Devices
- Mixed reality devices (if present)
- Sound, video and game controllers
- Look for entries referencing SteamVR, OpenVR, or your headset brand.
- Right-click suspicious/SteamVR-linked entries → Uninstall device.
- If prompted, choose Delete the driver software for this device when it’s safe to do so.
- Restart your PC.
Method 4: Fix SteamVR That Reinstalls or Fails to Uninstall
Uninstall failures usually come down to Steam downloads stuck in a “verify” loop, files in use, or runtime driver installers that keep running.

1) Clear Steam download cache (when Steam is stuck)
- Open Steam → Settings → Downloads.
- Click Clear Download Cache.
- Confirm and log back into Steam.
- Try uninstall again.
2) Stop background Steam processes
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End tasks such as steam.exe, vrserver.exe, and anything named similarly to SteamVR.
- Reattempt the uninstall from Steam.
3) Uninstall as admin
Sometimes the Steam library folder sits under restrictive permissions (especially on external drives). Running Steam elevated can fix permissions issues.

- Right-click the Steam shortcut.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Then uninstall SteamVR from Library → Manage → Uninstall.
4) Verify you removed the correct SteamVR package
Steam may list multiple VR-related entries. Make sure you uninstall SteamVR (often appid 250820), not only a related tool or beta entry.
If you enabled betas, you might see “SteamVR Beta.” Remove that entry too.
Prevent Recurring VR Conflicts (OpenXR / Oculus / Windows Mixed Reality)
Uninstalling SteamVR shouldn’t break your whole VR stack, but conflicts can happen if another runtime expects OpenXR behavior.
Two common scenarios:
- OpenXR runtime still points to SteamVR. You uninstall SteamVR, but your system keeps trying to use it.
- Headset runtime is installed alongside SteamVR. For example, Oculus/Meta runtime or WMR may still be configured to route through SteamVR first.
Check OpenXR runtime (Windows)
On Windows, OpenXR runtime selection is typically handled by runtime settings in vendor software, and some systems use runtime registration paths.
Practical steps that work across setups:
- If you use Oculus/Meta: open Meta Quest Link settings and ensure OpenXR is set to the Oculus runtime.
- If you use WMR: open Windows Mixed Reality settings and ensure its runtime is active.
- For SteamVR-origin workflows: re-run the OpenXR runtime selection tool after changing runtimes (if your headset software provides one).
Because the exact UI depends on your installed runtimes and driver packages, use your headset vendor’s OpenXR selection control, not random registry edits.

Disable SteamVR auto-start in Steam (if applicable)
Even after uninstall, you may see Steam attempting to start VR-related processes if you have configured launch options or shortcuts.
- Open Steam → Settings.
- Check for any VR-related launch options for games you still use.
- Remove VR launch parameters that reference SteamVR/OpenVR if you see any.
Verification Checklist (Confirm SteamVR Is Gone)
After uninstall + cleanup, verify at three levels: Steam app state, filesystem state, and runtime behavior.
Check 1: Steam Library
- SteamVR should not appear in Library as installed.
- If it still appears, uninstall again and recheck Method 2.
Check 2: Common folders
steamapps\common\SteamVR(and any “SteamVR Beta” folder) should not exist.%LOCALAPPDATA%\openvrshould be empty (or deleted if you removed it).- Logs under
%LOCALAPPDATA%\openvr\logsshould be gone.
Check 3: Runtime behavior
- Launch a non-VR game that previously complained about OpenVR. It should no longer reference SteamVR runtime.
- If a VR app still expects SteamVR, you may need to switch its OpenXR/OpenVR runtime setting instead of forcing SteamVR to be installed.
Common Mistakes and Gotchas
- Deleting the wrong Steam library folder: always confirm your Steam Library Locations in Steam Settings.
- Skipping user config cleanup: leaving
openvrsettings can keep problems alive after reinstall. - Assuming “uninstall” removes drivers: Windows device entries can linger after Steam app removal.
- Forgetting beta variants: “SteamVR Beta” can remain installed separately from the stable package.
- Confusing OpenVR and OpenXR: uninstalling SteamVR solves many OpenVR issues, but OpenXR runtime selection must still point to a valid runtime.
SteamVR Uninstall Troubleshooting Table
| Symptom | Likely Cause | What to Try |
|---|---|---|
| SteamVR uninstall fails or hangs | Files are locked by running VR processes | Close Steam + stop vrserver.exe and restart PC, then uninstall again from Library |
| Uninstall completes but SteamVR still runs | Shortcut/app auto-start or another runtime redirects to OpenVR | Check game launch options and headset vendor runtime settings; remove SteamVR references |
| Disk space doesn’t change | Leftover folders in Steam library or user config | Use Method 2 to delete SteamVR folders and %LOCALAPPDATA%\openvr |
| Devices still appear in Device Manager | Windows driver remnants remain | Use Device Manager → Uninstall device for SteamVR-linked entries, then reboot |
| VR apps complain about OpenVR missing | App expects SteamVR runtime | Switch the app to OpenXR or install the required runtime for that app |
Frequently Asked Questions
Will uninstalling SteamVR break non-VR games?
Usually no. SteamVR is only used by VR-capable software and certain runtime hooks. If a non-VR app still tries to load VR runtimes, it’s typically because of a misconfigured plugin or launch option.
Do I need to uninstall SteamVR if I’m switching to Meta Quest Link or another headset?
Not always. If your new headset software can use OpenXR/OpenVR without SteamVR, you can uninstall. If a specific app requires SteamVR, you may need SteamVR installed even if you don’t plan to use it directly.
Where are SteamVR files after uninstall?
Most leftovers are either in your Steam library folder under steamapps\common (if uninstall was partial) or in user settings under %LOCALAPPDATA%\openvr. Method 2 covers both.
Can I reinstall SteamVR after uninstalling?
Yes. Reinstalling is straightforward from Steam. If you had tracking/config issues, reinstall after clearing %LOCALAPPDATA%\openvr so the new setup doesn’t inherit old settings.
Is there a difference between OpenVR and OpenXR in this context?
Yes. SteamVR historically centers on OpenVR, while many modern apps use OpenXR. Uninstalling SteamVR removes OpenVR runtime behavior, but OpenXR runtime selection still depends on what vendor runtime you have installed.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBottom Line
For most users, the correct 2024 uninstall is: remove SteamVR from Steam, then confirm by deleting leftover SteamVR folders and clearing %LOCALAPPDATA%\openvr. If devices or runtime behavior still linger, finish with Device Manager cleanup and runtime conflict checks.
If uninstall keeps failing, focus on locked processes, Steam cache issues, and uninstalling the correct stable vs beta SteamVR package. Once those are handled, SteamVR removal should be complete and predictable.
