How to uninstall or disable unwanted Windows 11 apps safely

Use Windows 11’s supported uninstall paths first, and disable startup when you only want an app to stop opening at sign-in. This guide covers Settings, Start, Control Panel, Task Manager, repair and reset, failed removals, built-in apps, and suspected malware.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a normal Windows 11 app, start with Start > All apps, right-click the app, and choose Uninstall. You can also use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s More button, and choose Uninstall. If Settings does not offer removal, try Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

If you only want to stop an app opening when you sign in, do not remove it: turn it off under Settings > Apps > Startup or disable it in Task Manager > Startup apps. These controls leave the program installed. Some Windows components cannot be uninstalled, and the labels or available options can vary by app and Windows update.

Choose between uninstalling and disabling

The safest first step is to identify the result you actually want. Uninstalling runs the app’s supported removal process and removes the program from Windows. Disabling startup leaves the app installed but prevents it from launching automatically when you sign in. A disabled app can still be opened manually and can still receive updates or use disk space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uninstall when the app is no longer needed

Use uninstall when you are sure you do not rely on the program for a device, printer, work task, accessibility feature, game, or another application. Windows does not provide a complete dependency list, so check the app’s purpose before removing it. If you are uncertain, disabling startup is reversible and lower risk.

Disable startup when automatic launch is the problem

Choose startup controls when the app is useful occasionally but opens every time you sign in. This is particularly appropriate for launchers, meeting tools, update helpers, and other programs you want available on demand. Disabling a startup entry does not uninstall the app or delete its data.

Check the app name and publisher

Before selecting a removal or startup action, verify the displayed name and publisher. Windows may list a desktop program under a different name from its Start-menu shortcut. Do not remove an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar; investigate what it belongs to first.

Uninstall a regular app from the Start menu

The Start menu is the quickest supported route for many Windows 11 applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Select All apps.
  3. Find the application in the list.
  4. Right-click its name and choose Uninstall.
  5. Confirm the prompt and complete any uninstaller screens that appear.

The final screens belong to the application’s own uninstaller, so read each option. Some uninstallers offer to keep settings or user data; others ask you to close the program first. If Windows reports that the app is open, close its visible windows and try again. If it continues running in the background, restart Windows and repeat the process rather than deleting program folders manually.

Uninstall through Windows 11 Settings

Settings provides a searchable list and is the normal route when the Start-menu command is missing.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  3. Use the search box or scroll to the app.
  4. Select the app’s More button, usually shown as three dots.
  5. Choose Uninstall and follow the on-screen instructions.

If the button is unavailable, the app may be a protected Windows component, a package that does not support this removal path, or a program managed by another installer. Do not force removal by deleting its installation folder. First use the Control Panel route below or the program’s own uninstaller.

What to do if the app is listed more than once

Some programs install a main application plus a separate updater, runtime, or support component. Remove only the entries you recognize as belonging to the unwanted app. A shared runtime may be required by other programs, and Windows does not identify every dependency in the Installed apps screen.

Use Control Panel when Settings cannot remove it

Traditional desktop programs may not expose an uninstall command in Settings. Microsoft documents Control Panel as the fallback for these cases.

  1. Open Start and search for Control Panel.
  2. Open Control Panel and select Programs.
  3. Choose Programs and Features.
  4. Select the program you want to remove.
  5. Choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change, then follow the program’s wizard.

Not every Windows 11 app appears in Programs and Features. Microsoft Store applications and some packaged components may be managed only through Settings. If the program is absent from both lists, look for an uninstaller in the program’s Start-menu folder or consult the software publisher’s documented removal instructions. Do not download an unverified “cleaner” simply because an entry is difficult to remove.

Stop an app launching at sign-in without uninstalling it

Turn off startup in Settings

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Startup.
  3. Find the application.
  4. Switch its toggle to Off.

The app remains installed and can be started from Start or a file association. Turn the toggle back on if you later decide you want automatic launch.

Disable a startup entry in Task Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Task Manager, or press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps in the left navigation.
  3. Click the app you want to control.
  4. Choose Disable.

Task Manager shows a startup-impact indicator for entries when Windows has enough data to classify them. Use that information as a prompt to investigate, not as proof that an entry is unnecessary. A high-impact entry may be important to your workflow, while an unfamiliar low-impact entry still deserves identification before you change it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the Startup folders if the app is not listed

Some applications start from a shortcut rather than a standard startup-app entry. Microsoft identifies two folders to check:

  • The current-user Startup folder, which affects only your account.
  • The all-users Startup folder, which affects accounts on the PC.

Open the appropriate folder, identify a shortcut you recognize, and remove only that shortcut to stop automatic launch. Removing a shortcut does not uninstall the application. Keep a copy of the shortcut or note its original location if you may want to restore startup later.

Why registry editing is not a first step

Startup entries can also be stored in Windows registry locations. Microsoft warns that registry changes can have unintended consequences. For a general cleanup, use Settings, Task Manager, or the Startup folders instead. Registry work is appropriate only when you understand the specific entry, have a current backup, and are prepared to recover from an incorrect change.

Repair or reset an app that you still need

Uninstalling is not the only response to a broken application. Windows 11 may offer repair and reset controls for some apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the app and select its More button.
  3. Choose Advanced options if it is available.
  4. Select Repair first.
  5. If the problem remains, use Reset when offered.

Repair attempts to correct the installation without changing app data in the same way a reset can. Reset can remove the app’s local settings or sign-in state, so read the warning before confirming. These controls are not available for every app, and desktop programs may provide their own repair option instead.

Troubleshoot an uninstall that fails

Restart and retry the supported route

A pending update, locked file, or background process can block removal. Save your work, restart Windows, and retry the Start or Settings procedure. If the app launches at sign-in, disable its startup entry first, restart, and then attempt the uninstall.

Use repair or reset where available

If the app is damaged rather than unwanted, use Advanced options > Repair, followed by Reset if necessary and available. A repaired installation may then expose its normal uninstall command.

Distinguish Store apps from desktop programs

Windows Store apps and traditional desktop programs use different installation systems. A Store app may require Store-app troubleshooting, while a desktop program may rely on its own uninstaller or the Programs and Features panel. If Windows directs you to a separate troubleshooting page, follow that path rather than mixing removal methods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Follow Windows troubleshooting prompts

When Windows displays a troubleshooter or repair prompt, read the proposed action and confirm that it targets the correct application. Keep the app’s name, version, and any error message if you need to contact the publisher. Avoid downloading a random removal utility to bypass a message you do not understand.

Leave Reset this PC as a last resort

A full Windows reset affects the whole computer, not just one unwanted app. Microsoft presents it only after simpler troubleshooting steps fail. Before considering it, back up personal files, verify you have installation and sign-in information for required software, and understand whether you will keep or remove personal files. An ordinary uninstall problem rarely justifies an immediate system reset.

When Windows will not let you remove an app

Some applications are built into Windows or are otherwise protected. Microsoft states that some built-in apps cannot be uninstalled and that some apps are not currently removable from Settings. Availability can differ between Windows 11 editions, updates, device configurations, and app types.

Use the controls Windows provides for the specific entry. If there is no Uninstall command, do not treat that absence as an invitation to delete system folders, alter permissions, or run untested scripts. If the app is optional but cannot be removed, disabling its startup behavior and turning off unnecessary in-app background features may reduce unwanted activity while preserving system stability.

Why an app may not appear where you expect

Start, Installed apps, and Programs and Features do not present every app in the same way. The Start menu may show a shortcut while Installed apps shows the product’s formal name; some Store apps are managed differently from traditional desktop programs, and built-in components may not offer ordinary removal. Check the other supported route before concluding that an app is missing or broken. If none offers an uninstall action, Windows may not support removing that particular item through those interfaces.

That limitation is a reason to stop and identify the entry, not a reason to force the issue. A supported startup toggle can still address automatic launch without changing the installation. If the program is managed by an organization, follow the organization’s instructions rather than trying to bypass its management controls.

Handle suspected malware as a security incident

An unfamiliar app is not automatically malware, and an uninstall attempt is not a malware-removal procedure. If you suspect malicious software because of pop-ups, browser redirects, unexpected accounts, security alerts, or other unusual behavior, use Windows Security or another reputable security tool to scan and clean the device.

Complete the security scan and follow its remediation instructions before treating the item as an ordinary unwanted app. If the security tool identifies a threat, do not rely on deleting a shortcut or uninstalling a similarly named program; malware can recreate files or use more than one component.

What uninstalling or disabling can—and cannot—do

Uninstalling follows the app’s supported removal process; it is not a promise that every trace of the app, such as personal files or settings, will be deleted. Read the app’s uninstall prompts, especially if they ask whether to retain data. Startup disablement is narrower: it prevents automatic launch at sign-in but leaves the program available on the PC. It does not necessarily stop the app from running when you open it yourself or from being updated.

There is no universal storage or speed figure to expect from either action. The benefit depends on the specific app and how you use the PC. Task Manager’s startup-impact label can help you decide what to investigate, but it is not a guarantee of a particular startup-time improvement. Use Windows’ built-in controls for this task; the documented steps do not require paid cleanup software or a third-party startup manager.

Which Windows 11 method should you use?

Situation First choice Result Limit to remember
The app is unwanted and shows an uninstall command Start > All apps > right-click > Uninstall, or Settings > Apps > Installed apps Runs the app’s supported removal process Some built-in apps cannot be removed
Settings has no Uninstall option Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features Opens the traditional desktop-program uninstaller Not all packaged or Store apps appear there
The app is useful but opens at sign-in Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps Prevents automatic launch while keeping the app installed Some entries use Startup-folder shortcuts instead
The app is malfunctioning and should remain installed Installed apps > More > Advanced options > Repair, then Reset if offered Attempts to fix the installation Options vary by app and Reset may remove local settings
The app may be malicious Windows Security or another security tool Scans for and addresses threats Routine uninstall steps are not malware remediation

A safe cleanup checklist

  • Decide whether you need removal or only want to stop automatic launch.
  • Confirm the exact app name and publisher before changing anything.
  • Check that the app is not required for a device, work task, accessibility feature, or another program.
  • Use Start or Settings first for a normal uninstall.
  • Use Control Panel for a desktop program that Settings cannot remove.
  • For startup behavior, use Settings, Task Manager, or a recognized Startup-folder shortcut.
  • Try Repair before Reset when you need to keep a malfunctioning app.
  • Restart Windows before retrying a failed uninstall.
  • Do not make registry edits unless you understand the entry and have a recovery plan.
  • Use Windows Security for suspected malware instead of treating it as routine app cleanup.
  • Do not delete program folders or run unverified cleanup utilities to force removal.

What can change between Windows 11 updates?

The procedures above reflect Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance available on October 13, 2026. Microsoft also documents some of the same pages for Windows 10. Settings labels, menu placement, and available controls can change with Windows updates, and the options shown depend on whether an app is a Store package, a desktop program, or a built-in Windows component.

If a label differs slightly on your PC, look for the same function under Apps, Installed apps, Startup, or Advanced options. Use the control that Windows exposes for that particular app instead of assuming every application supports the same removal method.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I uninstall an app in Windows 11?

Open Start > All apps, right-click the app, and choose Uninstall. Or go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s More button, and choose Uninstall. Follow any prompts.

How do I stop an app from opening at startup without uninstalling it?

Go to Settings > Apps > Startup and switch the app off, or open Task Manager > Startup apps, select the entry, and choose Disable. The app remains installed and can still be opened manually.

Why can’t I uninstall an app from Settings?

Some apps cannot currently be uninstalled from Settings, and some built-in Windows apps cannot be removed. For a traditional desktop program, try Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. If there is still no supported uninstall option, do not delete system folders or use an untested script.

What should I do if an uninstall fails?

Restart Windows and retry the supported uninstall route. If the app is malfunctioning and you want to keep it, try Repair in Advanced options if available, then Reset if needed; Reset can remove local settings or sign-in state. Follow Windows troubleshooting prompts and use the app-specific Store or desktop-program help when directed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use a cleanup app or registry edit to remove unwanted programs?

The documented Windows removal and startup controls are the safer first choices. Registry changes can have unintended consequences, and an unverified cleanup utility is not a reliable workaround for an app that Windows does not let you remove.

What should I do if I think an app is malware?

Use Windows Security or another security tool to scan and clean the device, then follow its remediation instructions. Uninstalling an app or deleting its startup shortcut is not a substitute for a malware scan.

The Bottom Line

Use Start or Settings to uninstall an app you no longer need, and try Control Panel for a traditional desktop program that Settings cannot remove. If you only want to stop automatic launch, disable startup instead. When Windows offers no uninstall option, avoid forcing removal; use the supported controls, and handle suspected malware with a security scan.
