If a network adapter refuses to uninstall in Windows 11, first identify the correct entry and save its matching driver, then uninstall it in Device Manager and restart. Check hidden entries and error codes if the adapter is stale-looking or missing from the normal list. Use Network reset only after those narrower steps: it affects all installed adapters and their settings, not just the one you are trying to remove.
Before removing the adapter, identify it and save its driver
Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and note the name of the Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter you intend to remove. Record any error code shown in its properties; the code may help identify which troubleshooting guidance applies.

Before uninstalling, download the matching driver from your PC manufacturer’s official support site. If the PC is offline, Microsoft recommends downloading the driver on another computer and transferring it on a USB flash drive. Avoid third-party driver download sites. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance includes the uninstall-and-restart process and the driver fallback.

- In Device Manager, expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the specific adapter and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows presents it, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Restart the PC.
After the restart, Windows should look for and install the adapter driver. If it does not, run the manufacturer driver package you saved before uninstalling. Having that fallback ready matters because automatic reinstallation is not guaranteed.

Check hidden adapters and error codes
If the entry is not visible in the ordinary Device Manager list, or appears to be a leftover device, select View > Show hidden devices. Inspect the entry and its status before deciding what to do. Showing a hidden device makes it visible for inspection; it does not by itself establish that the entry should be removed.
Use the error code, if one is present, to find the guidance that matches that specific state. Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code guidance explains how to show hidden devices and includes removal instructions for particular conditions, such as Code 49. That specific cleanup procedure is not a general fix for every network adapter that persists.

Choose the right troubleshooting approach
| Approach | When it fits | Scope and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall in Device Manager and restart | First attempt to remove or reinstall a selected adapter | Affects the selected adapter. Keep the manufacturer driver ready in case Windows does not reinstall it. |
| Show hidden devices and inspect status | The entry is hidden, looks stale, or has an error code | Reveals non-present entries for inspection. Visibility alone does not show that removal is appropriate. |
| Network reset | Last resort after narrower troubleshooting | Removes installed adapters and their settings, then reinstalls adapters with default settings after restart. Network software and profiles may need attention. |
Use Network reset only as a last resort
Microsoft describes Network reset as a last step because it removes installed network adapters and their settings. Windows reinstalls adapters with default settings after the PC restarts. Before using it, account for possible VPN-client or Hyper-V virtual-switch setup and review your network profiles afterward; known network connections may change to a public profile.

What to do based on what happens next
- The adapter returns and works: Confirm that the PC can connect before making further changes.
- Windows does not reinstall it: Install the manufacturer driver package you saved earlier.
- The adapter is not listed at all: This differs from a visible entry that will not uninstall. Microsoft says that when a wireless adapter is not listed in Device Manager, Windows does not detect it; use guidance for that symptom rather than treating it as a stubborn-entry problem.
- An error code appears: Follow guidance for that specific code instead of assuming all persistent entries have the same cause.
