If notifications stopped after you changed Android settings, work through the controls in this order: the affected app’s notification permission and categories, Do Not Disturb or another Mode, alert and lock-screen behavior, then background-data restrictions. This sequence separates notifications that are blocked from notifications that arrived silently or were hidden. Menu names vary by phone maker and Android version.
First identify what “stopped” means
Before changing anything else, compare the symptom with the descriptions below. The distinction points to the setting most likely responsible and avoids resetting unrelated preferences.

| What you observe | Most useful first check |
|---|---|
| Only one app is affected | That app’s notification permission and individual notification categories |
| Several or all apps are affected | Do Not Disturb, another Mode, or a device-wide notification setting |
| There is no sound or vibration, but an icon or entry appears | Alerting versus silent behavior, volume, and the app’s category settings |
| Notifications appear in the shade but not on the lock screen | Lock-screen notification display settings |
| Alerts arrive only after opening the app | Background data and Data Saver controls |
| Alerts fail at predictable hours | A scheduled Do Not Disturb rule or another automatic Mode |
| Alerts are missing only after you dismiss or snooze them | Notification history, if the phone provides it |
Send yourself a test message or trigger a low-risk alert after each change. Testing one control at a time tells you which setting actually restored delivery.

1. Re-enable the app and its notification categories
Android has two separate layers of control: an app-level notification permission and, on many phones, categories or channels within that app. Turning on the top-level permission does not necessarily turn on every category. A messaging app, for example, can have separate categories for direct messages, group messages, calls, and other activity.

Check the app-level permission
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Choose App notifications (the label may be App notifications, See all, or similar).
- Select the app that is not notifying you.
- Turn on the app’s main notification switch.
If the app is not listed, open its App info page from Settings or by pressing and holding its icon, then look for Notifications. Some manufacturer interfaces place the same switch under Settings → Apps → [app] → Notifications.
Inspect every relevant category
On the app’s notification page, look for a list of notification types, channels, or categories. Open the category connected to the missing alert and enable it. A category can be disabled even while the app’s main permission says notifications are allowed.
Also inspect the category’s behavior. If it is set to Silent, Android may place the alert in the notification shade without playing a sound or vibrating. Change it to Alerting when you need an audible or haptic alert, then verify the chosen sound and vibration options. A category’s settings are independent, so changing one does not automatically change the others.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRetest before moving on
Trigger a new notification while the app is closed. If it appears, the permission or category was the cause. If nothing arrives, leave these controls enabled and continue with the device-wide checks below; do not repeatedly toggle the same switch, because that can obscure which setting changed.

2. Turn off Do Not Disturb and check other Modes
Do Not Disturb (DND) can suppress sound, vibration, pop-up alerts, or visual interruptions even when app permissions are correct. Current Android instructions generally put these controls at Settings → Modes → Do Not Disturb. Older releases may call the area Do Not Disturb preferences, and some phones place it directly under Settings → Sound or Settings → Notifications.
Check the current state
- Swipe down to open Quick Settings.
- Look for Do Not Disturb or a Modes tile. If it is highlighted, tap it to turn it off, or open its settings for more detail.
- For the full configuration, open Settings → Modes → Do Not Disturb (or the equivalent path on your phone).
- Review the notification filters. A filter may allow calls or selected people while excluding app notifications.
Do not assume DND is off simply because the tile is not currently highlighted. A schedule can reactivate it later, which explains notifications that work for part of the day and then stop again.
Remove schedules and automatic triggers
Inside DND, inspect schedules, duration rules, and automatic triggers. Disable or adjust any rule that starts at the time your alerts disappear. Then check other Modes, such as Bedtime or Driving, because they can apply their own notification filters and may turn on automatically. If a mode is controlled by a routine or calendar condition, remove that condition or change its hours.
After saving the change, wait for a fresh alert rather than relying on an old notification. DND changes affect future delivery; they do not recreate an alert that was already dismissed.

3. Determine whether alerts are silent or hidden
An alert can arrive successfully while looking “missing.” Android distinguishes alerting notifications from silent notifications, and lock-screen privacy settings can hide content or the entire notification there.
Use the notification shade as the reference point
Swipe down after triggering a test alert. If the notification is present in the shade, delivery is working. Open the notification’s options—often by pressing and holding it or swiping slightly and tapping a settings icon—to see which category produced it. Set that category to Alerting if you need sound, vibration, or a heads-up banner. Confirm that the phone’s notification volume is audible and that vibration is enabled if you rely on it.
If the alert is present but grouped, collapsed, or minimized, expand the group and check the app’s category rather than enabling every notification indiscriminately. This preserves useful filtering while restoring the specific alert you need.
Review lock-screen display
- Open Settings and go to Notifications.
- Open Notifications on lock screen or the closest equivalent.
- Choose the option that allows notifications to be shown, such as showing all notifications or showing alerts without sensitive content.
- Return to the affected app’s notification settings and verify that its category is permitted on the lock screen, if your phone provides a per-app option.
Manufacturers use different labels, including Lock screen notifications, Notifications on lock screen, and Show content. A privacy setting that hides sensitive content may still show an icon; that is different from blocking the notification altogether.
Check Notification history when available
Some Android phones include Notification history under Settings → Notifications. Open it to look for recent alerts, dismissed notifications, and snoozed items. History can confirm that an alert arrived even if you swiped it away, but it is not available on every device and may need to be enabled before future events occur. It cannot recover notifications from before the history feature was turned on.

4. Restore background data for apps that fail when closed
If notifications arrive only after you open an app, the app may be unable to use data in the background. Google Play Help explains that background data can let apps provide notifications while they are not in use. Android version and manufacturer software determine the exact controls.
Check Data Saver
- Open Settings.
- Search for Data Saver, or open the network and internet section and select it.
- If Data Saver is on, either turn it off temporarily to test notifications or add the affected app to the list of apps allowed to use unrestricted background data.
The labels may be Unrestricted data, Allow background data usage, or Data Saver exception. Enable the exception only for apps whose timely alerts matter, because unrestricted background access can increase data use.
Check the app’s mobile-data setting
Open the app’s information page—often Settings → Apps → [app] → Mobile data & Wi‑Fi—and look for Background data or a similar switch. Turn it on if it is off. If your phone separates Wi‑Fi and mobile data permissions, allow the connection types you use when the app is closed.
Do not treat one battery setting as a universal notification fix. Android manufacturers expose different battery-management controls, and the official guidance does not establish a single battery-optimization path that applies to every phone. If the failure persists after background-data checks, use the device maker’s documentation for your exact model rather than disabling unrelated power protections at random.

5. Retest systematically and undo only the change that matters
Once permissions, Modes, display behavior, and background data have been checked, run a controlled test:
- Close the affected app without force-stopping it.
- Leave the phone idle for a few minutes with the same network connection you normally use.
- Trigger one new notification from another device or service.
- Check the notification shade, sound or vibration, and lock screen separately.
- Repeat the test with the app open if the first test fails; the difference indicates a background-delivery problem.
If one app still fails while others work, revisit that app’s categories and its own in-app notification preferences. Many apps have a second notification switch, account-level mute, conversation mute, or quiet-hours feature inside the app. Those controls are separate from Android’s permission page.
If every app fails despite DND and other Modes being off, check whether the phone is in Airplane mode, has a network outage, or has a work profile that applies its own policy. These conditions are outside the notification permission itself and require the relevant network or administrator setting to be restored.
When menu names do not match
Android is an operating system family rather than one identical interface. A Pixel phone, a Samsung phone, and another manufacturer’s model can expose the same control at different levels, and Android releases can rename a menu. Use the Settings search field for terms such as notifications, Do Not Disturb, Modes, notification history, Data Saver, and background data.
Google Android Help gives the general warning: “Settings can vary by phone. For more info, contact your device manufacturer.” Use the manufacturer’s support documentation when a control is missing, when a mode cannot be disabled, or when a scheduled rule keeps returning. Include the phone model, Android version, affected app, and the time pattern in your support request; those details help identify a device-specific path.
Common mistakes that make the problem harder to diagnose
- Checking only the master permission: an enabled app can still have a disabled category.
- Assuming no sound means no delivery: silent alerts can be visible in the shade.
- Turning off DND once and stopping there: a schedule or Bedtime/Driving mode can reactivate filtering.
- Changing several settings simultaneously: you lose the ability to identify the cause and may weaken privacy or battery controls unnecessarily.
- Expecting Notification history to be a backup: it is optional, device-dependent, and generally records only after it is enabled.
- Disabling random battery protections: there is no single manufacturer-neutral battery setting proven to fix every notification failure.
- Using an old notification as proof: always test with a newly generated alert after each change.
A compact recovery checklist
- App permission: Settings → Notifications → App notifications → [app] is on.
- Category: the specific message, call, or event category is enabled and set to Alerting when sound or vibration is required.
- DND: the Quick Settings tile is off, filters allow the app, and no schedule is restarting it.
- Other Modes: Bedtime, Driving, and automatic routines are not suppressing alerts.
- Lock screen: notifications are allowed to appear, with the desired privacy level.
- History: Notification history is checked when the phone supports it.
- Background delivery: Data Saver and the app’s background-data permission allow the app to connect while closed.
- Test: a new alert is generated with the app closed and then with it open.
What to do if notifications still do not return
Record whether the failure affects one app or all apps, whether alerts appear silently, whether the lock screen is the only missing location, and whether the problem follows a schedule. That symptom record is more useful than simply reporting “notifications not working.” Check the app’s own notification and account settings, update the app and system when updates are offered, and then contact the phone manufacturer if the Android paths above are unavailable or behave differently. Avoid a factory reset unless the manufacturer’s support process recommends it and you have a verified backup; the settings checks above are the safer first response to an accidental change.
